Heavy Reading |
This may take a little work on your part, but it could be fun. Describe the heaviest book that you own. I'm not talking philosophically or theoretically, but simply. How much does your heaviest book weigh? So far, the heaviest book that I have is Webster's Unabridged Dictionary. It's blue. It weighs 9 pounds (4.08 kilograms.) Come on, take a break, get up from the computer, and weigh those books! Get a little exercise.:)

1. eden32 (2734) | 1 year ago | oh damn, I don't have a scale! Some of my midwifery books are monsters. I have an A&P book that I'd be willing to bet weighs at least 5lbs and Holistic Midwifery Vol2 that I would guess is close to 10. It's so heavy, big & unyielding that even though it's a great book with almost any info I need for school, I seldom go to it first for fear of spraining my wrist!

Transdisc (13870) | 1 year ago | Wow, your Holistic Midwifery book sounds like a monster, eden32. I hope that you can find a scale because I am really curious, now. Watch that wrist!

Transdisc (13870) | 1 year ago | Fortyseven pounds?!? I cannot believe that, buldwgz! Where do you keep it? I bet that you can come up with a lot of uses for something that heavy. I just don't know how to respond to that.
| |
buldwgz (879) | 1 year ago | It makes a fantastic paper weight. I keep it in storage acgtually. It's too big to be of any practicality. I mean, who in their right mind would even make a book that big? What would be the point? The people that gave it to me were so proud too, I wish you could have seen them. I was speechless, but mostly because I wanted to cry out of just how sad it was...LOL.

Transdisc (13870) | 1 year ago | I soooo wish I could have seen your face and the face of the ones who gave you this on the day that it was presented to you, buldwgz. Did they use a hand truck to move it about? How did you transport it? Did you have to hire a truck? Hehe.

buldwgz (879) | 1 year ago | Have you ever seen the movie Vacation? There is a scene where Clarke Griswold (Chevy Chase) is ringing a bell in a saloon for service and he has this look on his face that is priceless. I can only imagine that is how I looked.
| |
Transdisc (13870) | 1 year ago | Yes! I've seen that movie and I do know the scene of which you speak. I know that look. Thanks for the description. Now, if I only knew what you looked like this would all make sense. Wait a minute.....you must look like Chevy Chase?!

3. DeaXyza (332) | 1 year ago | Trans my dear the heaviest book I own is How to be a network engineer and The complete works of sherlock holmes both weigh about the same. I feel SH weighs lesser as it is hardbound and the network book is a paperback of about 900 pages only, whereas the sherlock holmes has more than 1200 pages! I think thickness of pages also makes difference! I do not own a large dictionary I am used to going to m-w.com for all my dictionary problems! I think I should get one just incase..... thanks for the topic
| |
| |
Transdisc (13870) | 1 year ago | I agree that the page quality will affect the weight, DeaXyza. I had a bigger book on World War II history that I thought would be heavier, but I was surprised to see that the dictionary was heavier. Different paper.

4. smuggeridge (1609) | 1 year ago | Damn it you beat me. My hard back copy of the Lord of the Rings comes to 3.9KG, my Atlas i think is heavier but i don't have that here so can't find out
| |
| |
Transdisc (13870) | 1 year ago | No worries, smuggeridge, it looks like it's going to be hard for anyone to beat the 47 pound monster that one respondant has reported. I bet that Lord of the Rings book is cool. Does it have any illustrations in it?
| |
smuggeridge (1609) | 1 year ago | I know bibles are big, but 47pounds! whats it made from? LOTR is a good book lots of pictures, only problem with it being so big is that you can't really carry it around with you so have to read it at home
| |
Transdisc (13870) | 1 year ago | Yeah, I can see not carrying it around, but it hey, it would still be fun to read at home.

5. teapotmommommerced (3973) | 1 year ago | The heavest books I own are my nursing books I used when I was in nursing school. My med surg book is not 9lbs but it is heavy but count adding all the other books I had to carry with me on a daily baises when I was in school. I do not think I could carry them today. Come to think of it I could carry them if I had to if I really wanted to get through school. LOL

Transdisc (13870) | 1 year ago | Those medical books are heavy, teapotmommommerced. My wife still has hers hanging around here.

