I have to say I'm quite a houseproud person and I like people to respect my home when they come to visit. This involves taking off your shoes when you come in to any of the rooms such as the living room and bedrooms especially as my husband spent a small fortune on getting new carpets last year and went all out to buy expensive plush carpets so I could walk around barefoot - having been told by the doctor to be wary of injuring my feet as being diabetic this could lead to all sorts of serious infections. That scared me enough to make sure I vaccuum the carpetted rooms regularly. Now I don't know about you but I hate seeing people wearing shoes and putting their feet up on the sofa or on beds. I notice this a lot when watching films or TV shows and I can't understand why people would do something so unhygienic. If someone came into my home - I'm all for them making themselves at home and putting their feet up if so they wish but if they dare to do that with their shoes on, they've going to get the broom smacking them LOL!

How do YOU deal with visitors and shoes? Are you cool with people putting their shoes all over your furniture? Do you in fact wear your shoes and put your feet up on your sofa or bed, for example? How do you feel about going to someone's home and being asked to remove your shoes just inside the front door? This has been a real bug bear for me for a long time and I thought it was time I opened it up here to see what my fellow myLotters thought...

I've always removed my shoes before entering (or right in the foyer area after entering) a home. Even if the owner of the home says it's ok to keep my shoes on I end up taking my shoes off by habit. I've always been this way, in fact I think it's habit from upbringing by my parents. I believe it's a sign of respect toward the home your are a visitor in. I personally don't like when people keep their shoes on, whether it's in their own home but especially if it is in someone elses. I found myself annoyed when the furniture delivery guys and the cable guy kept their shoes/work boots on while walking through my white carpets when I first moved in (although from a work standpoint, I know they typically wouldn't remove their shoes).

Anyway, when I have company over, and I know they're coming over, I pull a few pairs of my own shoes out and lay them out just inside my door. This way, the hint is given to remove their shoes.

myLot reputation of 98/100. anonymili (2895)   ranked 3 out of 4,882 in debating  3 years ago

Thanks for your response. Good to know someone else thinks the same way. Sensible idea about keeping a few pairs by the door to give the hint. I actually tell people quite firmly that they need to remove their shoes before entering any of the rooms - have only really insisted on this since we got new carpetting last year.
I was also brought up like that and my parents have always even made workmen take off their shoes. They've always left a few pairs of slippers of differing sizes for people to put on if they don't want to walk about barefoot or with just socks on and in general I can't think of anyone who's ever had a problem with this.
I do hate it when I go to India though. You're expected to take off your shoes in people's homes and walk around barefoot BUT they generally don't have carpets so it's cold floors and as it's always so dusty (even though most people wash and clean their floors every day) your feet get VERY dirty and I hate putting on my shoes with such dirty feet after walking around barefoot on someone's dusty floor. When I'm on holiday out there, this might sound silly, but I tend to carry a pair of indoor slippers when visiting people so I can wear them - so far no one's ever minded LOL!

You have opened really a nice topic on health and habits. We put on shoes only for external travelling and this carries health and security to our feet. But when we arrive at our/ some-body's home, these shoes must be put off at a proper place kept for shoes. Otherwise it will carry infections through dusts and germs carried by shoes from external sources, beyond our knowledge! Like we all put off our shoes or chappals before entering to any temple, so also for home. Because in real view, home is the 'Prime Temple' of all irrespective of caste, religion and nationality. So we must regard it well and get shoes off while at home or visiting any person's home. Thanks for this nice topic.

Thanks for your nice response. Glad you like the topic. It's been on my mind for a while now. As you're in India pal, how do you deal with going to people's home and walking around barefoot and putting on your shoes with your own feet being somewhat dirty now? Whenever I go to Cal, I find the floors always get very dusty within hours of being cleaned in the morning and I can't spend the whole day walking around and washing my feet every time I put my shoes back on? I'm very curious as to how do you deal with that?

myLot reputation of 95/100. Mitraa (2127)   ranked 782 out of 4,882 in debating  3 years ago

I think, that much dust level is permissible for our health. Because those are in-home dusts. Some may be entering through our respiration also! But the main problem is the external dusts those carry many varieties of germs and virus. If these are well controlled, then wiping the floors with disinfectants regularly will reduce the germs level safely and no need to wash feet for home dusts. Thanks.

