Fascinating Bible Fact #22 |
| |
| The Earliest Biblical Texts Scholars pour over ancient texts to see what the books of the Bible originally said, but even the earliest manuscripts they have are copies of copies. Archaeologists keep digging to find earlier sources, closer in time to the actual writing. But papyrus crumbles; many ancient works have been lost, burned or buried. In 1979, alongside the Scottish Church in Jerusalem, excavators found two beautiful silver amulets. These date from about the time Jerusalem was overrun by the Babylonians in 587 B.C. What made this find so special was the words inscribed on the amulets: the priestly benediction known as the Aaronic Blessing, seen in Numbers 6:22-27. That makes these artifacts the earliest biblical texts in existence today. | | | | | |

| | Yes, of course, all Bible text we have today, dates from copies. But learning a little bit about the manner these copies were made, will convince us that the number of transcription errors is relatively low, and the numbre of sense changing errors is equal to nil. How do we know? For instance, from the Dead Sea rolls of Qumram. Before this very eminent archaeological discovery, most ancient Hebrew Bible resources dated from the 9th century C.E. Qumram rolls are dated between 250-150 B.C., about thousand years older. But the differences between these two resources are minimal. This, because of the very careful and much supervised work of the copyists: word count on each papyrus, destruction of any copy not 100% perfect, and the profound respect they showed in general for the Scriptures, including personal purification and prayer befor starting a new page or even phrase. The age of New Testament copies is very much closer to the time of their origin, so again, the possibility of substantial, sense-changing failure doesn't exist. Another fact that favors Scriptural fidelity, is the great number of copies in scholars' hands, compared to the number of copies existing of any other ancient text outstanding today. | | | | | | |
