I have a BIRTHDAY Problem HELP!  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 91/100. giftsandbagscom (25583)   ranked 300 out of 9,015 in parenting 5 years ago

This is the problem. I have a young girl who stays with me a lot. Her father is on crack and her mother don't want her. Or her other kids. The girls birthday was on Monday. She was given nothing. MY daughter's Birthday is Saturday.
Every year my daughter has a nice party gift's. I was just sitting down trying to budget on this small party. How can I have my daughter a party and the girl will be here. I took her to the buffet last night she was very happy. I want to do my daughter's birthday with the Megan included.
Now the cake
invites
gifts for both
food to grill
etc. I can't do it for less than $100.00

People keep saying it's not my place to concern my self. Over megan's not having a party. I can't do this. Megan has no mother figure and no guidance. This would set her back deep in her sad spirits. How can I manage this? I am short on $ due to borrowing last month $125.00
Megan is with my daughter in my avatar. :)

someone promised the girl a cake from Carvel's she never got it. I am so lost and need to make up my mind today. Thanks for the help :)

You seem like a wonderful caring person. Now this girl who stays with you needs you. Why don't you include her in the party, in fact, have the birthday party for both girls, her and your daughter. No one ever said it wasn't possible. Megan deserves that much, can you imagine how happy she would be to share that day with your daughter, knowing that maybe she may get more than just cake and ice cream. I think you should do that. You may want to talk to them about this and see how they feel.
A party dosen't have to cost so much, you can probably do it for less than even 500 dollars. Don't be afraid to econimize, it will work out in the end. I wish you the very best in this situation. Megan should definetly be included.

I was so lost in my thoughts I thought my daughter's birthday was this Saturday it's next Saturday. I am going to ask the father to buy the chips and stuff with his food stamps. I think this should be fair enough. Only $20.00 should not hurt. I will join the 2 in what ever I decide. Thanks

Surly he could do that much.

I'm assuming they both have the same friends. Make it a joint party for both girls. Put both names on the same cake and then sit yourdaughter down and explain to herwhy she is sharing her party with her friend who has nothing. Tell her its her act of charity for the year to learn to share with those less fortunate han she is. One year I made my kids give one Chrismas present to some friends whose house was burglarized and trashed on Christmas eve while they were out at midnight mass, and they came to Christmas dinner with us. Its never to early to learn that there isalways room for one more at the table during festivities

By the way, you can throw a perfectly good party for less than $100, if you do a 50's or 60's theme and have home made games and hotdogs and cake and ice cream and jello, just like we did back then

I remember the fun we use to have. I know it will work out fine. I might save if I can try to make a cake. Thanks very much.

Dear giftandbags god bless you so much for wanting to include Megan in your daughters birthday party. I'm sorry that I have no solution for you. Maybe you could change the idea of grilling to just having finger foods for the kids to eat. Or maybe make it a potluck type party. again God Blessyou for caring for this young girl.

myLot reputation of 91/100. giftsandbagscom (25583)   ranked 300 out of 9,015 in parenting  5 years ago

You have helped so much. I nevr thought of the finger foods. I am good with this kind of stuff. Thanks very much for this. I must get my list while I read this post. :)

There are some ways to cut down the budget: Make the cake and put both girls name on it; make the invitations and put both girls name on them - limit the number of people they can invite; instead of grilling, make a large batch of something - red beans and rice, etc - that the majority of people will eat and make a fruit/veggie tray (you could always ask some of your friends and family to donate a dish); buy the napkins, paperplates, etc at the dollar store; instead of buying fancy gifts use this party as your gift to the girls.

myLot reputation of 91/100. giftsandbagscom (25583)   ranked 300 out of 9,015 in parenting  5 years ago

I can't promise to make the cake. I make dry cakes. I can shop at the dollar store though. This I can do today. I have no family to ask for a dish. Maybe her family can do this. Thanks so much

myLot reputation of 94/100. sedel1027 (12990)   ranked 173 out of 9,015 in parenting  5 years ago

I am not saying make the cake 100% from scratch - buy a cake mix that is a MOIST cake mix and use that. Also, Super Wal-Mart & Winn Dixie have very cheap cakes.

Most all kids like chocolate so here a mayonnaise cake recipe
MIDNIGHT MAYONNAISE CAKE

2 c. sifted cake flour
1 c. sugar
1/2 c. cocoa
2 tsp. soda
1/4 tsp. salt
1 c. mayonnaise (Kraft Miracle Whip)
1 c. cold water
1 tsp. vanilla

Sift cake flour, sugar, cocoa, soda and salt into bowl. Stir in mayonnaise, water and vanilla. When thoroughly mixed, beat well for 200 strokes, scraping spoon and bowl several times.
Pour into 2 floured and greased pans or one 9 x 13 x 2 inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes. Frost as desired.