Thanks for coming back again with that response. That does make me feel somewhat better. As I've got older, I've become more into worrying about things like dust and germs and sometimes worry that I will end up being obsessed with these worries LOL!:)

I used to remove my shoes whenever i enter somebody's house.......The same is the practice in my house also....But I never used to say people to remove it before entering my home........But most of the guests or visitors used to remove the shoes before entering the home.......In India this is a custom.......

We will walk on the road with the shoes and we will stamp a lot of things.......so it is better to keep outside only...

I hate people keeping their legs on soffas or the cushions......

myLot reputation of 98/100. anonymili (2895)   ranked 3 out of 4,882 in debating  3 years ago

Thanks for your response. You see in the UK it is not generally customary to remove shoes when entering people's homes. I am Indian and have been brought up this way and because we spent a lot of money on our carpets we don't want them ruined with people traipsing in perhaps mud and chewing gum and all sorts. My main problem is that I see on so many TV shows like soaps, British, American and Australian soaps as a specific example, people walk in from outside the house and straight away they sit with their feet up on the sofa with their shoes on. I think that's really disgusting AND even worse when they show people doing it when they climb on their bed to watch TV. Very weird!

I never wear shoes in my own house, and when I go to the homes of close friends, I take my shoes off there too. It doesn't seem to be a common thing here in the UK though when strangers come into your home, but I think it would be a good thing, like in Japan or other countries that have this custom.

If I was to come to someone's home who like you, had a medical condition and required that all visitors take their shoes off, I would respect that and be happy to do it. Being obliging and supporting others is to show that you care.

If somebody came into my house smoking, I would have to ask them to put it out and I would certainly have to say something if they put shoes on my furniture. I would find that insulting, and showing no respect for my family.

myLot reputation of 98/100. anonymili (2895)   ranked 3 out of 4,882 in debating  3 years ago

Thanks for your response Derek. In general I wouldn't insist that people took off their shoes say in the living room if we hadn't bought such expensive carpet recently. Previously people used to traipse in mud which was bad enough but chewing gum really upsets me on shoes and then transferring onto carpets! My biggest issue is the wearing of shoes and putting feet up on beds or sofas, I just don't understand it. When I see shows like Eastenders or Coronation street or the Aussie soaps you see cast members coming in from shopping, throwing their bags down and hitching their feet up onto their sofas with their shoes on! I always cringe when I see that and the thing is I see it so often. I'm wondering if people like that really exist and if so, who are they? LOL!

myLot reputation of 99/100. derek_a (5152)   ranked 463 out of 4,882 in debating  3 years ago

I've not noticed it on that on the telly. Have to pay closer attention, but I'm usually doing my crossword when they are on.. LOL. Mud and chewing gum through your house? I couldn't put up with that! What are people like?

Only the other day I was watching some soap (don't recall which one) and an older married couple sank onto their bed for a cuddle both with their outside shoes on, I was immediately reminded of this discussion here and it made me chuckle that people are expected to believe that a mature couple would forget to remove their shoes! How weird! x

Well that will probably answer why younger people will leave their shoes on, if they are seeing in on TV.. I still haven't been looking out for it.. I forgot! LOL

you are not alone in this.
At home our rule always has been shoes off as soon as you enter and houseshoes or socks for everyone. I have carried that through when I had my first apartment on my own and now as I am married we have the same rule over here.
We have bought a nice set of guests shoes for them to use or if they dont want this, socks are fine. The family living on the ground floor has the same rule, when we visited them we also took off our shoes.
More than this, when I go to visit someone I always bring my house shoes with me out of respect for the one who cleans up there.

Another thing we two have in common, I am diabetic just like you.

Blessings,
book

Nice that you provide shoes/slippers for guests who visit, makes things much easier! I must say I'm surprised by how many people are saying they expect guests to remove their shoes when they visit their homes, it's good to know! Thanks for your response:)

The first thing I do as soon as I walk into the front door is take my shoes off, I hate wearing shoes in the house, although it's rented, I still see it as 'my home' I like to wear either slippers or sandals in doors, I would love to go around bare foot but what with the cats and my housemate's eczema and skin complaints I am frightened to. Trouble is he tends to leave his shoes all over the place, and boy does he have a collection

myLot reputation of 98/100. anonymili (2895)   ranked 3 out of 4,882 in debating  3 years ago

