Can you be a fan if you don't like a song?

I was having this discussion with a friend yesterday about music and she mentions a band, and I told her what a big fan I am, but that I really hate this one song they released because it was too commercial and got too much airplay. She says you can't be a fan unless you like everything they release. I really disagree. What do you all think?

Its not necessary that if you are someone's fan you should like each and every song of that particular artist or group. All people do some good and some bad work in their life, like we post very good discussions and sometimes no response discussions.

It's obvious from your post that you are young, but also obvious is that your friend is much less mature. Liking a band should be based completely on their music. There is a whole world os musicians and bands out there for your choosing, and you're free to like whatever you like the sound of. When I was a teenager, I was into hardcore techno music, but heard some Beethoven and Mozart and loved it. My friends laughed and made fun of my strange tastes, but I ask you. Who lost out from that? My friends laughed for a few minutes because I said I liked something that wasn't cool, but I got to (and still get to) enjoy some beautiful music that carries emotions and feelings and moods better than most modern music. In a nutshell, I'm saying enjoy songs for what they are, not for who made them. I guarantee you'll benefit for the rest of your life.

I'm only 4 years younger than you. :) And no offense, but I think you might have lost the point of the post. I'd asked if people wouldn't consider someone a fan if they disliked a song the band in question released. :)

No one is perfect, no band is perfect, no musician or singer is perfect either. I can think of a few musicians, bangs, droups, singers whom I really like, who have a song or two that I really can't stand. If you like them IN GENERAL, you can still be a fan. It is possible not to like a particular song, and still remain a fan of the artist.

I think most true fans are those who can admit to liking and disliking some of their favourites musicians/singers/bands work. Obviously some people will just say that they like everything an artist does, but in reality most artists experiment at some stage, quite often with every new release and some of that experimentation doesn't appeal to some of the older fans. Artists realise that not all fans will like everything they do. It's a fact of life, and in my opinion doesn't make anyone less of a fan because they don't like a song.
