Yard sale "drifters"  email this discussion to a friend?

Last weekend at my yard sale, we had a few "drifters" that stuck around for quite some time. They didn't buy anything, but commented about several of our items and talked to me and other shoppers.

The first "drifter" was a lady who was out walking as soon as we started setting up around 6am. We only had a few boxes out and she was standing around talking to me as I tried to organize. She wasn't in the way or anything, but it was kind of odd. She commented on just about everything I was taking out. She left for a few hours and then came back again--this time she talked to customers and bought a few books.

Later, another lady came walking, sweating profusely. She talked to us about how her car's air conditioning doesn't work, how she lives on the edge of town by a factory where she works. Then she asked us about our experiences as students at the college here, and somehow got off on a tangent about math classes and how she used her math class experience to make decisions regarding investing.

We had nothing to say, but kindly listened with small interjections.

She didn't look at many of our things, just at what was around us. When she was done talking about how investments work (I admitted I knew nothing about them), she just glanced at a few things and then walked back to her car. It's almost as if she just came to chat.

Do you get strange characters at your yard sales? Have you ever had to ask someone to leave?

hello nerdytina, well i haven't got an experience like yours having drifters during yard sales. they usually talk to me only when they are very interested in an item that i'm selling. or when i offer an item and briefly explain an item to a person. although your experience is quite interesting, sometimes you just meet extraordinary people in an unexpected way :).

Well, I had several conversations with customers--we talked about the items and also talked about moving (as this was a moving sale), about college, and several other things. We met many nice people that day, but mixed in with the crowd were the more unusual ones that stood out.

I think that most yard sales attract at least a few people who are just browsing, and don't buy anything. I know that I have often gone to yard sales to look to see if anything strikes my fancy, and I don't always end up buying anything. But I am assuredly not chatty while I'm there. :)

We had lots of people that just came and browsed, some of them just stuck out a lot more than others. I've never been much of a chatter, so maybe that's why it struck me as so odd.

The second lady "drifter" seriously went into a 10-15 minute talk about investing and I had nothing to contribute to the conversation. It was kind of interesting how she just kept at it.

I didn't mind though, really, I liked all the traffic we had!

Actually, yes. When I had my yard sale in May a man came as we were setting up and commented on where we were placing our *stuff*. It seems he was in the business for years and knows how to sell things. He actually put together a clothing rack for my friend..lol. He bought a small stool that I handpainted years ago. I think he did it because he felt sorry for me ;) He stayed for about an hour.

Later I saw him drive by again.....hmmm

We also had an Olympic gymnastics champion, at least that's who my neighbor said he was. It seems he owns a gymnastic club for kids in our town.

Yes, people who have been in the "business" or know how to sell things love to give advice. I told a co-worker that I was having a yard sale, and he (who has worked in retail for years) started giving me all this unwanted advice until I stopped him.

Maybe that guy was driving by again to see if any of his advice was going well? haha

I have never had this happen, but I suppose some people get lonely and just want someone to talk to. I suppose that if it happened I would probably talk to them for a while, as long as they weren't in the way. If they were, I guess I would have to excuse myself and try to go on about my business.
