A Different World... |
|
It amazes me to think how different things are these days compared to when I was growing up. My children are living in a completely different world than the one I lived in when I was their age.
The song 'A Different World' by Bucky Covington really illustrates some of the differences between now and then. Here are the lyrics, tell me what you think:
We were born to mothers who smoked and drank Our cribs were covered in lead based paint No child proof lids no seat belts in cars Rode bikes with no helmets and still here we are, still here we are We got daddy’s belt when we misbehaved Had three TV channels you got up to change No video games and no satellite All we had were friends and they were outside, playin’ outside
It was a different life When we were boys and girls Not just a different time It was a different world
School always started the same every day The pledge of allegiance then someone would pray Not every kid made the team when they tried We got disappointed and that was all right, we turned out all right
No bottled water, we drank from a garden hose And every Sunday, all the stores were closed
It was a different world

Either way, we have to learn to live with the changes. I think the reason this song has done so well is because we all can identify with it. Great post...

2. Heavensent53 (2615) | 3 years ago | Hello biwaski, That sounds like a good song. I grew up in those days, and I have thought about it. My children and grandchildren will really not know those simpler times. To me it seems like we were more relaxed, (but we were kids:) I remember my mother was thin, and had a tiny waist, with dresses that had a full skirt, gathered or pleated, and she always wore red lipstick. Long pants were uncommon, but she wear them gardening. We were either playing or working outside, we only went in the house for meals, after it got dark, or when Mama called. We even had an outside bathroom until I was about 10, as we lived in the country.

3. canjo13317 (303) | 3 years ago | i can relate. i remember when i was young and though about people who grew up without television, cars, stuff like that. i thought that i would never "outgrow" anything that was happening in my life. as i look back, i can remember the computer when it took up a whole room and when you programmed it and printed it the printout was little dots. you had to feed the paper in to rerun the program. kind of like a reel to reel tape player. you remember those, don't you? or 35mm movie projectors. now i sit here on my laptop. amazing. it really does make me wonder what the next generation will "outgrow". cool topic. thanks for the trip back in time.

I have been reflecting a lot this lately about the different childhoods and teenage years, my children, grandchildren, myself, my mothers and my grandmothers and indeed my great grandmothers have experienced.
Do you know I think WE had the best!
So much so that I am actually writing a Social History type of book for my Grand children and hopefully THEIR grandchildren to go alongside the Geneology CD that I am completing. I thought a social history would be far more interesting then a load of dusty crusty names and dates, and faces of people they have not got a clue about. I know I would love to have had that done for me. So as I said before on reflection and as its turning out, yep, WE GOT THE BEST!!!

6. TeresaK (8081) | 3 years ago | Except for the part about the mother who smoked and drank, I would say that pretty much summed up my life. And while I've tried to keep my children's lives as simple as possible, as well, it's not that easy when they think that they have to keep up with the rest of the world.

biwasaki (1045) | 3 years ago | It's hard for children to be children these days with all the new technology that is out. I live in the same neighborhood that I grew up in, and I remember the neighborhood being full of us kids playing outside. Now, I don't see any children outside and I know that there are lots of families in the area. It kind of makes me wonder what they are doing instead.

TeresaK (8081) | 3 years ago | When my three were young, there were times they thought that I was a mean mom, and they had no problem telling me so. LOL Especially in the summertime, I would tell them that they couldn't watch tv or play video games until they went outside and got some exercise, rode their bikes, climbed trees, or just ran around in the yard, for at least an hour. Most of the time they would start playing and get caught up in what they were doing, and be out there for hours...but the idea that I was MAKING them go out instead of letting them sit around and vegetate, just made me the meanest mother EVER. LOL

biwasaki (1045) | 3 years ago | *LoL* You're so mean to MAKE your kids go out and play. I think more parents should do that. It can't be healthy to let your child sit in front of the tv or play video games all day.

biwasaki (1045) | 3 years ago | I remember that too! No phone calls to set up play dates, just go outside and someone would be there. And you wouldn't have to worry about whether or not it was safe to be outside. I wish my kids could have that experience, but the times have changed so much since I was their age.

8. susieq223 (1976) | 3 years ago | You are so right. We could probably add about 50 more verses to that poem! I wonder, though, if all "older" people always kind of long for "the good old days" no matter when those days were? There are many things I do like about these days--the computer being one. (Well--I do have a love/hate relationship with my computer, but most of the time I enjoy it.) On the other hand, I am glad I am my age. I would not want to be young and just starting out now.

oneandonemakesix (24038) | 3 years ago | I can agree to that.
As cruel as kids were when I was a kid, its gotten worse and well.........needless to say kids today have all new fears....
Someone taking a weapon to school when I was akid was not one of them....you had the occasional kid who brought drugs to school....but it didn't happen often...
I watch some of the kids out behind where we live and well needless to say, Its sad to see how some of them taunt and tease others.
But truthfully sometimes I do long for the simpler life....
(but I do still want my bottled water;-P )

10. KissThis (2636) | 3 years ago | I miss the good old days. Life was simplier and you didn't have to worry as much. I would love to be able to take my children back to the good old days.
I remember doing most of those things. My son ran up to me today and asked if he could go inside to get a drink. I looked over at him and said " When I was your age we didn't go inside to get a drink. We would turn on the water hose and grab a drink." He looked at me as if I asked him to commit murder.
I sure do miss those good old days.
