Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band |
| |
| June 1st is the 40th anniversary of the release of the Beatles' classic "Sgt. Pepper" album (and no, that doesn't make me feel old at all :-) A lot of fans consider it to be their best album (it's 3rd on my personal list...after "Abbey Road" [as grand a collection of pop music as one could want, in my opinion] and "Revolver" and just ahead of "The White Album" and "Rubber Soul"...but that doesn't mean that it's not great, of course.) Which Beatles album means the most to you? And which individual Beatles single/track touches/moves/inspires you most? (the soaring, inspirational "Hey Jude" still gets me every time I hear it.) | | | | | |

| | For me it is a toss-up between Sgt. Pepper and Abbey Road. Best single.. that's more difficult to chose because their stuff was so unique back in the 60s. As a musician, I love the chord changes (from minor to major) in Strawberry Fields and then at the time I loved Eleanor Rigby - perhaps that has haunted me because I was around 15/16 and had fallen pretty hard for this local girl. I had this little pocket transistor radio (hi tech then LOL), that we used to tune into a pirate radio station here in the UK called Radio Caroline - they played a lot of Beatles stuff. Hey Jude is brilliant. I think it was Otis Reading who did a soul version of it back then, if not Otis Reading was it Wilson Picket. Memory of names are not my best talent. Instead of the Nah, nah, nah...etc in the middle 8, they used a brass section. No good, can't find a favourite.. I think practically every thing of theirs I heard I enjoyed and still do. | | | | | | |

| | Wilson Pickett had a chart hit with his cover of "Hey Jude". I've never heard Otis Redding do it but that would certainly have been incredibly cool (I'm not sure if he died before or after the song came out.) | | | |

| | Thanks for nudging my memory there, it was Wilson Picket - my memory on names and dates is really appaling - how's that for an ex-pro. musician! Mind you, for about 15 years of my life, all I did was listen to what was in the charts and usually pick it up "by ear" as the sheet music was not available until several weeks after a hit record came out, and as a band, it was no good us playing "yesterday's" music and I would often be playing something from a band I didn't know the name of! | | | |

| | My favorite Beatles album today still remains the Abbey Road album - although Sgt. Pepper is also outstanding. I was in 7th grade when Abbey Road came out in 1969. I remember the rumour floating around that Paul McCartney had died. Everyone studied the cover of the album to try and decipher some type of message to try and validate the rumour. The band had stopped making live concerts several years earlier and had limited their recordings to studio work, so many of us, then, didn't actually see the Beatles live. It makes me laugh today when people state that certain groups today are the best rock group of all-time. Such utter nonsense when one examines the sheer volume of works that the Beatles put out in the 6-7 year period back in the 60's that was their heyday. If anything, they are THE most influential group in rock history - bar none! | | | |

| | The Beatles certainly were unique. We had never heard anything like them before. Perhaps I'm getting old, but I can't seem to see what icons the kids of today are going to have. | | | |

| | I was born in 61 so l was to young to remember the albums and still have a hard time figuring out what song is on what album. My sister who is 9 years older then me had all the 45 that l use to listen to. I can't pick just one album l love them all. The song Norwegian Wood is one of my favorites because it was the first song l learned to play and sounds amazing on my psaltery dulcimer. I am still reading the "Beatles Anthology", I like to read it when l am alone.I Find that that book inspires me to draw or do something creative. That's why l never want to finish reading the book. | | | | | | |

| | I was 8 when the Beatles were on Ed Sullivan the first time and I still remember getting into the coolness of it all. My cousin...who was 13 at the time...bought me a copy of the 45 ("I Want to Hold Your Hand" on the "a" side, "I Saw Her Standing There" on the "b" side) and I played both sides over and over and played air guitar all the while. | | | |

| | I didn't start buying albums until the 70's...I always loved all kinds of music so I bought stacks and stacks of 45's so that I could enjoy a broad spectrum of artists...but when I did the first three I bought were all Beatles records: Sgt. Pepper and the two 2-disc greatest hits collections that were put out: 1962-1966 (with the red cover) and 1967-1970 (with the blue cover.) I did get A Hard Day's Night on DVD...that movie is still so much fun :-) | | | |

| | Oh! 45s. I had some But most of my vinyl was kid stuff and movie soundtracks. My parents had reel-to-reel tapes of Broadway, and stuff like Sinatra, Streisand and Robert Goulet embarrisingly enough. I wanted 45's so badly all my friends had them. I always wanted a little pink round 45 case that stacked all the 45s and had a handle through the center that locked the case.. like my friends. This was a Great !!discussion thanks-MK | | | |

| | As I was born in July 1967 I just missed out on this album, but I must admit its the only album I possess of The Beatles, as I am not a real fan of theirs. I must admit my favourite has do be Fool On The Hill and then Hey Jude, these are the two I have on my ipod! But I must admit when I was in primary school we did a show about the 1960's and I remember wearing all the flower power clothes and walking around to the tune of "All We Need Is Love". Oh what happy days!! | | | | | | |

| | Sgt. Pepper seems to the album that people who aren't really Beatles fans tend to have. Hey, we did that show when I was in the 6th grade, too..."All We Need is Love" with love beads, peace signs, and the whole routine (some of my fellow students were only reluctantly involved at first as they were more into Motown or the Rolling Stones but a wonderful time was had by all...especially the parents :-) | | | |

| | It's amazing how much wonderful, influential, unforgettable music those four guys put out together in such a relatively short period. | | | |

| | I grew up listening to the Beatles. My dad was and still is a massive massive fan. They are actually pretty cool and I can say that I know most of the words to most of the songs. There are quite a few songs that I do like. But I will always like 'Imagine'. | | | | | | |

| | Abbey is even stronger I think. Can't stop listening to that one, you'll play it more and like it more everytime you play it. It's amazing that they are still that popular, offcourse, their influence is just sooo big, but even than, can't believe there are beatle haters, you just gotta love them! | | | | | | |

| | Heya, My favourite album is Abbey Road I'd say..Most of the time that is. I really like Let it Be too. It really just depends on my mood. Sgt. Peppers is good too for a bit of fun. I like most of the beatles songs, Eleanor Rigby is one of my favourites and The End. When I was a child I loved Lucy in the sky with diamonds and She's Leaving home. There are too many to list really. I got into the beatles because my parents were into it so I suppose that makes me a second generation beatles lover, if such a thing exists? I wonder if my daughter will be able to appreciate it too when she is older? hopefully. she is only three now and loves just about any music, although I also like some heavy metal and shes not keen on that. fair enough. I suppose that when it comes to inspiring?? I like Lennon, Working class hero, mother.. Anyway, thanks for a discussion worth responding to, I find it really had to find anyhing to post to these days, Tanika. | | | | | | |

| | I was just 16 when Sgt. Pepper's was released. I can remember going to town with my friend to buy it as he had saved up enough money - he got more pocket money than me! We took it back to his house and we played the grooves off that shiny black disc! Now that the age is approaching me I quite like 'when I'm 65' as lots of the sentiments in that song apply to me and my wife! | | | | | | |
