Treasure Hunting

There is a rule here in the UK that hidden hoards of money belong to the crown and so not all things that are found can be kept by the finder. I think most treasure found though,belongs to the landowner on whose land you find it.
If I found treasure in my garden,I'm not sure I would go telling everyone though.
If it was an artefact,I would give it to the museum as a piece of old history sitting in my house would be wasted if only I could look at it.

I've never found anything like that and as mihimolly says here in the UK if we find something we're not allowed to keep it anyway but have to hand it in to the authorities. Personally I would be tempted to hold on to it but then I guess that's not much use if you can't sell it or whatever. It would depend what it was I suppose and how easy it would be to find a collector willing to pay money for it. It would be nice though!

I love history, so I'd probably keep a hoard for research.

When I was overseas, I was given permission to go on an archaeological dig and was allowed to keep what I found if it didn't meet the governments definition of a treasure. I can't say what exactly I had, but the items still fascinate me. Their value...more historical then sentimental, but one item has me guessing...Its a lead pendent with some writing. It didn't match the period we were digging, and was pretty ornate.

I've never found anything rare, but my husband has 2 rare books, he thinks. He cant really be sure. I told him to get them valued but a year later he's still thinking about it.

I used to dream of going up in my grandmas attic or moving into a new home and going to the attic to find one of those big trunks with all kinds of kewl things in it. LOL I think we all have a bit of "pirate" in us that would love to find a hidden treasure of some sort.
