Could God have stopped the Virginia Tech shooting?  email this discussion to a friend?

I got an email today talking about the Virginia Tech shooting, Columbine, Amish shooting, and many others over the last years and decades. Could God have stopped the Virginia Tech shooting? Many would say that the answer is no, because he is not allowed in schools! What do you think about this controversy?

yes, the americans have so much to learn from this experience. they must get into the root of what has led the suspect to carry out such a gruesome crime. then the whole world will learn from it, too.

I am not sure about this.
Part of me says that this post is in bad taste
Part of me was laughing as I read it
At least I am honest
As for me,I now risk upsetting even more people than may have been upset at me having a wee laugh at your post, because I dont think that god exists at all.
Now you will see a real falling star, but as usual,I cannot mince my words and must say it as I see it.

Jimbo i know you do not believe in God,and that is your choice, but just because thats your opinion does not mean that there is no God.So laugh if you will, thats fine, but i honestly cannot understand WHY you answer post of people who do believe, you will never change our minds any more that we can change yours.I personally do not answer post that i do not believe in,out of respect..

myLot reputation of 83/100. jimbo45 (9380)  5 years ago

Ah,but i do fully respect what others say,my answer was pertinent to the question as I saw it,and I dont think it was wrong of me to answer in the way I did.

Well said, I see nothing funny about this discussion. People were murdered. Is it bad taste to ask if God could have stopped it? Not as bad as laughing at the discussion as a whole... Back to God.. I believe when God created this world, he designed all the forces of nature as well as free will. To step in would be against nature. He put nature into motion with all it's glory and draw backs. If he stopped the VA tech, he would have to stop the Tsunamis, hurricanes, and tornadoes that take human life, because God is no respecter of persons. What he does for one he will do for another... and what he won't do for one, has to be the same for the others as well.

No one can really know, those of us who believe in God, have to wonder ourselves why God would let things like this happen, but at the same time, I wonder why little girls and boys are kidnapped, raped and murdered... the same reason given for his lack of interference. I have to believe those people did not die in vain. There has to be some higher purpose for them to fulfill now that they are with God. These are my thoughts.

myLot reputation of 83/100. jimbo45 (9380)  5 years ago

Thats the good thing about forum,we can all give our opinions, disagree, and still be adults, and I do take on board what you said,I wonder if you really took on board what was said before
Anyway,if lessons had been learned about the daft gun laws and the right to bear arms, maybe this wouldnt have happened.
I think that man himself could have prevented this, and it would not have needed divine intervention,I am sure that wont take to much issue with that.

myLot reputation of 93/100. charlene2350 (4850)  5 years ago

I have to agree with your last comment, Jimbo45. If the man did not carry the gun, and have the thought in his mind to do this, it would not have happened... that is the way of all bad things that people do. The thought is there and they act on it. My question would be why do people have to have such evil thoughts to want to kill other people? Why not live and let live? Guess we'll never know this.

myLot reputation of 91/100. runningman72 (1075)   ranked 45 out of 6,502 in religion  5 years ago

Jimbo, absolutely I agree with you that you are entitled to your opinion, to believe what you believe, to answer how you feel fit, and I don't think that you should be docked for your honesty. I had no idea such a discussion as this would generate so much controversy, and I never intended it for humor. It was simply passing along a tidbit from a very interesting email I rec'd. I grew up a Mormon as did my father. He has since become agnostic or even atheist and evolutionist. He does read the Bible, but only so he can point out discrepancies in it and attempt to re-write it. I personally have gotten away from that religion as those people are nice family people, but simply are mislead. I am not a devout Baptist. Regarding the VT shooting, one of the saddest parts (besides the parents of the shooter who I cannot imagine what they are going through) is the fact that nobody (whether God, students, or police) did anything to prevent the additional 30+ from being shot after the initial. And the nerve of him to go to the post office and mail that package. What a confused young man! Sad.

A little note here. Evolution is part of the sciences of biology and anthropology, it is not a belief system. It is subject to constant growth and testing. Religions are not.

God has already laid the guidelines for us all to follow. Then He gave us all free will to do what is best for us. Some of us though, use this free will to follow the wrong path in life. God sees us do this, thus we are reminded that this is wrong by our conscience. Still, even if our conscience tells us that what we are planning to do, or doing, is wrong some of us will still pull it through. That's was what and how it was during the Virginia Tech shooting incident. God had intervened, but the culprit refused to listen. It was clearly his choice for, he used his free will when he carried out his plan as regards that massacre.