Slippers are absolutely fine to wear around the house as long as you're not wearing them outside - I won't even take the rubbish outside with my slippers on - the way I see it, as soon as you've stepped outside your home the street dirt and grime get on your shoes so my slippers are strictly for indoors only. Maybe you should get your housemate to read this discussion LOL - might give him a few hints:)

HELLO! I understand that you may need to keep your feet from being injured as I am a Practitioner of Alternative Medicine. It was very good and Loving of your husband to spend so much for your safety and comfort. Many cultures around the world take off their shoes as soon as they enter the front door, so you are not alone. Some countries like Japan have Tatami mats which serve like carpets. Other countries offer slippers for people who are uncomfortable being barefoot. Footwear in whatever form is never and should never be worn on the bed nor the sofa, that goes without saying and depends on their parental upbringing.
Visitors whether expected or not(as in the case of the occasional sibling, cousin), may be politely requested to take off their shoes as soon as they enter the front door and please lend them slippers! Another suggestion is to have some sort of place without carpets for parties and such. However for people with limited space such as apartments, either you hold your party elsewhere or require beforehand that they come as informal as possible, being sure to inform them that you would require them to wear slippers in your house. Please make sure you have more than enough pairs around and have lots of extra ones even if you know the number of guests coming. Lastly, I wouldn't mind being told to take off my shoes as soon as I enter the front door. Write again if you need more advice especially on your diabetic condition. God Bless.

myLot reputation of 98/100. anonymili (2895)   ranked 3 out of 4,882 in debating  3 years ago

Thanks so much for your lovely response. When the doctor first told me about my diabetes and having to be extra careful with my feet and not to walk around barefoot, I was quite upset and told her that my husband had just the previous month spent so much money on getting new carpets fitted just so I could walk around barefoot. She relented and said as long as I vaccuumed VERY often and took great care not to step on anything sharp it should be ok. As we have a 2 bedroom flat, we don't really invite more than a few people over at a time, we'll be buying a house in the next year or so and then we'll make more provisions for having spare slippers by the door for guests to use.

Thanks for your offer of advice, I might take you up on it one of these days:)

I take my shoes off in my own house and in other peoples. I think there are too many germs about and theres no need to carry them into your home all the time.

myLot reputation of 98/100. anonymili (2895)   ranked 3 out of 4,882 in debating  3 years ago

Thanks for your response, yes people tend to forget sometimes that germs are easily spread by shoes and even hands when opening doors which is why it is sensible to remove shoes indoors:)

A big cultural difference here as I live in Finland and here there would be no reason to even ask this. The shoes come off when you come inside. The same way you take your jacket off and hang it, you also take the shoes off.
As it's not the custom around here I would find it really weird if someone insisted on keeping their shoes on and would walk around the apartment with them.

Some people do wear 'indoor shoes' like sandals and slippers in their own homes around here but that's more an exception than the rule.

myLot reputation of 98/100. anonymili (2895)   ranked 3 out of 4,882 in debating  3 years ago

Ah I didn't know that it was common in Finland to remove shoes when you enter a house. It's interesting to find out about how people behave in other countries. If it is the norm to remove shoes in homes I can imagine it would be weird if someone refused to take theirs off! Maybe they have bad foot odour LOL! Thanks for your response:)

myLot reputation of 47/100. 00Ssk00 (190)   ranked 2,125 out of 4,882 in debating  3 years ago

I actually find it quite interesting that in a place where carpeted floors are more common people don't take their shoes off and here, where no one has carpeted floors at home we do take them off.

myLot reputation of 98/100. anonymili (2895)   ranked 3 out of 4,882 in debating  3 years ago

Yes, that is rather odd that people would walk in with shoes where there's carpet and remove their shoes when there is no carpet! I think I'd be more likely to keep my shoes on if it's cold and there is no carpet! x

Hi anonymili, it has never been an issue here in my country. This is because it is customary for us to take our shoes off when entering our house or friends house. But I wear slippers when I am doing my cooking in the kitchen or taking my bath.

myLot reputation of 98/100. anonymili (2895)   ranked 3 out of 4,882 in debating  3 years ago

Thanks for your reply Ellie hun. Yes I also wear my slippers in the corridor, kitchen and bathroom as we have wooden flooring in the corridor and marble effect tiles in the bathroom and kitchen. I wouldn't want to get my feet dirty on the tiles and then walk that dirt into the bedrooms or living room. Also as this is generally a cold country (we're famous for that here in the UK aren't we?) the floor is rather cold to walk on barefoot most of the year:)
