own? I rarely buy any house plants. I don't claim to have a green thumb but I do fairly well with starting new plants from shoots. My friends and family and I have recently been trading shoots. I started out with my first plant (photo attached) a spider plant. That was about two years ago. I then gave my cousin one of the babies and she gave me some of her Ivy plant. I did buy one plant an Easter cactus. I have an aloe and now my latest is the prayer plant. I think I am becoming addicted to house plants. My problem is I don't have that much room in my home for too many. And in the summer some of them can go outside. But I am afraid come winter I will not have the room inside for them as I plan on getting more and if I have to I will buy them. LOL! Does any one know of any plants that grow real slow and do not take up much room?

I like getting shoots and rooting them in water because, once they're potted it's as though I have a piece of a story or a piece of the person who gave it to me. I like caring for my plants and thinking of that. I like recounting the stories with people who visit and ask about them, too.

I have been rooting my own, I find some kind of satisfaction out of it much more than just buying a plant which anyone can do. Besides, plants are expensive. I do have a Christmas cactus I bought, but it's not doing that well, and I have an African Violet that someone gave me as a gift, which I do need to transplant.

wandering jew - there are several different varieties but this is my favorite.
I used to like plants when I lived in my parents house but since I have been married I can't have them because of my cats. So many houseplants are poisonious for animals. I like the plants called wandering Jew It is very pretty with its purplish leaves. I also had aloe vera plants also. I really liked your prayer plant. Thanks for sharing.

I do a combination of both. Occassionally my Mother gives me plants or cuttings. She has lavenders & rosemary bushes that come up on their own in her garden. I will sometimes buy plants though. At the moment I am very keen to buy about three more winter flowering shrubs. I don't have indoor house plants, as there is too much watering involved, & not enough space.

I think the Cacti family is a good one for you if you want slow growers. I am in the same boat as you and have more plants than I have window sills for! I should probably be glad the rubber tree bit the dust!

I have a small cactus garden in pots in my kitchen. One of them my husband dug up and brought to me as a gift from one of his jobsites. One of his crewmates got in on the act and sent me some others that he got from a different jobsite. I think it was very sweet of him. I bought a bunch from a store (they didnt look very good) I repotted them and now they are so pretty.I dont have any other kind of plants as i would probley kill the poor things.

I have several pathos plants that all have been started from the mother plant. I think they ar my favorite to grow, because they are nearly impossible to kill. :) I also have a spider plant that I bought at a garage sale for $.25. I also have an arrowhead plant that somehow manages to survive, even though I forget to water it. (it's hiding in a corner, behind a lot of craft supplies) My oldest plant is a bengamin ficus that I purchased in 1989 (my first year of college!) It was only 10 inches tall, and I had it in a 4 inch pot. Now, almost 20 years later, it's 3 1/2 feet tall, and in a 20" pot. It's moved with me about 6 or 7 times, and I haven't managed to kill it yet. (almost, once, it spent the night outside on a frosty evening!) Houseplants can be addictive, but, I look at it this way. As long as I have ceiling space to put a hanging pot, there is always room for another plant. LOL!!!!!

It depends on the type of plant. I usually buy those that are difficult to propagate. Some plants are easy to take cuttings from, such as the spider plant for example. I think Prayer plants are beautiful although I don't have one at present. I think philodendrons grow quite slow. There are many varieties.

I love growing plants from shoots and seeds but I have brought some from nurseries as well. Most cacti are slow growers and zygots as well. Zygots and cacti dont require much water either and like sunny positions. I have a couple in a aquarium and they grow very slowly and look wonderful. not much of a green thumb either but do just fine.

I met the same problems as you. My friend sent me a couple of plant named pineapple. They are not grow faster than other plants. But over 1 year's later, one of them has grown so big made up almost half of my balcony. but I like the long green leaves and I am looking forward to their blooming. I also have three different kinds of spider plants. My cactus come from shoots, which will just grow upward and slowly, no need to take more care about it. The small room for my plants is not enough.but It doesn't matter considering the balcony full of my favorite plants. It will be terrific for me.
