Cameras have come a long way! |

| No girls and boys, pictures weren't always in color and taken with digital cameras. They also didn't cost between $75 and $1000! They were actually affordable to everyone who wanted one. No, Hasselblad or the first Japanese cameras arriving at stores didn‘t cause the big photographic blast of the 1950's and ‘60's. The popular camera was made out of plastic, had a simple lens, an undefined shutter speed and undefined lens aperture setting. The big news was the Brownie camera. Actually the Brownie wasn't new on the market. In fact, the Eastman-Kodak company had been selling Brownies since 1900. Many models were popular, but it wasn't until model 127 (in 1952) that your average person could afford one. It was the time of black-and-white pictures, most of them square, as required for 4x4 cm (1.5" x 1.5") film. (There were color 127 films, but they didn't produce sufficient quality due to abysmal shutter and lens aperture precision.) But a photograph in those years was black-and-white anyway. Same as TV!Not only did the Brownie change photography, it also changed tourism. Tourists could easily be identified by that piece of Bakelite plastic hanging around their necks. The Brownie 127 was produced as three different models, none so ingrained in the mind as the Starlet (with or without the round flash reflector on top). If pictures were to be taken indoors you had to have a flash so that the subject would be lit up enough for the camera to produce a picture. In today's world this all sounds so unbelievable doesn't it? I have a niece who was stunned when she saw old black and white photos that I have. | | An old Brownie Camera | | | | |

| | Yes..like technology has come a long way. It's really like that considering how advanced we've become. Some pictures of the past would really make today's generation wonder. | | | | | | |

| | I found a 1953 brownie movie camera at the flea market yesterday for only $8! It still works, too, I was so excited when I found it. It's missing the two lenses, but it's not like I can use it, anyway, because I doubt you'd be able to find the film. I also found the projector you'd use with it, for only $35, but I didn't buy that one because it was bulky and heavy, and I had only just started out in the flea market. I almost wish I had gone back to get it. I wish I could use the camera, too, because I've always wanted to make silent scary movies. This kind of camera seems so sturdy. The light guage still works too! | | | | | | |
