Why are our servicewomen denied birth control? |
| |
| (Received this from Naral Pro-choice. I know this is a tiny matter compared to out servicemen and women being in this war from the start, but nonetheless this is a significant issue) Dear Friend, Did you know that federal law does little to protect the reproductive rights of women serving in the military? Not only are servicewomen banned from accessing abortion care at military medical facilities, but some cannot even obtain emergency contraception, which can prevent unintended pregnancy if taken soon after sex, at their base pharmacy. This week, Congress has an opportunity to improve health care for women in the military. The Compassionate Care for Servicewomen Act would add Plan B to the list of medications that must be stocked at every military health-care facility. | | | | | |

| | The sad fact of the matter is that once you enlist in the military, you are basically signing away all of your freedoms, not just the ones you mentioned. | | | | | | |

| | Contraception is nothing about health care. It is preventing babies being born. So I guess babies are a disease. Besides if creeps and perverts find out that you will get contraceptive, they will come onto service women with no fear of consequences. Besides if you are in the military, isn't your duty to defend your country instead of fooling around? There are more important needs like protection against gas attacks, poisons sent in by enemy agents, foreign diseases and infections, prostetics, etc. | | | | | | |

| | Does this comment include men in the military? Should they check their libido until their hitch is up? Never to be a normal male during their off times? Is this comment only for women? | | | |

| | Charlene, I totally agree with you. And that's why suspenseful's post was flawed. Its very easy for people to set a double standard and tell women to keep their legs closed, while a male's sexual virility is glorified. Both men and women shoudl ahev equal access to birth control in the military. | | | |

| | Well I don't necessarily think they should be getting abortions on our dime. The morning after pill is something I am on the fence about. Technically it is a chemical abortion. As far as the pill or any other type of birth control I feel they should get full access. | | | | | | |

| | The morning after pill is nto an aborticent, as it misguidedly belived to be. It does nto terminate a fetus, it just prevents a pregnancy, similarly to the pill | | | |

| | You are mistaken. The morning after pill is a chemical abortion. Whether you or anyone else wants to accept that. It works by not allowing the fertilized egg to attach to the uterus. So a person can't get pregnant because of it. The baby to be goes down the toilet. Birth control pills prevent ovulation. With no egg there is no pregnancy. This info is available to anyone who wants to take the time to look for it. | | | |

| | This is just my opinion, but when a woman chooses to Marry someone in the Service, they know what they could be getting themselves in when their husband has to be transfered away from them for a while, or goes to War in Iraq that if they end up getting Pregnant, I feel that is their intentions and choice, and allowing Drugs to stop it, etc like this are uncalled for. I know this is only my opinion, but most women who are Service wifes should be proud to carry a Service mans baby if they truly Love their husband. | | | | | | |
