do you believe in spanking your pet? |

| if your pet had done something wrong or bad, should you spank him/her? to teach him/her a lesson through spanking the pet? should we hurt them or just teach them through raising our voice? how do you discipline your pet? what type of owner are you? i have a friend and she has many dogs like I am. but last night when i went to her her house, i saw her yelling at her dog princess because she didn't poop at her toilet or potty location. my friend teaches her a lesson and she also spank her when the dog barked at her. i was just shocked because for me i don't think we should hurt our pets to teach them a lesson, we can some alternatives like raising our voice or saying no!!! hurting them won't do any good, it will make them scared at you or have the tendency to be traumatized by what you did. and that pet won't be that close to you anymore. she/he will back off some space. pets do have feelings too. that's why i don't believe we should spank our pets. what your opinion about this? | | | | | |

| | No, you should never use negative discipline on your pet. Never spank or yell. They are very sensitive. They learn from kindness and rewards. If people don't know how to train a dog, they can learn from a trainer or even buy a book. | | | | | | |

| | NO, I don't think that one should spank (aka hit) a pet! They learn in the wild from their parent who doesn't have the means to hit! They can easily equate hitting with being attacked and become mean and viscious. Besides, who wants an animal who only obeys out of fear rather than love and and a desire to please! | | | | | | |

| | yes, that's right. your pet obeys you only because of fear. i think it's wrong. | | | |

| | Maybe their parents in the wild can't hit them, but that doesn't mean the parents don't respond to their pups with a little violence. In the wild, canines of superior rank in the pack growl at the pups that misbehave, and if they don't correct they behavior they get attacked by the adult. If you've had several dogs you could observe this behavior. I often saw my older female dog "scolding" the pups, the mechanism that prevents pups from being seriously harmed it's that as soon as the pup "apologizes" (whining) the adult cease the attack inmediatly. If you do it correctly, a soft hit can be considered by the dog as a punishing bite from his/her superior, but to do that you first have to issue a verbal reprimand. Of course, nobody should never apply excessive force, the objetive is to reprimand the dog not traumatize it, hitting a dog repeatedly makes the dog anxious and fearful. There are some serious faults that can make an adult dog harm a pup: challenging the authority of a superior or trying to eat before their turn. For example, when my dog Keppler was a puppy, he tried to eat at the same time that my dog Clio, she is the alpha dog of the pack, so she warned him by growling. The next thing he did was bite the nose of Clio, that action earned him an attack... Clio bit his head breaking the skin (two little holes), Keppler inmediately started to scream and Clio left him in that same instant, the whole interaction couldn't have been more than a few seconds. He learned his lesson and later he was playing with her as if nothing had ever happened, and I assure you that since that time he never did that again. The bottom line is that I think that if we're going to have pets we should learn how they behave in the wild and try to make their experiences with us the closest to their natural behavior as we can. | | | |

| | An animal would not understabd such discipline as spanking. Dogs would understand a raised voice and maybe a smack on the nose, but a spanking is really strange. I had dogs for a while and they were very good, they knew when they had been bad and would go sit in a corner till i told them it was ok. | | | | | | |

| | my present dog is so playful and does not listen to whatever we say sometimes. we need to give some spankings. spankings will not damage a dog anyway, if given to them properly. since she has learned that a spanking hurts, she stops immediately and listens. she has learned her lesson well with that one spanking so far. | | | |

| | I agree. Dogs are smart, and they often learn from the first spanking. Now, if only children would do the same! | | | |

| | Every pets should be given equal respect from people just like we give respects to every human kind around. To discipline our pets, we should discipline them in love but not by in any ways of violence or negative disciplines, like what you have mentioned above, like spanking them. It's not the right way at all to discipline our pets, not at all because pets they may be but they also have emotions like human beings do. | | | | | | |

| | Okay so maybe i am a bad person but i hit my dogs. QUICK CALL THE POLICE! They are sensitive and they are family and we love them blah blah blah. But i swear satan has replicated himself in my two dogs. They are just over a year old and bull mastiff x great dane and getting huge! So i can consider them an exual member of the family. Lately barking is their favourite passtime and instead of getting an electroshock collar and being the worst pet owner in the world i do hit them. after 5 days of no sleep because your dog wont stop barking you get a little mad. Expecially when your neighbours just had a baby and it cant sleep. They have responded to it and now only bark when something is in the yard or someone is hanging around. They are good dogs and i love them but sometimes physical reinforcement is needed. | | | | | | |

| | As a matter of habit, we do not spank our pets. There are times though, when spanking gets called for. Pets know how to abuse us, too. They know that we love them too much and that, they can get off with some mischief at times. When they overdo doing the mischiefs, it is only proper that they get their spanking. My pets still come to me and love me even after getting their spanking. What is important is, we do not spank them as a matter of habit but, as a matter of necessity. if we do it only once in a month or two, i don't think it will do them much harm. Just make sure that the spanking hurts but not wound nor disable them in any way at all. | | | | | | |

| | I love my dog but sometimes whenever I'm losing control to him I admit that I spank him for him to learn a lesson. My dog grew up as a spoiled brat but after I gave him some punishment I make sure that I would pamper him with my love and full attention. As a result he learned something from his mistakes. | | | | | | |

| | It looks as though I'm about to be the first person to go against the grain here, and I hope I don't get chastised too harshly. I do believe in spanking a dog, but not to the point of being abusive. One responder said a smack on the nose would work; I disagree. I favor a smack on the buttocks; not hard, but just hard enough so they can "identify" this action as a form of discipline. And they respond to this. An old saying goes, "You can't teach an old dog new tricks." Well, one time, a roommate moved in his 15-year-old dog that his ex-wife had taken care of. This dog was apparently not housebroken, because she was constantly pooping indoors. One time, I called her into the den, pointed to her mess, and she started to "slink" away. I smacked her on the butt. She never did it again, but she wasn't traumatized of me. We were still affectionate, and she still begged whenever I ate (and I can't help but share). Another method of obedience training is to use short, abrupt noises that the dog can easily remember. Smacking your hand with a rolled-up newspaper, or shaking an aluminum can full of pennies or dried beans works quite well. In fact, these are the only methods besides spanking that will work on our dog. She is a spoiled, lap and furniture dog, who doesn't even care when we yell at her. The other methods work everytime, yet she still loves us. She eats with us, she wrestles with me, she rides in the car, she steals Cousin Rob's chair, bed, and pillow... :) With cats, it's another story. I'm afraid to hurt them, and they probably wouldn't listen, anyway. The only thing to do with them is to keep picking them up and removing them from wherever you don't want them to be, and hope they are obedient. This is how you housebreak them, and it mostly works with keeping them off certain furniture. Then, give them a scratching post/pad, and hope they don't shred your furniture! :P | | | | | | |

| | It's useless to spank a dog for pooping in the wrong place. They won't know what you mean. If you catch them in the act, you can just say NO firmly, and take them to their spot. When they go, praise them. They should get the idea then. No one should ever hit their dog, but a light swat every now and then to get their attention wouldn't hurt. | | | | | | |