Things like the cake can be homemade.
The invitations could be printed out on the computer if you have a printer or hand drawn by the girls.
The only real difference is megan will be there as a birthday girl instead of a guest. Talk to your daughter about it and see if she can come up with any ideas.

myLot reputation of 97/100. wendee (286)   ranked 123 out of 9,015 in parenting  5 years ago

I agree! As long as your daughter is ok with sharing her birthday (and i am sure that she would be) then have a joint party! Hope all works out for you! Please post and let us all know wha you decided to do and things went ok!

myLot reputation of 91/100. giftsandbagscom (25583)   ranked 300 out of 9,015 in parenting  5 years ago

My daughter would always be willing to share with anyone. The problem for me is my daughter is suffering hard with peer pressure. She don't want kids to see her pay less shoes. Even though she loves them. The lower costing clothes etc. I planned on going to the old navy outlet to buy her some clearance items. I already have some shirts from t j max clearance hidden. If I have a party for the both and it sucks because of low funds. My daughter would never forgive me. I am trying to teach my daughter not to care about the other kids. It's hard to do with the bull she had to deal with already. Now Megan is being picked on. I had to meet her yesterday because kids pulled her hair hard on the bridge. This girl walked an hour out of her way to my house frightened. I was on one side waiting on her. I want to have a cost effective party no one will laugh at. I don't plan on decorations and such. But truly speaking My money is gone. I have to get a blessing somewhere. Thanks
p.s I can't make the cake. I make dry cakes and would embarrass my daughter. They have cheap store cakes with frosting in the middle. Or Carvels cake

myLot reputation of 97/100. deebomb (10022)   ranked 282 out of 9,015 in parenting  5 years ago

reading about the way the kids are treating Megan just make me furious. If you can make the pary fun enough they will forget about the cost. Have the kids dress for a fifie party or something like that. That'll send them to the thrift store.

myLot reputation of 98/100. mihimolly (4889)  5 years ago

How about having the party later on when money is not so tight?
My daughter would not invite anyone to a party who was going to criticize the quality of her belongings.
How about a trifle instead of a cake? It is cake with jelly and fruit and topped with custard. It wont matter how dry the cake is because it is soaked in jelly and fruit juice.
We used to have small tea parties for our kids birthdays. 2 or 3 friends would come and have tea of sandwiches ,cake or trifle and play in the garden.
It was not stressful and the kids chose best friends to come.
We didn't expect a present to be given and it was lovely if they brought one. They had a fun time and went home happy.
We had balloons and water pistols and told parents not to dress them in their best clothes.

myLot reputation of 91/100. giftsandbagscom (25583)   ranked 300 out of 9,015 in parenting  5 years ago

This sound very nice in deed. I have never heard of the trifle. I will be doing it from all the advice I have hear. I know it will be nice for them. I don't care about the others opinions. I never give cheesy party's. It will be on Saturday and very hot. I thought it could be finger foods like mentioned here. A nice sheet cake, some chips etc. Thanks so much

Megan is a lucky girl to have you in her life. It is so sad to see parents not care about the ones they bring into the world. I understand about the cost of parties, they can get expensive. The girls look old enough to understood the lack of funds, so I think you sharing the party for both of them can be fun for all! Everyone here has given great advice about adding both girls names to the cake and invitations. As far as food goes anything will usually work for kids, it is all about having fun and enjoying the gifts brought by others. You and the girls could make the cake together, you can make party decorations from stuff around the house. Make this a creative party with little money invested. Good luck to you and the girls. By the way please say Happy Birthday to both of the girls from me (Wanda)

What a sad situation this little girl is in! I woudl be the same as you trying to do all that I could for her. You can probably do the party for under $100, however you would have to scale down the party and not make it so elaborate. YOu could make frozen pizzas and make your own cake or cupcakes. You can make cookies and other treats cheaply and cut up your own veggies and fruit and make dips for them. Plus do chips and dip. Then make lemonad or kool aid to drink and everyone would have a great time!

I wish you luck with the party. And give those birthday girls some extra hugs from us!

myLot reputation of 91/100. giftsandbagscom (25583)   ranked 300 out of 9,015 in parenting  5 years ago

Now th kool-aid was a help. I was going to buy capri sun's for the kids. This saves me a lot right there. Thanks and yes the girls will get the hugs. :)

I think you definently should include Megan. If it were me, I would take my daughter aside and explain to her, that we will be celebrating both birthdays together this year, as Megan's should be celebrated as well. YOu can def. do a party for under 100 dollars, I would have the party at 2:00, that way, most people ate at home, then you can just serve chips/snacks and the cake and icecream. Also, you could have an Ice cream bar. One of my friends did this, (then you just buy/make a small cake.) buy carmel, and m&m's and other little candies to add to thier sundae's. THere are a lot of fun thigns you can do for a party, they can have a sleep over, they can rent movies and stay up all night long with thier friends etc. Also, have your kids help make the invites, and the decorations. I'm sure they can make some really nice one's online. I don't think you need to spend a lot of money, for the girls to have fun! Good luck!

myLot reputation of 91/100. giftsandbagscom (25583)   ranked 300 out of 9,015 in parenting  5 years ago

I like the idea of an ice cream bar. Is this set up on a table or a real bar? I am glad to be getting such great ideas for the girls. I will have to let you all know how it went. I have a couple of days to see what happens. Thanks very much..

myLot reputation of 96/100. wmaharper (1580)   ranked 150 out of 9,015 in parenting  5 years ago

Just on a folding table is fine. We set out the different candies in little bowls with spoons, so they could add them to thier icecream as needed. Also, the whipped cream in a can is great. Good luck. I"m sure your girls will have a blast! oh yes, I almost forgot. Tell them happy birthday!!! (:

I think that it is so nice of you to have a party for both girls together. YOu can get Megan a smaller gift~ less expensive than you would spend on your daughter. When inviting family, ask if they can bring a munchie and just have munchies and cake.
Remember that birthdays are for celebrating life. Just have fun and do things a bit simpler this year. I think that Megan will remember this for her entire life.

YOu are doing the right thing. Don't let anyone tell you that you aren't. You obviously are a loving mother and this girl sees that. Keep giving her the love you have and have a great time with the party.
