Could you survive a week without leaving your house & with no with power? |
|
I was just thinking about rough weather leaving people stranded and how I like to keep a buffer of things to tide us over in tight moments. Not spending anything as I wouldn't be able to reach any shops and they couldn't deliver to me either, I think I could hold off for a week if I got creative with ingredients. We have a box of powder milk, about a weeks tuna and minced lamb a sack of potatoes, flour, fat etc If we needed to we could do without the electricity and even manage with the gas turned off for the week. I think we would have trouble if the water were turned off. We would make a fire in the garden to cook on (we have a camp cooker but it needs petrol so we would have to siphon it from the car),we have one of those solar showers which would be alright if it was sunny but useless if not. Would you be able to manage? What would you do to cope?

1. nurhoney (470) | 3 years ago | everybody should be aware of the weather forecast coz with that, it will be a big help in informing us about the weather. now, if such catastrophe might happen and because you were aware of it, then nothing we can do but to survive until it will end. we cant complain if ther isnt any electricity or water either. its not about if you could survive but its about how to survive. we just need to survive...giving up isnt the solution either.

mihimolly (4889) | 3 years ago | That's true the weather forecast could be handy. Years ago in the UK we had a hurricane(very very unusual here) and we were stranded for a week in the countryside. Sadly the forecast didnt warn anyone as they had said it would miss the UK. We were lucky because the gas still worked and so we could cook but the electricity and telephone were down and no going to shops because we had trees all over the roads. A big bit of our roof had blown off.We managed quite well because it was cool weather and everything did not go bad even though the freezer was not running. It was a fairly minor disaster for us.

nurhoney (470) | 3 years ago | wow...good to know that you guys handled yourselves well...sometimes the forecast miss little details especially when weather conditions can change in just a split second...always keep emergency things intact in case of things like that...its better prepared than be sorry.

2. charms88 (4698) | 3 years ago | Oh no, indeed, I can survive without leaving my house for a week, but I can't survive without any power. Last year, there was a strong typhoon that hit my country. We were left with no power for three days. The first day, I was still in good shape. The second day, I was close to tears. The third day, I was howling with the agony of living like a cave woman. An hour of no power is suicide already, LOL! Its a good thing that we have enough supplies of goods to last us that long. Otherwise, I don't know what to do anymore.

mihimolly (4889) | 3 years ago | luckily for us we have a fair amount of cold weather so most houses have warm clothes and extra bedding. We were snowed in for nearly a week in the same house as I mentioned above that had had the hurricane. We had no power then either .We lit the house with oil lamps and cooked on the gas hob. When i was a child there were strikes by the miners which meant no coal to power the power stations. We spent quite a few evenings with lamps for lighting and played cards or read. It was like a holiday.

3. yanjiaren (5097) | 3 years ago | At my Mum's place we could because she always has stock, extra in the cupboards and she buys evaporated tinned milk. I DON'T QUITE KNOW WHAT I WOULD DO AS i CAN'T REMEMBER THE OTHER INGREDIENTS LOL..BUT I WOULD PROBABLY BE BLOATED AFTER CONSUMING A HEFTY AMOUNT OF PASTA, PASTA AND MORE PASTA..LOL.

mihimolly (4889) | 3 years ago | My son loves pasta. He had left over bolognaise for breakfast this morning. I think we could last longer if we had tinned foods but most of our meat type stuff goes in the freezer. So really 7 days would be the limit unless we were veggies for a week. At the moment we could live off rhubarb as we have loads growing outside.

4. keda69 (2123) | 3 years ago | Definately - The only thing that bothers me is the cold water part. Other than that I would have no problem reading, writing, drawing, lighting a fire for heat and tea... It would probably almost be bliss to escape from the rat-race for a while. I barely watch tv as it is.
Of course it would have to be without my cell as well, otherwise it would be of no use.

mihimolly (4889) | 3 years ago | Yes sounds a bit like camping now I come to think of it. We have a little wind up radio that is a torch aswell and my kids have wind up mobile phone chargers. I wish they would hurry up and invent the wind up laptop.I would have one of those. It wouldn't be much use though if the modem is electric would it,at least it wouldnt go on the internet.

6. tinamwhite (1973) | 3 years ago | My home is total electric so we have been talking about getting a generator as back up in case of a storm that knowcked the power out for several days....however, we camp out alot and we have our camper set up with canned goods...fresh water and it has a propane cook stove in it...we have a large propane tank that we keep full in anticipation of our nxt trip....
We would be ok...we would not like it..URGGGGHHHH....no internet; no television; but we do have a portable DVD player, so my husband would not have to go through movie withdrawls....LOL
I have a big chest freezer full of meats...so that would probably be my biggest concern if the power stayed off for very long...would hate to loose all of that meat!
We also cut our own firewood for when we go camping...so building a fire would be no problem.....and we have a 6' x 3 1/2' fire pit in the yard that has a natural rock border that my husband and 26 yr. old son built when we bought our house...we build a fire alot in when the weather permits.
If we took our camper to the river or lake....we would be completely happy...
Interesting topic, my friend.

mihimolly (4889) | 3 years ago | We were told when the hurricane happened that if we wrapped out freezer with blankets and didn't open it,it would stay frozen about 3 days. Well ofcourse that is fine but soon you must open it because that is where the food is LOL We shared our meals with a neighbour as she also had her freezer foods to eat. Good thing it wasn't the height of summer or things would have become desperate fairly quickly. I might play some more with my dehydrator this year(I only bought it last year so haven't experimented past the drying simple things stage). Dried goods are always handy so long as there is water to rehydrate them.

7. mlgb_24 (454) | 3 years ago | i have experienced that before, a week fo now electricity and in the house. we survived on canned foods and bread. the water, we need to fetch from the nearest water pump. and buy drinking water. it's hard when you're used to the simple luxuries of life. but where i live now, i think it would be hard. as our water is run from electric. and if gas goes off as well, my, it would be too cold. but i have lived a life with no washing machines and all, and yet i was happy and survived well. i think living simply is easy, as long as you know exactly what you would want your life to be.

mihimolly (4889) | 3 years ago | cool! Do you have a water supply as well? We have a camping lantern that runs on petrol and it used to warm up the tent on cold camping hols. We havent got a gas heater and I dont know if the gas fire works without electricity as it is a back boiler aswell but I think it probably does as I think it ignites with a flint. I guess it could be ignited with a match but im not about to try it.

mihimolly (4889) | 3 years ago | We have a river not far away but it isn't drinkable.Im not sure I would even risk drinking it boiled but maybe I would if I was desperate. We'd collect rain water too and we'd boil that.