Yes God can do anything and he could have prevented it,but God does not work that way.He has left us with freedom of choice. If you was to investigate into this ,you will find that this person that done this shooting was sick,he was given parents, and a school, and friends and family and they all knew he was sick,it was their place to take care of getting him the help he needed..The school was aware of this young guys condition, why did they just allow it by not doing something themselves..????..Some people always want to blame God for everything, but God will not beat you up and go around preventing things,he is a gentleman and he has shown us the way and it is up to us to make the right choices..he will not force you to do right,he gave us a good mind and we are the ones who are suppose to make choices...Just like babies that are born sick and die,he could prevent that too,but women drink, smoke and do all kinds of sins and this kind of behavior can cause these babies to be born this way,not always but a lot of times. If we use our minds that God gives us and if we ask for something God will give us the desires of our hearts. It was the people that knew this person was sick to make a decision to get him help.,which they chose to ignore the facts and made the choice to let this sick person remain in school.I put the blame where it belongs, its not Gods job to go around pulling us out of our stupidity.....

slickcut, having had a chance to re read my reply,I stand by it.
The guy asked if god could have stopped the shooting,I answered not in my opinion because I dont think god exists, fair answer to what I said was a post that might just be in bad taste.I was honest about what I thought of the post,my reaction to it and the questions it contains, and my answer was honest to.

That is a little silly but when you look at the topic is is also funny and while it may be a joke it is so true that God is boycotted from schools ....at least many are trying to do that God is love and there is a reason that we donot know when things happen why it happened and what is the meaning ???? Good Luck

Its a joke right? if not then im going to comment ont he issue, it is maybe to the negligence of some school faculties on their students not so caring enough to know each others mind and just take it for granted.

If God could have stopped the Virginia Tech shooting then God could have stopped all the other shootings and all the other bad things happening in our life.
I think God is not there to stop or make things happen, he is there to watch over us and for us to
believe.
The guy who did the shooting obviously had no conscious and no God.

myLot reputation of 58/100. oldiebut (659)  5 years ago

Funny, he was certainly conscious, you cannot kill people when you are asleep. And considering how many mass murderers were religious, I tend to think it is likely he believed in god. You must admit it is exceedingly rare that people are killed in the name of science.

I come accross an article that is interesting. this could apply to Virginia Tech shooting as well.
------------
Billy Graham's daughter was interviewed on the Early Show and Jane Clayson asked her "How could God let something like this happen?" (regarding the attacks on Sept. 11).

Anne Graham gave an extremely profound and insightful response. She said "I believe God is deeply saddened by this, just as we are, but for years we've been telling God to get out of our schools, to get out of our government and to get out of our lives. And being the gentleman He is, I believe He has calmly backed out. How can we expect God to give us His blessing and His protection if we demand He leave us alone?"
----------------------------
In light of recent events...terrorists attack, school shootings, etc. I think it started when Madeleine Murray O'Hare (she was murdered) complained she didn't want prayer in our schools, and we said OK.

Then someone said you better not read the Bible in school ... the Bible says thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not steal, and love your neighbor as yourself. And we said OK.

Then Dr. Benjamin Spock said we shouldn't spank our children when they misbehave because their little personalities would be warped and we might damage their
self-esteem (Dr. Spock's son committed suicide). We said an expert should know what he's talking about. And we said OK.

Then someone said teachers and principals better not discipline our children when they misbehave. The school administrators said no faculty member in this school better touch a student when they misbehave because we don't want any bad publicity, and we surely don't want to be sued (there's a big difference between disciplining, touching, beating, smacking, humiliating, kicking, etc.) And we said OK.

Then someone said, let's let our daughters have abortions if they want, and they won't even have to tell their parents. And we said OK.

Then some wise school board member said, since boys will be boys and they're going to do it anyway, let's give our sons all the condoms they want so they can have all the fun they desire, and we won't have to tell their parents they got them at school. And we said OK.

Then someone said let's print magazines with pictures of nude women and call it wholesome, down-to-earth appreciation for the beauty of the female body. And we said OK.

Then the entertainment industry said, let's make TV shows and movies that promote profanity, violence, and illicit sex. Let's record music that encourages rape, drugs, murder, suicide, and satanic themes. And we said
it's just entertainment, it has no adverse effect, nobody takes it seriously anyway, so go right ahead.

Now we're asking ourselves why our children have no conscience, why they don't know right from wrong, and why it doesn't bother them to kill strangers, their classmates, and themselves.

Funny how simple it is for people to trash God and then wonder why the world's going to hell.

A funny post with carefully cherry picked history. To say that most of it is simply untrue or poorly analyzed is insufficient. Much of it is outright lying. I will simply consider his biased and uneducated source and ignore the whole thing.

God is still allowed in schools, ok so not the out loud type full on worship, but most schools I have gone to observed 30 minutes of silence in the morning where they could silently pray to whatever God they worshipped.

In my view of things man basically makes his/her own path in life. This "free will" thing a couple of other people have posted about recently. God is like a parent, is there to guide and be there when his children are sad or need an extra lift, but in the end that child needs to grow up and make his/her own decisions for him/herself. It may not always be the right one, but in the end the choices a person makes will eventually have to experience the consequences of such actions. Whether here on earth or in the after life. Like any parent, I would assume that God is not always happy with the decision his children make, but when it comes down to it, it's already been done and not much can be done about someone who has already chosen to go down the wrong path.

No. God has given us humans free will. He has let us choose our actions, whether they be good or bad. The shooters choice was his own, and he will be held accountable to God for it.
