When moving far away, how do you meet people? email this discussion to a friend?

My friend just moved halfway across the country with her boyfriend, and he's the only one she knows there. She has no friends in the area. I've suggested finding a church, taking a class at a local college or community center, and going to the library. What else can she do to meet people and make friends?

Three years ago we lived in my hometown. We decided it best for our family to move to my husbands hometown only 4 hours away. Even though I already knew people hear, it really didn't matter that much. They are already busy with their lives and don't have much time for me. The people I already knew here, I rarely talk to, or I talk to them as much as when we used to visit only a few times per year.

Only in the last 8 months or so have I made new friends (that I didn't know before). One is from the church we attend, the other I met because our kids go to preschool together and we are both stay at home moms of younger kids.

Your friend just needs to keep getting out of the house and meeting people. Volunteer at different things that interest her. I also attend MOPS. It's a great place to meet other moms. Friendships take time to develop unfortuneately, but don't give up. It's taken my 2 1/2 years to find some quality friends here, and it's been worth the wait. I continue to find new things to go to just so I can meet new people. You never know when you're going to hit it off with someone.

Volunteering is a great idea. I wish I had thought of it. Thanks for the suggestion!
