Earlier, I was watching the Rachel Ray show, and her guest, Julie Chen was talking about a unique method she uses to save old sweaters and make them look new.

She uses a disposable razor to shave off the "pills" and imperfections that sweaters aquire after being washed and dried repeatedly. You know the ones I'm talking about. Just wanted to pass this tip along, just in case anyone missed the show.

Years ago, I tried this technique on yard sale baby clothes and it worked like a charm. My daughter ended up wearing the yard sale finds more than the expensive clothing.

Please feel free to share your frugal tips for repairing and restoring clothes to save money. Or, any frugal tip you might have.

Wow, thanks for sharing this tip! I have never heard that one before, but it's a really good idea. I will definitely keep this in mind for my old sweaters this winter to see if I can fix any of them up a bit!

That's a neat tip! I'm definitely going to try that when I'm getting my winter clothes out later this year. I like it cos' it's easy and doesn't cost any money to fix it...except maybe getting the razor which is something I already have lying around the house. Thanks for the tip.

I usually take scissors after the pills on my sweaters, but using a razor on them instead sounds like it'd probably be a lot easier. I haven't been to a yard sale in years, so it just might be time to start taking a look now that the weather's staying nice!

hey!! thanks for the "pills" tip. We don't get Rachel Ray show here.. it's only either Oprah or Ellen. As for baby clothes, i still have to stick with buying brand new ones. no yard sales here either.:(

I have used this method, too, and it works great. I could not see spending the money on the electric sweater shavers when they first came out and thought I would give a disposable razor a try, and it worked.

hm... using a razor to remove the "pills" is a good idea!
I usually use a scissors and end up cutting a hole in the clothing!

But doing that will eventually thin out the clothes with each subsequent wash!
And if the "pill" removal is not even throughout the clothe, you end up having some really weird looking "designs" when wearing them, cos some parts will be thinner than others. This is especially apparent in darker wool clothing.
