How many of you deal with eczema? |
|
It is a daily battle for my family. My youngest child has eczema and it has been diagnosed as severe. We struggle with it each and every day and she is 3 1/2 now. She was first diagnosed with it at one month old. How do you deal with it? Is it all medications or do you have special remedies that work for you? No case is the same so what works for some may not work for others, but I figured I would post and see what you all do that helps!

1. enternet (32) | 2 years ago | ok, let me try this again. I'm new to this site and lost my first answer. You are so right, people react differently to products. People tend to forget that. I use Renew lotion by Melaleuca. It cleared up mine so that I didn't need a prescription anymore. I only had a mild case though. My coworker uses it for her son, who has it all over, and she said it worked great for him. She hated making him put on his prescription because of the smell. You have to be a member to buy their products, but if you want to try it, I don't mind making an order for you. That way you can see if it works for her without having to sign-up. If it doesn't work, you can return it for a refund, even if you used it all. Also, are you using chemical free laundry detergent and softner? We can only use certain brands because of the itch factor. It's better to get rid of as many iritants as possible.

webbmommy (613) | 2 years ago | We are using dye free and scent free laundry detergent. Since we switched to that it has helped a little. Mainly she has been better since she turned 3. However, it still flares up. Thanks for the tip on Melaleuca. I have heard about them before. What we are doing now seems to be working great for our situation, but it is nice to know what other options are out there if we ever need to make a change. Thanks for the response!

| 7mfmns (44) | 2 years ago | Hi, sorry to come in late to this discussion. My son who is almost 6 months old has eczema to his face and legs. I also use All free & clear liquid detergent for his clothes and for his skin I use either vaseline or eucerin cream. For the itching I use hydrocortisone 1% sparingly once or twice I day. These help but it's a constant battle and I know I'm not going to see the last of it anytime soon. His skin will get clear for 2-3 days then will flare up again. Anyway, this is the first time i heard of Renew lotion, is it safe for a 6-month old? How effective is it? TIA!

| psyntium (2) | 2 years ago | I myself have the same problems since I was 13. And I've been using some Hydrocortisone cream that I bought from eckerd. It helps for a while, but then it came back. ARRRGGHHH. Is there a solution into it?

webbmommy (613) | 2 years ago | There is no cure for eczema. It is a tough battle. Our doctors have told us not to use anti-itch creams because it can irritate the rash more. Maybe you should try and oral medication like benadryl instead? That may help more.

| HSMomma (23) | 2 years ago | Hi! I have a 6 year old son that was diagnosed with severe eczema at the age of 2 months. It started on his scalp, and as he grew older it spread to his entire body with the exception of his diaper area. We took him to Duke University to see a pediatric dermatologist and an allergy specialist, among several other specialists. They will all tell you something different because really in truly, its all about trial and error. It really is frustrating. What finally worked for us was an ointment called Cutivate and an oral Zantac (yes, Zantac!) Apparently, Zantac can work for allergies as well. What would mainly cause his flare ups was allergic reactions. On his very first birthday, he tested positive for allergies towards eggs, peanuts, cats, dogs, dust mites etc etc etc. Once we got him on that combination of ointment and oral with an occasional prednisone thrown in for severe flare ups, he started clearing up...but that wasn't until he was about 3. Up until the age of 3, we tried everything that you could think of. We had to coat him with vasoline at night and wrap him loosely in saran wrap under footie pajamas, with socks on his hands and feet and keep him the bed with us. My husband would hold one hand, and I would hold the other. There were times when he would actually bite himself to scratch. He had constant sores all over his body. His fingers would crack and bleed, toes, knees, behind his ears.....it was heartbreaking. We didn't even allow him in daycare until after he was 18 months due to the increased risk of staff infection. Anyways, there is always hope that kids will grow out of it. Now, he rarely ever has an episode. His biggest problem now is the ictyosis vulgaris he was diagnosed with 2 years ago:/. Good luck!

3. jmcafam (2275) | 2 years ago | My daughter has this condition and she calls it her itchy disease. She had is at first when she was a baby all over her little face and it was really bad. For the first year it just would not really go away for very long. Now she is six and mainly has it on her arms. We have tried various products to help control it and have found that a prescription works best when it flares up, Protopic. To help her out though we just use lotions and soap for dry skin that are hypoallergenic. We have also used hydrocortisone when she starts to feel the itchies come on.

| 4. SaadMahfooz (6) | 2 years ago | Hydrocortizone cream is the only remedy. However, if you have access to homeopathic medication, then go for it. It takes longer to be cured by homeopathic medication but it is permanent. I have this disease for 3 years. I used to use Provate G Cream. The cream used to suppress the itch and wound but after some days it reappeared. Since I switched to homeopathic, I feel much better and itching is controllable too. One more thing, through medication if you try to control eczema, chest congestion would be aggrevated and vice versa.

webbmommy (613) | 2 years ago | Actually Hydrocortizone is not the only rememdy. We have been told to stay away from that type of cream because it can make the itching worse and also irritate the rash more than it already is.

webbmommy (613) | 2 years ago | We wish we had hard wood floors, but we do not yet. We do know that our daughter is allergic to dust so we know that is an issue to some extent. However we do not feel that is causing her eczema. She is not allergic to cats, we had her tested for that as well. Why would we not use beef? What is the issue with that?

| 6. enternet (32) | 1 year ago | Sorry I forgot to check back in. I usually have things set so that if a discussion I'm involved in is active, I get an email. Regarding RENEW - It's fine to use for a 6 month old (9 months now.) It sounds like a lot of you deal with this constantly and have to use a number of creams. I'd really like to suggest you give Renew a try. It has helped a lot of people. They tested it against Eucerin last year and it had much better results The worst that could happen is the condition gets worse for a day and the best is it could relieve your child's itching and maybe even take you down to just one lotion. I really hope you'll give it chance. If any of you would like to try Renew, let me know. I can order several bottles and ship them to whoever. If you have Paypal, you can just paypal me for it. If it works for you, we can set it up so you can order your own. If it doesn't you can use it as regular lotion. Since i forget to check this often, email me at Tab_Lynn@yahoo.com and put Renew in the title so I don't mistake it for spam. Tabitha
