8 year old girl birthday party  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 97/100. webbmommy (611) 5 years ago

OK, my daughter turns 8 in just over a month. she wants to have a sleepover, which I thought would be fun as long as we kept it small. However, my husband is not up for this at all. Every time I bring it up he starts groaning and talking about all of the negative things that come with a slumber party. What do you think? Is 8 to young to have a small sleep over for a party like 3 or 4 friends? Should we try it and just make sure we have a long talk with our daughter before hand about the ground rules? Should we wait until she is older?

I think 8 is a good age for a first sleepover. I remember being around that age when my parents let me start having friends sleepover for birthdays. I would definitely talk with your daughter before hand about what you expect and all the ground rules, etc. If your husband is the type who doesn't want to be around with all the girly games and the noise, tell him he can go have a guy's night and come back when it's over. lol Just make sure you are prepared for anything because you never know with kids! Good luck!

He is concerned about the noise and also the additional kids in the house. We have 3 kids. The oldest will be 8 in May, then a 5 year old, and then a 3 year old too. I think he is concerned about having so many in the house at once.

I don't see anything wrong with this and think it is a nice idea . I did this with my children and it was always nice and they have good memories of it today now that they are older . I would definitely suggest ground rules though as you never know what they may end up doing .
I told my daughter one year that she could invite her friends over for a sleepover if she wanted . Big mistake lol , she invited her whole class and then some from other classes . The next thing we knew there were over 30 children ( think it was 30 some , it was years ago so don't remember the exact number anymore ) that ended up showing up and were all spending the night . Believe me it was a night to remember . I have a scrapbook page of it done up that I named biggest slumber party of the year with the date on it . They all had so much fun but it was definitely a long night for us parents :) We ended up having to go shopping so there would be enough for them all to eat and had to borrow blow up beds for all the children to have a place to sleep , it was definitley and eventful night for them . All in all it wasn't as bad as my husband and I thought it was going to be and it was a memory none of the chidldren will ever forget but it showed us that ground rules had to be set so nothing like this were to ever happen again lol .
Have fun with it , you child is only young for such a short period of time and what is one night a year to make this a memory that will last with them forever :)

It was definitely a night we will never forget and a very good learning experience for us to check ahead of time with our children about what they are planning lol .

my daughter is 8 she has had a few sleepovers, but they are exhausting for me. Girls will stay up all night talking even though you tell them it's time to sleep. I got hardly any sleep on the last one. they will be giggling and loud. on the other hand though they should get to experience that, i think it's a part of growing up and i know i liked having sleep overs when I was young. it's only one night and it's not like he'll have to go through it all the time. I get it though, my boyfriend won't go for that at all, he goes out of town a lot for work, so I just have them when he is not at home.

myLot reputation of 97/100. webbmommy (611)  5 years ago

This is one of his concerns. Them not going to sleep. It is kind of like a rigth of passage for us girls though. Throwing our first sleepover party. I keep telling him it is going to happen sooner or later, he said he isn't so sure about that.

Yah that's what girls do, you gotta let them have fun and experience a sleep over. Sometimes i just don't understand men, mainly my boyfriend..lol

We have been having sleep overs for years...my daughters (10 and almost 14) have had friends stay o/n for their birthday starting at age 8.
What negative things is he concerned about? If you have things planned, the kids don't have time to get out of control.
My last sleepover was in March, when my youngest turned 10. The guests arrived at 7 and while waiting for other guests to arrive, the girls here already did a craft. Then they played games that were planned (no prizes)...we rented movies and made popcorn. The lights out time was 11, but i know they talked until later (they had the living room) but hubby and i went to bed. Sat am we made home made waffles for breakfast, encouraged the kids to gather up their stuff, gave them their goody bags and they played with bratz til it was time to go home (11) - it was a fairly easy party actually :-)
good luck!!

myLot reputation of 97/100. webbmommy (611)  5 years ago

I was thinking it would be fairly easy as well. I thought invite everyone over for a late afternoon party. Then the 3 girls that will sleep over can come for the big party, then stay the night and go home the next day. I was thinking movies, hair ribbons, and even nail painting (by me not the girls! I don't want to risk spilled nail polish! LOL) Daddy and son could even go hide out in the back room with video games. LOL

