Freedom of speech

In Memphis, Tn there has been controversy over a rap group called Three 6 Mafia. They are a hometown group that won an Oscar for their song in the movie "Hustle & Flow". They have been a group in Memphis for years and now are being recognized since the movie. They play at the music festival every year and are slated to come home to play as a headliner this weekend. There is a columnist for the major newspaper that is trying to put a stop to them performing due to the graphic nature of their lyrics toward women.The columnist has used this to get national attention for herself, which she has been known for trying to do in the past. This is just to get her fame and not for any other reason, which is why I won't mention her name so I won't contribute to her fame. I agree that degrading women is wrong and most rap artist do it, but there is another side to looking at this.
There is a thing called freedom of speech. That means that you can disagree with someone, but you can not take their speech rights away. You are even able to challenge them to a debate if you want. In the past few years political groups have tried to heighten the rage of people to ban certain type of movies, music, and other types of entertainment. Our rights are being violated if they succeed. We were given the right to free speech the same way we were given the right to vote.
We as citizens have the right of choice. You can chose not to listen, watch, or read any type of entertainment. Just remember that God made all people different, so what you find as good entertainment another might like.
At this festival there is alot of performers that will perform, some have degrading lyrics too. These other groups are not mentioned as a problem by the columnist. Three 6 Mafia even made a public statement on the radio that they will tone down lyrics because they are aware of it being all ages. Three 6 Mafia even said their own mothers will be there to watch their performance.
All of the hype the columnist has created has still not made a difference in the decision by the festival officials. Three 6 Mafia is still going to play and life will continue and the columnist will continue to try to get national attention for herself.
