At What Point Do You Decide That Your New Car Is No Longer New? |
|
Whether your car is previously owned, brand new, or personally hand built when you acquired it, at one point do you consider it to no longer be new?
Is it when you get the first parking lot ding? The first time you spill a milkshake in it? Is it after a passage of time? How much time? The first time it's rained upon? When the 'new car smell' is gone?
What is it for you that makes you decide that your new car is no longer new?

1. lotterylover (4765) | 3 years ago | When it keeps dying on me or won't start. My truck is 18teen years old. It has dings, the back bumper slightly bent down, rusty spots all over it, the gear shift knob comes off but it starts in the morning.

Transdisc (18489) | 3 years ago | It sounds like you've got a lot of miles yet to go with your truck, lotterylover. One of my friends uses a piece of thin, galvanized pipe for his gear shift lever. It has an old white porcelin doorknob for the shift knob. His truck is 27 years old and still going strong.

2. sigma77 (4282) | 3 years ago | When I take delivery. The resale prices sinks like a stone and the car loses value from day one. Pretending it is still new a few months later is futile. At what point would it not realistically still be new? That is up for debate. Say you own the vehicle 3 years from now and you still consider it new because the last car you had was 13 years old when it finally bit the dust. If I did get a hand built car, I probably wouldn't want to drive it at all and put it in mothballs...lol.
| |
| |
|
|
Transdisc (18489) | 3 years ago | Yes, once we take delivery the value goes down dramatically. Still, I wondered how different people viewed their vehicle as 'new.' Does it just sneak up on us, or is there a moment in time when someone says, "This car is no longer new."
I happen to have a 14 year old car and a 1 year old car, so I do appreciate your example.:)

3. jimbo45 (9407) | 3 years ago | Well,I change my car often. So I never have them long enough to say they are old. Buying and selling cars helps keep the wolf from the door,so I am always on the look out for cars. The one I bought two weeks ago yesterday, will be gone soon,as I was offered double what I paid for it. I will be driving around in a new old Jaguar xj6 for the next couple of weeks. The one I am working on will be finished and ready to drive.I now have another which can be ready in a week,as it didnt need much,so I may well keep the one I am almost finished, and sell the other.Or I may sell them both, plus the one I bought 2 weeks ago and buy something else. What ever comes along. I may buy a jeep, since I saw your one,I have been looking, and for one in red,lol

Transdisc (18489) | 3 years ago | WTF are you still doing here? I thought you were gone? I saw that you made it to the 3rd row of the first page, so I thought you were gone, riding the roads in your new old Jaguar XJ6.
Is your Jag a convertible? What color is it?

jimbo45 (9407) | 3 years ago | When I logged on,I lost points. I was meaning to go through all my stuff and catch up replying to all responses I have had from every post.I want to go with them all done, every single one. British racing green, not quite ready, but I think its sold,so could the car I bought 2 weeks ago be.I like making money. You will have to put up with me for a few days yet. I know already even getting a short time on here is gonna be hard, thats why I an doing no new posts. Its wouldnt be fair to do that, and not be able to reply to people.

5. oneandonemakesix (24038) | 3 years ago | I've never owned a 'new car', so its not new to us the first time we have to sink a huge amount in repairs.
And with used cars that usually comes within the first 6monts to a year.
We will have the van we are paying on now, paid off in the fall, and then we need to save to buy a second car...this 1 car is killing us, and I truly hate it...but on my husband's salary we can't afford much more, and we just need a cheap little commuter car....anyting not a stick and that will pass inspection....
But I will say this, I will NEVER buy a ford again.

Transdisc (18489) | 3 years ago | The first repair is a good indicator that the car is no longer new, oneandonemakesix. I had a car for 4 days once when it had to be taken in for repairs. It had 743 miles on it and had to be towed in. It ceased to be new for me at that point. Good example.

Transdisc (18489) | 3 years ago | What do you mean you cut off the roof, polachicago? Do you have a convertible, or did you make a convertible? How did you cut off the roof?
| |
|
|
polachicago (7865) | 3 years ago | ha, ha...I did...long story... I used to have porche and my porche get stolen.... So I took my old car and I cut the roof...not myself, I asked car builder to do it....it is fantastic, but needs to be in garage for bad weather... People are asking me what the brand of my car....is I say...”Atlantis"
| |
|
|
herrbaggs (732) | 3 years ago | When I was in college I put a small ford v8 in a crossly and cut the roof off, Nobody mistook it for a porche but they did recognise it as an idiot mobile which was obvious when I was driving it.

7. SirHorus (122) | 3 years ago | My car would never be considered new because as soon as I drive it off the dealer's lot, it would be used. The value of the car would go down so much just because I drove it a few feet from where it had been sitting. This is why I always buy used cars.
| |
| |
|
|
Transdisc (18489) | 3 years ago | And at what point does your new used car become old, SirHorus?
| |
|
|
SirHorus (122) | 3 years ago | My new, used car would get old when I drive it off the nearest cliff when the power steering goes out or the brakes go out.

9. mummymo (11642) | 3 years ago | I can't remember a time that I ever had a car that felt new! Don't want sympathy - my cars have character and that is much better than being new! They all have their own quirks and personalities! xxx
| |
| |
|
|
Transdisc (18489) | 3 years ago | No sympathy here, mummymo. Will you be taking your cars with character on holiday, or will you travel by other means? Also, when is launch date (so that I can be prepared to go into mourning in your absence.)

mummymo (11642) | 3 years ago | My rosie is off the road right now as I am unable to drive still but we are taking my partners car Magic (so called cos it can fly, well that is what the kids think, it is really called magic cos it is amazing it still goes!) with us! We leave Saturday morning - still haven't even thought of packing yet! lol I promise to take the laptop and will get on if I can! lol

10. mamacathie (1510) | 3 years ago | Well, Transdisc, I had never thought of it. Now you have me thinking. We just got a new Dodge pickup. Hmmm, you have got me to thinking really hard. I really don't know. We had a new Durango and someone hit me but I still considered it new. I really cannot answer your question but you really got me to thinking. LOL I guess after a few months it wouldn't be new any more. Well, I'll just say six months because I cannot figure out when I won't think my truck is new.
