Photo Websites--Are you for or against them? |
|
This is actually a heated issue not only with me but for other fellow photographers...I'm talking about those photo websites where everyone and anyone who has photos can upload them for possible sale and use by not only the publishing media but by anyone I've been in the photography business a long time, since 1977. My first published photo was on the cover of the April 1980 issue of Unity magazine and I received $100 then. Up until the popularity of those websites like iStockphoto, most of us photographers dealt with clients of the publishing trade on a one to one level..yes, there were stock photo agencies then too...but the piece of the cut when hooked up with one was 50/50..that is the photographer got have of the income of that one photo. Back then I thought that was a lousy deal, and instead worked with publishers directly..why should I sell my photo and get only $50 when I could get $100? Now it's worse..With these "microstock" websites that are predominately what is called "Royalty Free" sites, anyone and everyone with a camera can upload a photo for sale--and they are fooled in thinking that they are going to make a fortune... Royalty Free means a client wanting a photo can go to these sites like iStockphoto or even Shareapic, download and pay a mere $1 or $2 and have UNLIMITED use of that photo, using it as many times as he/she pleases...what is the photographer's cut in this? A mere 25 cents per hit--that means everyone who downloads that photo of yours you get 25 cents for it....Now for all those who are looking to make a little extra money might think..gee that's great. Nor for us "professionals"As a result of these kind of photo websites,is that the market is saturated with images...what used to be good popular images..say that beautiful photo of a flower with a butterfly...a photo of a lion, trees in the fall are a dime a dozen... They're no longer wanted. Photographers are in stiff competition with one another. It cheapens the "art" of photography and makes it damn difficult for a photographer like myself to make a living. Now I'm not criticizing anyone who wishes to go this route...I'm all for anyone wanting to earn a few extra bucks,..but even the publishing industry doesn't really care for these sites, since they like to think that the image that they are using is one that is unique for their needs and hasn't been already used a thousand times already.. Maybe I'm just venting here a bit...but I certainly think my photo work is worth far more than just 25 cents! What are your views on this? I especially want to know if you're a fellow pro photographer, but all views will be welcomed

1. scarlet_woman (8859) | 3 years ago | i agree the pay is too low. some of the art on demand sites are like this too. you only get 10%. one i'm on,for a shirt,i get like 2 dollars, while they make 20.it's disgusting.even 30/70 would be fairer.i know there's overhead, but come on.
i started dividing things into special work/works for public, with a link back to my real site,so they can get one of the other works, and i get full $ if they buy it.kind of a sampler,of sorts.

2. unusualsuspect (2413) | 3 years ago | As a non-photographer, I can appreciate the effect these sites have had on professionals, but I also see a parallel--writing. Actually, there are many parallels because changing technologies, including the internet, have made it possible for more and more people to do things and make money in areas that were once the exclusive realm of professionals.
I see that as mainly good, though it makes it much more difficult for anyone to stand out from the crowd. Professional have to work harder to distinguish themselves from the crowd, but amateurs also have a chance to improve their skills and talents and become professionals. It's good to have a range of skills and a range of payment levels, with the chance for everyone to do better. At least most professionals aren't like buggy whip makers, who simply disappeared when automobiles came along.

pyewacket (11622) | 3 years ago | I agree about the writing angle too...you have site like Helium and Gather and only get paid peanuts for your articles...when in the "old" days a writer could get maybe hundreds for that same article--

3. GnosticGoddess (3490) | 3 years ago | I agree with you. How could a professional photographer really make anything on a site like those. I have signed up for one but they didn't need my pics 'cause they're too common. I gave up on them. I figure I'll get my pictures out there or I won't. But that's most likely not going to be the way I do it.

4. tigerdragon (2986) | 3 years ago | i am not a professional photographer nor someone who can capture good things on cam but i myself don't want any of my pics to be shared by anyone in the net because if my pics are one of a kind and i will only get pennies for that then i would not bother to share it.i would rather use my photos to promote my site and my expertise, if i am a good photographer.i am tempted to join several sites but i just decided not to for that reason. i find it unfair.

5. LittleMel (6484) | 3 years ago | I never tried those sites plus I'm not a photographer either. But for sure I can tell difference between a pro and amateur works because I took basic course on photography a while back although I didn't finish it. But those who just love pictures they would be attracted to the deals since they don't know better. If you are already a photographer, why not go a step above, becoming photojournalist? Someone told me this profession is still highly in demand. I wish you good luck!

6. toptrad (137) | 3 years ago | i think that anything in creation is unique. Whether it is a person, an object, a place, a situation, or just a moment in time. Therefore it deserves to be preserved. Sorry if people want to claim these things for themselves, but there is more to art than money.

7. highflyingxangel (8990) | 3 years ago | I'm not involved in them too much, I just use royalty free photos for my writing. I do know a few people that are trying to make a few extra dollars off of them and the thing is, that's all that really can be made for them and in all honesty, I really do think the pay is too low. I think people that upload their photography are fooled into thinking that making money with their photographs is extremely easy.
However, making money online, as we all know, isn't easy and it's not a get rich quick scheme. In fact, even if you do photography outside of the internet, you're not going to get great pay unless you a world renouned photographer. People have to start somewhere.
