Professional driver on closed course?  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 99/100. diecaster (391) 5 years ago

You have probably seen the fine print on the screen when a car ad is on TV. "Professional driver on closed course. Do not attempt." Ok, I understand if they show the car skidding or ripping through a turn, or even a truck in off-road terrain or stunts like in the Toyota truck ads. But most ads show normal driving on pretty country roads or city streets. What's to not attempt? Is there some legal reason for this disclaimer to be on all ads? Every vehicle I have owned I have attempted what the ad says to not attempt. Any thoughts?

I have been thinking about this Discussion for awhile, diecaster, and I can only come to one conclusion, besides the obvious liablity issues.

I suspect that my wife has secretly gotten a second job as a professional driver for auto commercials. If you have ever ridden anywhere with my wife driving, you would know that no sane person should ever, EVER, attempt such a thing. I think that if I was to look closely at the drivers in these commercials, I would see my wife driving with a look of insane glee on her face. I think that in the name of humanity, the automobile manufacturers are trying to warn the world about my wife's driving, and to get the heck out of her way if they see her coming.

Of course, I only offer one humble opinion.

Now I know who has been the driving mentor of my 19 year old daughter. It is now obvious that your wife has taken my daughter under her wing. My darling offspring's face, upon putting the vehicle in gear, reflects a transformation from a level headed college student to a wild eyed operator of what should be a stock car at a figure eight race. This Jekyl/Hyde change approaches the physical talent level referenced in another discussion. Would you be so kind as to ask your wife to tell my daughter that it acceptable, for example, to apply the braking system of a vehicle further away from, say, a Stop sign, than 6.5 feet?

God protect us.

I would ask my wife to tell your daughter that, diecaster, except that she wouldn't understand what I was saying as she typically doesn't apply the brakes until she is a foot away from another object. I think that she must do this to conserve the brake pads. Consider yourself blessed that your daughter is so far out when she uses the brakes.

And yes, I agree with your sentiments, 'God help us. God help us all.'

Some of the new ads are ace
You know, the ones with the cars skidding to a halt at the very edge of a roof of a sky scraper
Try that my friend
I am scared of heights, and I wouldnt do it
One day,the making of these ads will kill someone
Unless the stunt driver is Evil Knevil(spelling)
Do you think he would consider coming out of retirement
These old posts you did are great

Alas poor Evel Knievel (this is the correct spelling) died this past November 30th at the age of 69.

Thanks for the comment blitz on my old posts!

I believe it is done at the request of the traffic engineers. As you said, the ads show NORMAL driving on pretty country roads or city streets. Therein lies the problem. In order to remain employed, the engineers must make traffic. If you go about your driving in a normal way, i.e. actually going from point A to point B WITHOUT unnecessary braking, unusually slow speed and not crashing into at least ONE object, you create no traffic, thus they have no career. So PLEASE! Do not attempt!
