I absolutely love Greek food! I am Persian, but have always thought that Greek food tasted very similar to Persian food, but of course with it's own originality. Everything from the ingredients to the taste. Just so amazing. I love everything about Greek food. Everything from the essence to the flavor to the overall taste. It's so authentic, yet so natural and just so good.

I have a hard time choosing a favorite, however; I don't have a hard time choosing favorites. Some of my favorites include: spanakopita, tiropita, moussaka, saganaki, skordalia, zucchini pie, dolmathes, galatoboureko, karithopeta, iman baildi, baklava, tarama, finikia, and more.

I think if I had to choose my top two, I would easily choose spanakopita and tiropita.

What is your favorite Greek food?

Greek food is amazing. It's hard to describe. It's very similar to Persian cuisine, but also different too. It depends on what you like, as well. I am a vegetarian and find that Greek food is one of the best authentic foods that caters to my lifestyle.

oh yes spanakopita is a favorite of mine. When I was a girl I had a very good friend who was greek orthodox. Her church always had big bazaar events to raise money for charities and they had the BEST spanakopita I've ever had. It's so very good! I also love a nice, hot gyro. There aren't really good greek restaurants here in austin (at least I don't know of any) so I have to settle for mediocre stuff.
I also looove baklava as well. All that honey and butter -- how can you go wrong?
Is moussaka the eggplant dip? because I love that as well. Wait-- I think the eggplant dip I'm thinking of is actually turkish, not greek. Moussaka is like greek lasagne, isnt it?
This thread makes me hungry, lol!

I tried some spanakopita in NYC that was the best I ever ate. I've been to Greece about 3 years ago and even the spanakopita I tried over there didn't compared to the spanakopita I ate in NYC.

Moussaka is an eggplant and tomato pie. It kind of looks like lasgna in a round pan.

I wanted to tell you too, the best spanakopita I ever ate was at Periyali in New York City. It is, without a doubt, the best Greek food I have ever ate. The desserts are amazing, as well.

I'm Greek and I just loooove Greek food! One of my favorite foods is th gemista which is stuffed vegetables (tomatoes, eggplants, zucchinis, peppers etc).I'm not gonna go to the dessert because I just love them all. In reality, baklava and the similar desserts are common between all the eastern Mediterranean sea nations and I wouldn't say is Greek. One main difference between Greek food and the Middle Eastern Countries and Turkey is the seasoning. We use less seasonings in the food, like salt, pepper, oregano, cinnamon... and more or less that's about it (I'm talking for the everyday cooking of course). The interest thing about Greek cuisine and with Greece generally, is that represents the "East meets West" stereotype. And that's what makes it special, we took some spices from the east and mixed it with more western tastes. Anyway, I love seeing this kind of postings (of course). In case you'd like to find some recipe you could check out my humble page:
http://www.squidoo.com/greekcuisine/
I don't have tones of recipes and I don't have any desserts, but all my recipes are typical authentic home style Greek food the way we make it in our houses. Cheers!

I also love Greek food, and I love to cook, so I'll be sure to take a look at your page as soon as I'm done here:)
I just posted my favourites on another discussion, but I'll give you a run down too. lol Of course, the popular favourites... moussaka, spanikopita, cheese pies, calamari, prawn or mussel saganaki, octopus, and my absolute unbeatable favourite - lamb gyros, with lashings of tzatziki!!
I tried swordfish twice in Greece, and I have to say that the swordfish*steak* I had on Corfu was THE best meal I have ever had! It was served up with just a simple salad, and a lemon wede, nothing else needed!
I find it's hard to get good quality Greek food here in australia, as many places try to*Australianise* the food, and it loses that special something. My 3 exceptions are the Parthenon Souvlaki Bar in Hobart - home of the best gyros in Tassie! lol Mezedes is a reasonably new restaurant in Hobart, in the Salamanca area..it is truly divine..as is their retsina:) My favourite Greek restaurant is Stalactytes, in Melbourne..they serve THE best moussaka outside of Greece:)
