Would like to know if or why the tail of poodles are cropped?

I have two miniature poodles. Neither of them have cropped tails. This is fortunate as they like to wag their tails to show when they are very happy or excited. Secret my oldest one was born in August 2004 and Magic my youngest one was born in January 2006. Many older poodles have cropped tails. I think the tail was cropped shortly after birth. This practice seems to be going out of favour with the Kennel Club. Some people think that it is cruel. In the UK we call it tail docking.

I dont know the resoning behind croping the tail. If your going to have it done its best to have it done right after birth. I personaly dont see anything wrong with having a tail.

Poodle tails are docked (cropping refers to ears) a day or two after birth. The reason behind docking tails is for working purposes. . though most dogs are not used for their original purposes they continue to be cropped and docked for cosmetic purposes. Poodles were originally water retrievers and docked tails reduced damage to the tail while out in the field.

If your dog has not already been docked, it is probably too late to do it. Tails are docked while the dogs are still babies, before the nervous system has time to fully develop so the dog feels no pain. Tail docking any later in life is major surgery and can be traumatic for the dog.
