In Defense of American Idol.. |
| |
| I am excited about American Idol’s upcoming show this week, for many star performances are to benefit those in need. Some of the performers are Annie Lenox, No Doubt, and there is even a surprise appearance by Celine Dion! My friends and I are anticipating what will happen, for we each have our individual favorites. I know I do! It is great that American Idol is doing something to give back to the community, and I know I will be watching tonight and tomorrow! In defense of American Idol and recent publicity, perhaps audiences should think twice before being critical of singers and the show. One reason is because it is often easier to comment when you are not in the hot seat yourself. Could you get up there and sing? I know I am not ready for that. And even though Sanjaya was voted one of the worst singers this season by more than the American public, neither the viewers nor the audiences are doing the singing in front of the cameras and complete strangers. In addition, just because a vote isn’t going your way, doesn’t give anyone the right to critique without considering all the facts, the least of all a fan’s musical biases. And the fact is that American Idol is about something bigger than you and me. American Idol is about helping people regain a sense of themselves, especially through improving someone’s quality of life directly. The show clearly allows us the chance to give something back to the community. Now whether that generosity is through singing or donating money to programs that will help people gain their lives back and to consequently live a better life, the point is something is being done. That’s more than I can say about most people worried about their cell phone bills. So instead of sitting on your comfortable couch critiquing American Idol or Sanjaya, maybe consider that all those involved in the show are giving something back of their own free will. A true American Idol gives without expecting anything in return. When putting one’s sense of self on the line via taking a chance and risking personal safety or assumptions, stepping out of the comfortable zone is priceless. The non-material reward is enough in itself. In short, the satisfaction of trying is a reward. Secondly, most people do not have the guts to get up in front of a crowd to speak, much less reveal their hearts and souls by singing to strangers who will judge them on more than their singing. Perhaps tonight before we watch American Idol, take a moment to consider giving back at least more than a critical vote. | | | | | |

| | I am excited for the contestants, for it must be a lot of pressure on them to perform tonight, knowing the cause is bigger than themselves. Yet I could be wrong, too, for some of the singers seem to shine even more so when the pressure is on. I think Jordan is going to rock the house so to speak. I say this because during country music week, she did more than sing, she told a story with her emotions, her expressions, and her voice. She didn't need to shout or become a wall flower during her performance. And the girl is only 17! Wow! | | | |

| | Very well put. I am an American Idol fan myself, and I really do think that this show benefits a lot of people, and I am so exited about the new focus on helping less fortunate people. | | | | | | |

| | I am also excited, for it sends a positive message out. Perhaps stereotypes of music and stardom via rock and roll is about to change! It's about time to send a better message out to the youngsters and the oldies as well. | | | |

| | I personally think it's fantastic they are using their fan base and corporate America to help both the causes. Africa and the Gulf do need help, and this is a perfect way to get younger generations to see a little bit more of the world. | | | | | | |

| | Perhaps they do. It was awesome last night to see all the companies that were donating to the cause. I cried like an idiot last night! | | | |

| | Considering how much everyone has made off of this show (producers, stars, record company, network), it seems only right that they do something charitable. I think that it's great that they are getting some really big name stars involved (Annie Lennox, Bono) and not just have it be the contestants (as good as they might be). It's amazing some of the music talent who are now willing to appear on the show; those ratings really help improve the show I think. Tonight's performances by the final six were some of the best so far this season. | | | | | | |

| | I couldn't agree with you more. I think American Idol is a very nice platform for up and coming singers to showcase their talents and get noticed. It is also a great vehicle for artists to share their talents to the world. And with the Idol Gives Back benefit concert/show in place, AI has not only inspired people to believe in their dreams but now AI is also making their dreams a reality. And this is truly a start to changing the world for the better. | | | | | | |

| | It would seem getting noticed in the "business" equals a prerequisite to getting world issues noticed (and then solved). It's like kiling two bird with one stone? In any case, I hope to watch it tonight. | | | |
