Yoga can be done right at home with a few simple instructions and tools. Just like with anything, start out by learning about yoga, reading about the poses and especially paying attention to the breathing aspect of yoga. When you become aware of your breath, then you can control it -- no matter where you are. You can practice your breathing at work, while working at the computer. You can practice your breathing standing in line at the grocery store or at the bank. You have the power to practice your breathing anywhere in your world. Think about it. Stop! Be aware of how you are breathing. Is it short and shallow? Rapid? Try slowing it down and breathe all the way down from your belly. Take four long, deep breaths and exhale slowly each time. Be sure your belly expands on each inhale, and expel all your breath when you exhale. It should feel very different from your usual breathing. Try a pose each day at home, while practicing your deep breathing, right in the comfort of your living room. I also like to practice outside on my terrace so I can see the ocean.” Use your imagination to create a space like that to practice yoga in your home. Ever wonder what it would be like to come home to a place that is so peaceful, so calming that just by entering this space, your troubles throughout the day would just melt away? You have the power to make it happen. Whether you are a beginner or master at yoga, you can find space at home to set up your practice. It just takes a little imagination and a few simple pieces of equipment. Shaw says, “A beginner in yoga will need just a yoga mat, a towel and perhaps a block.” All these items may be purchased for less than $40 and are easy to find, either in discount stores or online. With all the different branches of yoga that one can strive to, you can get started right at home with Shaw's book, Yogafit. It has basic poses and information that anyone can read and execute. If you are looking to improve your stress levels, your flexibility and get into shape, remember: Less is more. Go to Yoga Journal to try out one pose a day or every other day until you feel comfortable with your knowledge. When you have fun trying a new fitness routine, odds are in your favor that it will become a lifelong activity. You can also do a little yoga each day as part of your normal routine. While standing in line, focus on your breathing and strike a mountain pose. For instance, while I am waiting for my physical education students to arrive, I stand in a tree pose until they arrive.
