The love story behind Taj Mahal  |

 Not much is known about Mumtaz Mahal except that she was a woman of legendary beauty and virtue, who had a very deep and loving marriage with Shah Jahan. Even during her lifetime, poets would extol her beauty, gracefulness and compassion. Mumtaz Mahal was Shah Jahan's trusted companion, travelling with him all over the Mughal empire. He trusted her so far that he even gave her his imperial seal, the Muhr Uzah. She was a big influence on him, apparently often intervening on behalf of the poor and destitute. But she also enjoyed watching elephant and combat fights performed for the court.
Together they had fourteen children, seven of whom died at birth or at a very young age. Mumtaz Mahal died during childbirth, while accompanying Shah Jahan during a war campaign against the Lodi lords in the Deccan. Legend has it that on her deathbed, her last wish to the emperor was for a symbol or a monument to their love. She also asked her husband not to marry anyone. Inconsolable, the emperor promised immediately. Apparently after her death, Shah Jahan went into secluded mourning for a year. When he appeared again his hair had turned white, his back was bent and his face worn. He kept his promise and built her tomb, the Taj Mahal, in Agra. It took more than 20 years to finish it.
Today, the Taj Mahal stands as the ultimate monument to love, and an homage to her beauty and life.
This is the reason why Taj Mahal is called The Symbol of Love engraved in Stone.

I would love to visit the Taj Mahal. I read this morning in the papers that it is finally going to be given a really good clean because all the traffic fumes have discoloured it.

| 2. jayanth10 (35) | 3 years ago |  A little known fact was that he was also planning to build an exact replica of taj mahal in black across the river on the other bank as his tomb, but he was jailed before he could by his youngest son who killed all his brothers to ascend the throne. His son thought that his father has wasted enough of the countrys money on taj mahal and couldnt let his waste anymore.

Taj Mahal is famous because the marble used is translucent. and the white marble has coloured jewels and stones embedded in them. The britishers when they ruled India made away with all the jewels and the stones have been pried out by many vandals and it is really very sad to look at inside the tomb. | |

Taj Mahal means "Crown Palace" and is in fact the most well preserved and architecturally beautiful tomb in the world. It is best described by the English poet, Sir Edwin Arnold, as "Not a piece of architecture, as other buildings are, but the proud passions of an emperor?s love wrought in living stones." It is a celebration of woman built in marble and that?s the way to appreciate it.
