My dog Sarge, a 4 year old german shepherd, suffers severely from fungal infections in one of his ears. I take him to the vet, they test it, they tell me it's the same problem, I leave with a very small plastic bottle filled with some kind of medication, which lasts me approximately 2 weeks, and I have $175.00 less in my wallet. This wouldn't bother me if it worked!! He gets a little relief for about a month and then "bingo", it's back again. I've tried everything imaginable and nothing seems to be helping him :( Does anyone have the same problem with their German Shepherd? Is there anything that you've come across that works? I'm open to all suggestions.
Thanks for listening.

Here is some reading and sites that might help. Also gentle cleaning of your dogs ears on a regular basis will make him feel much better and help keep him infection free. Hope this info helps your furkid!

Me too. He looks miserable about 80% of the time. He shakes his head constantly. I clean his ears every 2nd day and bath him once a week...but it hasn't alleviated his discomfort. Thanks again for your help, it is greatly appreciated.

Pico is a cocker spaniel and they tend to have problems with ear infections. I used to clean her ears religously, but they still tended to flair up. Another dog owner told me that she puts about a tablespoon of active culture yogurt on her dog's food every day and it pretty much cut out the ear infections. Her dog is about the size of a German Sheperd, so that should be about the right dose (Pico gets a little less.) Ever since I've started Pico on this, her ears are beautiful. She's had the occasional yeast infection when she otherwise gets stressed (for instance, after major surgery and taking antibiotics.) When she does get a yeast infection, I give her a product called Probios that I get at the feed store that has good bacteria that helps fight the infection (it says it's for stomach problems, but it works for ears too - also you can give the sheep or horse version if that is all they have, it's just a sizing issue). (Or WalMart sometimes sells the Probios treats, but they don't work as quickly.)

Also, my vet likes to switch between 2 different medications for the yeast/fungus. You might ask your vet about that and also about giving you the treatment without the visit, since it's pretty clear what's needed. My vet usually just sniffs at the ear discharge rather than testing too - which also saves money!

Thanks so much ! I've heard about the yogurt before, but was told to actually rub it on the affected area. But I like the sound of adding it to his food. I'll definately stop at the supermarket on the way home tonight and get some. Hopefully that will help. Thanks again :)

Yes, this makes sense because probiotics fight fungus. If your dog was on antibiotics that could be the cause of the ear infection. When my cats get ear problems, I dilute about 5 drops of tea tree oil in 5mL of water, then mix that with some steeped chamomile and wash their ears with it. I use a cotton ball to clean the ears, and a dropper to drop some down into the ear. Tea tree oil is a great anti-fungal, but it's very strong, so if you decide to try it, start with a weak solution.

Does your dog go swimming or get wet frequently? Fungal infections are usually caused by dampness in the ear that doesn't dry adequately. Its more common in drop ear breeds so I'm surprised your dog has this problem.

Try keeping the ears dry everyday with an ear powder. You can get it at Petco. You aren't going to be able to treat the infection with ear powder, but you can help prevent it from starting back up again. If your dog is a swimmer or sticks his head in the gutter or whatever, might want to nip that in the bud.

Frequent ear cleaning by dabbing a cotton ball with some hydrogen peroxide and cleaning out the pinna (dont reach in there with your finger!) may also help. But remember to keep the ears DRY.

Thanks iiartisanii. He doesn't go swimming a lot but I have noticed when I clean his ears that they are quite moist. I'm in Australia so I'm not sure if we have a Petco here. But I will certainly have a look at our local pet store for some ear powder. I do have some hydrogen peroxide, my daughter used it when she had her ears pierced. I didn't know that I could also use this on Sarge. I will definately give it a try. Thanks so much for your help.

I absolutely promise you that tea tree oil will cure his fungal infection. You can buy it in a drug store such as walgreens. Buy the best quality oil you can, it is one thing where cheap is "cheap" dab some oil on a cotton wool ball and wipe out the inside of his ears, if there is any broken skin, dilute the oil with some water (tea tree oil is the only oil that is water dispersible)

The key with tea tree oil is that you must be persistant. It is a broad spectrum antibacterial and antifungal, but it works gently but very effectively.

And wouldn't you know it, I have some in the bathroom cupboard. I hadn't even thought of trying that. Thanks so much Krisss.

lol i was going to post about tea tree as well. not tried it in dogs but i have on plants and it seems to fix fungal things there!

julieandpico (57)   ranked 501 out of 7,860 in dogs  5 years ago

That is a good idea! I bathe Pico with tea tree oil soap. Cockers get skin warts as they age and several that I thought were secreting turned out to actually have fungus or yeast living in the nooks and crannies of the wart and washing them with the tea tree oil soap takes care of it. Since secreting warts need to be removed, this is a great boon!

Also, I forgot to mention, I trim all the hair on the inside of Pico's ears and that helps keep the area dry. My vet recommends wiping the ears out with rubbing alcohol because it is drying.

Get some tea tree oil. Dilute a little with water and apply to his ear. Keep applying everyday until it is cleared up. My daughters got ringworm in their hair years ago. I kept going to the doctor and he gave us medicine that would start clearing it up, but I would come right back. Their hair was falling out. Then I learned about tea tree oil. I put it in their hair two times a day and within about a week it was completely cleared up. I don't see why it would harm your pet. Don't let your dog lick it. Look it up on the internet or as your vet if you can use it. I keep tea tree oil in my house for any fungal infections that come about.

Thanks for your advice zoesden. Sarge has also lost the hair around his ear due to this infection.

trbrown22 (62)  5 years ago

Please keep in mind when using essential oils on animals that their sense of smell is much more powerful than humans and a little goes a long way.

I personally use tea tree oil for many things. Cleaning, odor eliminator, infections, etc.

Hope this helps.

I think we have a consensus on tee tree oil. :) I've started Sarge on this and I'll monitor him closely to see how he goes. I've diluted some tee tree oil and washed his ears with it, then dried them a little. Left him awhile and then squirted a small amount into his ear (diluted) and rubbed it around. Lots of moans and groans from Sarge, but not pain groans, like the groans that say, "Yes, I have an itch, scratch it, there! There! Yes!!" lol Thanks everyone!!!!