6. Erilyn (431) | 1 year ago | I wish i could weigh my books now lol. My heavest and most precious books are at my mothers house in a bookcase. With the kids I didn't want to chance my books becomming damaged. Now that the kids are older I have been thinking about getting them. My heavest one would probably the bible my popou brought from Greece. It's easily 3 feet thick. It has metal clasps on it to keep it closed. It is hand written in Greek, hand bound, It has been in my family for generations. My uncle took it once to have it appraised about 10 years ago and it was worth over $20K. It is gold leafed, It is absolutly gorgous. I might have to call her later and have her weigh it lol. To help keep it safe I used her vacuume sealer and sealed it up to keep the air off it, and to help keep it from getting damaged.

Transdisc (13870) | 1 year ago | Wow, that is an impressive sounding book, Erilyn. I can see why you cherish it. I would love to see a book like that. I love the new highlights added to your Avatar.
| |
Erilyn (431) | 1 year ago | Thank you on both counts! I decided to change it a bit and get rid of the black. It's bad enough I have been a bit moody lately, and I don't think the black was helping.
| |
Transdisc (13870) | 1 year ago | I saw that you're original plan was to have a white background. That would be cool, too. The black was nice, but it was hard to see the whole graphic against the black background.
| |
Erilyn (431) | 1 year ago | Yeha I was going to go with the white, but I thought that maybe the colors would be more cheery. you are right it was hard to see against the black. Now you can see the rose a bit clearer.
| |
Transdisc (13870) | 1 year ago | Yes, I can see the rose. Before, I thought that it was some abstract shape, maybe a box and the butterfly was emerging from a box. That's what I thought. I like all the colors.
| |
Erilyn (431) | 1 year ago | Thats not a bad idea actually. I haven't been very creative lately and it has been a while since I have created anything new. You should see some of the ones I used to do. I don't have the right programs for those anymore though. I did sell some of my work before, now its just for pleasure.
| |
Transdisc (13870) | 1 year ago | Don't beat yourself up. I think that your work is wonderful. I'm proud of myself if I'm just able to get through the day without my computer freezing up, much less creating something like you do.
| |
Erilyn (431) | 1 year ago | Oh I didn't mean to seem that I was, I just don't have much creativity lately. I go through times like this when I just can't think of anything to create. I am surprised that I can still write at least a little bit lol.

7. whyaskq (4233) | 1 year ago | I do not have any heaviest book as I do "dismantle" my book which are too heavy to carry daily. I just carry sheets of pages around. That was when I was still in school. Now, I don't read books which are bulky and heavy to carry about. The heaviest so far I have read, I think are manuals. They come in thick files which I cannot dismantle as it is not my property.
| |
| |
Transdisc (13870) | 1 year ago | That's a nifty idea to be able to dismantle your books, whyaskq.:)

8. alfieklondyke (1047) | 1 year ago | All my books gain weight as i work my way through them. This is due to the consistency of the crayons that i use to colour them in. My wife has a heavy tome that weighs 22lbs. It is called 'the idiotic and senseless deeds of Alfie Klondyke.'
| |
| |
Transdisc (13870) | 1 year ago | Your wife must be quite the colorer, alfie. How many boxes of crayons has she gone through working on your autobiography? I know that you are very proud of her.

9. kfrisk (2827) | 1 year ago | I don't know how much it weighs exactly as I do not have a scale, but my Intro to Literature book is the biggest & heaviest book that I own! It is huge and all the print in it is teensy weensy so it's hard to read on top of it! LoL Very interesting topic!
| |
| |
Transdisc (13870) | 1 year ago | I had one of those books once, kfrisk. My roommate in college used his to prop up his bed. The bed had a broken leg, and that book wasd the perfect size for the job.

10. nerdytina (1592) | 1 year ago | Alright, I found two books that seem to weigh about the same. It's definitely not 9 pounds--though i'd love to have an unabridged dictionary in my collection! The first is the DSM-IV. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Then, there's a book called kARTell, which is a photographic portfolio, 150 photographers for 150 images. This is one of my boyfriend's books that I haven't really looked at much. It looks pretty interesting, so thanks for making me explore the shelf a little differently than I normally would! Both books weigh in at about 4 pounds.
| |
| |
Transdisc (13870) | 1 year ago | Those are both hefty books, nerdytina. I would hate to have to carry those any distance. Thanks for adding a bit of weight to the discussion.:)
