Are Microwaves Ovens Really Safe? Do You Use One? |

Are Microwaves Ovens Really Safe? Do You Use One? Did you do that microwaves don’t heat food from the inside out but from the outside in?With microwaves cooking from the outside in, sometimes people may get those cold spots in their food. These cold spots are perfect for bacteria to thrive in, bacteria like salmonella which can make you sick. There have been studies that have shown small outbreaks of food poisoning due to microwave use. This problem is occurring because the microwave users often ignore the recommendations for the food they are cooking. Like stirring and rotating their food and checking the temperature and making sure it is cooking evenly. Do you use a microwave? Have you ever gotten food poisoning from eating something cooked in the microwave? Do you always follow the recommendations on cooking your foods in the microwave?I have never gotten food poisoning from cooking food in a microwave before but I do usually follow the guidelines. A friend of mine sent me this article about “The Claim: Microwave Ovens Kill Bacteria in Food” here is the link if you want to read the article: http://www.nytimes.com/20...

1. PsychoDude (1968) | 3 years ago | I use a microwave quite often, but most I do in it is simply warm stuff up and pretty much nothing else so it's already cooked before. Asides from that I simply put it on warming up mode on most things, it's rare for it to still be cold inside then after it's done.

cherbe (2303) | 3 years ago | I use mine a lot for warming things up to but I do use it to make stuff as well. I always follow the directions for cooking it though at least I try to. Thanks for the post PsychoDude!

| ellysmile_b (51) | 3 years ago | Yes I agree. We also use our microwave only for warming food and popcorns (it's the fastest way). I love to use it for warming bread & choco chip cookies or donuts from the fridge. I don't think I will ever cook anything in a microwave. The stove and the oven is still the best for cooking food properly.

aj2006 (1266) | 3 years ago | I agree, microwave oven is the best for faster food preparation, those ready mixes kind of foods... It is still best to use stove for cooking dishes..

cherbe (2303) | 3 years ago | The stove and oven make the food taste much better and they always look a whole a lot better also. Microwave cooking doesn quite get the same results as the oven but it does work well as you guys stated for warming things up for making Popcorn lol.:) I appreciate the posts guys:)

2. carlaabt (3164) | 3 years ago | We pretty much only use our microwave to heat up leftovers, or to defrost meat. I don't like the way that stuff tastes most of the time when it's been cooked in the microwave.
My husband will sometimes heat up frozen things in the microwave, but I don't know if he follows the directions or not. If I'm heating something up for him or the baby, I always follow the directions, and check the temperature.

cherbe (2303) | 3 years ago | That's for the response carlaabt. I follow the direction and check the temperature to. I know what you mean about somethings just don't taste the same I have had that experience to ... something don't look as good either when done in the microwave. lol

3. Bev1986 (1172) | 3 years ago | I'm with the others... I pretty much only warm up food, I don't actually cook a meal in the microwave. Sometimes I'll do veggies in the microwave, but I never cook meat in it.
My MIL on the other hand, uses hers to cook a lot of food because she says she hates to heat up the kitchen on the stove or oven. I can understand that, but I just don't like the taste of some meats in the microwave...
| |
| |
cherbe (2303) | 3 years ago | Yes some meats taste really funny and look gross to lol... chicken is the worst. I prefer the oven to the microwave unless warming things up or defrosting but I will use the microwave if I have to. Thanks for the post.

4. Foxxee (2634) | 3 years ago | Raw food shouldn't be cooked in the microwave anyway.
I use the microwave a lot, but only to warm things up. I never cook raw stuff in it. I use the stove/oven for that.

cherbe (2303) | 3 years ago | Warming up is the best thing a microwave is good for. So far I haven't come across anyone who really cooks with it so that is pretty good. Thanks for the post Foxxee!

5. becuttieusa (4691) | 3 years ago | Hi sis. I have one in our house and i use it alot. Especially it fits my busy studying schedule. Microwave is always my first choice because it is so easy to use, pretty neat and fast. And i do hear that it is not good for our health somehow but it is my habit of using it. So i am trying to use oven more but oven always makes my house hotter, especially in these hot days. It is like crazy, sis.

cherbe (2303) | 3 years ago | I am totally with you on that Sis. The microwaves is much more faster then the oven and a whole lot cooler to use when it's hot out! Plus it's quick and easy to use with a lot less mess:) Thanks for the post becuttie and welcome back I miss you!

6. lordwarwizard (10401) | 3 years ago | I should think they are safe enough. I use them almost everyday to heat up food. Aren't we all going to die one day anyway? Don't think the effect will be significant enough to make a difference to our rate of decay.:P

cherbe (2303) | 3 years ago | That is so true!:D I love your response to this, I honestly wasn't excepting that answer, should of known someone like you would come out with that answer lol.

7. joyce423 (1216) | 3 years ago | We use microwave at home. I think it is safe as long as you know what are the precautions and how will you use it with safety. As far as I know just use microwavable containers while heating up your food. Don't use any foils or the same material when heating foods in your microwave. So far, I haven't heard nor experience any food poisoning from microwave.

cherbe (2303) | 3 years ago | I haven't seen any case and definitely haven't had that issue either. So far I don't think anyone here as ever experienced that problem microwaves. Thanks for the post Joyce423 I appreciated it.

8. misheleen73 (3135) | 3 years ago | I use the microwave for re-heating things or cooking a quick hot dog for the boys. I always follow heating directions if it's a frozen dinner, etc. But I really don't use those often. Just for heating things up normally. I think it's safe enough if you do what you are supposed to do.
| |
| |
cherbe (2303) | 3 years ago | I agree misheleen73! I use it mostly for reheating and dethawing things now. When I was in college I use it more because that was all I had lol but I never go food poisoning...isn't just commmon sense though to follow the directions? lol Thanks for the post.

9. Stiletto (3180) | 3 years ago | You know I resisted using a microwave oven for years because I didn't like the thought of them but I use it quite a lot now. It just saves time and often saves washing dishes too! There are some things I don't cook in it and still use my conventional oven - things like joints of meat, etc and I never use it to defrost frozen meat. I'm just not convinced it does it properly!
| |
| |
cherbe (2303) | 3 years ago | I have to agree with the saves on time and dishes. I have things I won't cook in them as well chicken is definiately one of them! I prefer to use it for warming things up with now. Thanks for the response.

10. oogie_boogie (326) | 3 years ago | I use a Microwave all the time. Its how I survive. I always follow the instructions carefully though and i wont stand near it whilst it is on. I have never got food poisoning from something I have cooked in the Microwave. I dont think that they are save as they give of harmful radiation. But i'm just to lazy to cook anything properly:P

| |
cherbe (2303) | 3 years ago | lol I love it oogie_boogie! At least your honest:) I don't think they're totally safe either but I don't think there is anything wrong with using them as long as we follow the instructions. Thanks for the post!
