hip hop is a style and a sub culture... just because you see baggy jeans and boots don't mean there will be a crime committed there is no correlation between one's apparel and partaking in a crime... and for those who see a oversized t shirt, chains, jeans, and
in fear grab there purses should check the volume of their own securities...

why is it that people are always looking at the negative aspects of hip hop and not the good... you know why because negative sells...
in society the media, movies television, politics... just pick one sells negativity and people buy it and then complain about it...

its always hot when something negative is protrayed... but no one shows the good hip hop does for the community...

I would suggest here that Lecrae be mentioned as they are Christian rappers and have a strong message. I agree with you, appearance is only skin deep. You cannot judge a book by its cover. The truer issue in higher levels of crime is not from the music youth listens to. It's from the lack of direction and guidance youth need to grow into mature, accountable and responsible adults. Which speaks to a lack of mature, accountable and responsible adults who should be raising, guiding and directing their children. If children were guided to understand 'hate' music and 'hate' music were not beaten down by the 'old' folk, children would be less curious and interested in imitating the 'haters' to get the attention they are not otherwise getting from their negligent absent parents.

I do agree in some aspects, quidence starts from the home yet what do you do when you have no home... therefore where does your guidence come from... most of these children today have un-stable homes and look to the streets for the answers... quick dollar quick meal quick fix.... these days in all aspects of youth they are weaker yet wiser why work for it when you can do it faster and get more money... there is a gap missing in between to conform stablitiy...

to give you a good example I know a good family, wealthy and very stable... had 6 kids praised them when they did good, and punished them when they did bad...yet their son... the oldest turned to a life of crime... and dishonesty... so I ask was it his parents... or his enviorment... I think it was his enviornment...

and music is what it is... most of it tells a life story... and because its a bad life story is it then hate? but you are sooo right as a child you are suppose to be taught moral and ethics which will then give you the free will to distinguish good music from bad...

I was a rebel teen in the 80s. I have two sons born by the same man who was an even greater rebel. By family standard, their father had the most upstanding family yet he too turned to a life that was not so untarnished. Upstanding citizen he is not. What made the difference between he and I (and by this I'm not suggesting perfection, simply a divergence of paths one less traveled by)? . . . I retained faith he did not. I think it takes a village to raise a child. The first line of defense is the parent or nuclear family. A strong church family, a strong community, a strong set of role models who are not afraid to get themselves dirty, take accountability, take responsibility and guide and lead children - Psalm 127 speaks to arrows pointed in the right direction . . . that is not to say a wind can't distract an arrows aimed path, but aiming children in the right direction helps. Talking with children, even the rebellious ones, giving a care to their well being makes a world of difference in a child (arrow) who may be carried by the wind and replicate hate crimes - even the best of people have problems and until someone cares enough to ask the questions that are tough and get vulnerable themselves to show they care - the wind can carry even the best aimed arrows astray.

and your so right a good foundation is what we need but don't have... there is a gap missing within our children... grandmothers are raising their grandchildren but where are the parents... some of these kids don't have a home so what do we say to them... when the question is ask where is your parent and the child replies I don't know... and even so those who are good parents which are raising there kids the right way sometimes these kids turn out to be bad apples...today in this generation the meia is the parents... radio, televison and etc...

Hip hop is not the problem, it is the lack of morality and value base in the children today. As a parent I regulate what my children see listen too and wear. I am the parent I buy the clothes, I pay the electric so you will not listen to something I feel is inappropriate in my house. Society bombards your senses with the bling and the radio stations plays the music over and over but it is our jobs as parents to guide and build our children's self esteem and confidence. It is our job to teach them self respect and individuality, to be independent thinkers (leaders) not followers. Families are suppose to raise the children, teachers are suppose to educate them and the government needs to govern what society solicits. They are allowing things that when I was a child we didn't have cursing on the radio or tv now it is on there lot it is nothing. We can't spank the children to discipline them. As the saying goes it starts at home.

that is so true it is your job to try to teach your children the right path... and there are so many parents out there doing that but it doesn't help to have the media and the system going against you...your so right it starts at home... but one thing that gets me is "my people" will say why is it people protray us a certian way well look at how we are protrayed in the media and we can't blame no body else but ourselves...we as a people need to come together and fix this problem cause it takes a village to raise a child

It does take a village and our villagers have abandon the children and fed into the media, society and the desire of wealth and fame. They have gone off the path of importance, they are looking for false glory, instead of everlasting life which comes in their children, grandchildren and great grands. It all starts with us taking responsibility for ourselves, having self respect, self awareness and not letting the desires fame/fortunes kill our true legacy.

Hip Hop Appreciation Week begins on May 14th 2007 and concludes on May 21st 2007. Hip Hop Appreciation Week began in 1998 as a time set aside every third week in May to acknowledge and appreciate the existence of Hip Hop itself. During this time (May 14th-21st 2007) the Hip Hop community refocuses itself through a collective reviewand update of its own history and core principles and elements. Principles- peace, love, unity and having fun. Elements- Breakin, Emceein, Graffiti Art, Deejayin, Beat Boxin, Street Fashion, Street Language, Street Knowledge and Street Entrepreneurialism. The idea is to celebrate Hip Hop itself.

and your so right because of the so called Gansta Rap that was produced on the west coast its given the pure Hip Hop a bad image.. Because Negativity sells and marketing is eating it up...but is it fair to prejudge each and every person who is apart of that subculture and put lables on them... how do we break box in which media has intrapped us in...