I wonder what the negative things are ?
My daughter had just one friend to sleep over as we really have nowhere for any more. We did suggest a tent in the garden(we have a big one) but she didnt like that idea.
They made pizza for themselves I just let them use the bases and a selection of food to put on top then just put it all in the oven for them.
They watched one of my daughters videos and played in her room with her dolls. Then they went to bed and spent all night chattering.:)
How about just two girls so dad can get used to the idea this year and have more girls next time around?

myLot reputation of 97/100. webbmommy (611)  5 years ago

The negative things my hubby listed were them not going to sleep, staying up all night talking, too mayn kids int he house, the effects on our younger children and them feeling left out, and him not being able to walk around not fully dressed. Not like he walks around naked, but you know he doesn't want to be walking around with no shirt on or anything with a bunch of little girls in the house. He doesn't have any sisters, so he doesn't really know anything about sleepovers, I personally think it is a fear of the unknown.

myLot reputation of 98/100. mihimolly (4889)  5 years ago

I can understand most of the misgivings.Couldn't it be on a non school night/non work night so it isn't such a problem about not going to sleep?
I understand about the being left out too as I used to go to my friends house and the little sister wa desperate to play too but the games were sometimes a bit rough for her.

well, my daughter had her first sleepover when she was seven. she just turned 9 two weeks ago and had 3 girls sleepover and she had a blast. 8 is certainly old enough...it sounds like maybe YOU and your hubby are the one a little nervous about it ;) just make sure you got lots of popcorn, a couple or movies and an activity. i had the girls play bingo for little prizes. let 'em stay up to 2am talking, it's the best part about being a kid! good luck and have FUN!

myLot reputation of 97/100. webbmommy (611)  5 years ago

I am not nervous about it, but hubby is. I am the one who keeps on bringing it up to him and he automatically starts groaning. I want her to have the sleepover, he is just not so sure. Now the problem is convincing him it is a good idea. LOL

I think eight is the perfect age to have a first slumber party. I had so many slumber parties when I was a kid, and I honestly think that the best ones, where the ones where we were no more than six kids. One advice though, is to make sure that there is an even number of girls, otherwise it can be a bit tricky, if they need to partner up or play games. I think your suggestion about setting up the ground rules with your daughter sounds very reasonable, and it sounds like you know what you are doing. What is it exactly that your husband seems to bothered by in regards to a slumber party? I cannot imagine that he ever tried to go to a girl slumber party....

Good luck with the birthday, I am sure that it will be a success!

myLot reputation of 97/100. webbmommy (611)  5 years ago

Yes I know, we do not want to have an odd girl out, so to speak. That is why I was thinking 3 girls to make an even 4. Lots of board games are for four players and all. They could easily play baord games and have tons of fun. If we did it on a Saturday night would church the next morning pose a problem though? Hmmmm. I swear my hubby is rubbing off on me, now I am over-thinking things. LOL

I don't think she is too young at all.
I'd say for sure keep it small.
Plan some fun food, games and maybe movies for them and they'll be happy campers.
Tell your hubby this is only the beginning :)

myLot reputation of 97/100. webbmommy (611)  5 years ago

I keep trying to tell him it is only the beginning, he has no clue. LOL

8 is the perfect age for a sleep over. Maybe 3 girls to sleep at your house, make sure you have plenty of snacks, movies, and things to do. Now with your husband, he's probably like me. Doesn't like all the noise and fuss from having extra kids in the house. But since he won't be dealing with it all, just tell him to go to the bedroom, watch tv and be quiet. If that doesn't shut him up, promise him something special if he stops complaining, :).

myLot reputation of 97/100. webbmommy (611)  5 years ago

Ha Ha Ha Ha, barter with him like I barter with my children when we have to go somewhere special! Now that is an idea! LOL I figure at 8 the girls can pretty much take care of themselves. I will oversee the party activities, btu they can play on their own, and go to the bathroom on their own, dress themselves and all of that. If they have a problem they can come and get me. We don't have a tv in our bedroom, at least not yet. Maybe that can be his something special? LOL

myLot reputation of 97/100. chertsy (2912)   ranked 826 out of 5,520 in shopping  5 years ago

The something special could be anything that he likes now if it's freaky, he will have to wait another night for that one, lol. Just tell him to be a good boy, lol, and it will be worth it.
