Yes, week should not be encouraged to become lazy but weak must do little to show that they are trying their level best to avoid being dependent on others.

Ayn Rand philosophical novel has captured my imagination, and her wonderful, larger-than-life characters my heart. It is well-written, fast-paced, and with enough twists to rival a mystery novel to keep us reading.
Even though it is categorized as a work of fiction, Atlas Shrugged is really a book showcasing Ayn Rand's Objectivism's philosophy. A critique of the communism belief, it espouses the virtues of a pure capitalistic society and the dangers of a culture where the weak smooches on the abilities and strengths of the few. It puts on the perdestal the ego, not as false pride, but an honest assessment of one's one abilities. My favorite is the famous speech about money, disagreeing with the popular belief that money is the root of all evils.
To truly savor the power of her writing, I recommend that everyone should read Atlas Shrugged and not be content of what other people say about the book without experiencing it firsthand.

Once I was done with it, I continued on to read "The Fountainhead", "We the Living" and "Anthem." What truely amazes me is that Rand was writing in a foreign language. She is originally from Communist Russia and came to the US seeking a better life. I find "Atlas Shrugged" to be a brilliant book, and yes I do think that mankind as a whole functions best under the objectivist philosophies. However, the problem with Objectivism is that it goes entirely against Christianity. Not in practice but in the matters of the heart. Objectivisim teaches that there should be no handouts, or leg ups. You get what you work for and no more. There would be no gifts, no welfare, no social security, no public education. NOTHING would be free. In a world full of healthy people this would be fine. But how do you implement an objectivist philosophy in a society that includes parapeligics, children with downs syndrom, car accidents leaving people in comas for years. All three of those examples would be dead without the charity of others or the free programs from the state. It is a very touchy subject to argue, because on one hand you know that selfishness is the root of all brilliant accomplishments. Even charity is often done for selfish reasons, even if they are only to make the charitable feel good. On the other hand, in a society that demands and encourages selfishness, there is no room for the teachings of our current world religions.

dbhattji (1812) | 3 years ago | I have also read all of Ayan Rand's books and been very confused, on the one hand I like expertise to grow, on the other hand I believe in charity and helping the weak. I think she had to be very assertive to drive the point home - exaggeration is required in novels at least - and in her case it was her reaction to her country's political state. I am very impressed by your dissection of the whole subject.

krishachaos (163) | 3 years ago | I agree with you that it is a very difficult subject for a person with a heart to digest. After you read her works you find yourself thinking that Objectivism is the one and only way for us to run our goverment... and you'll feel that way until you realize just how many people out there truely depend on the charity of others. I agree that in order for her to make the statement that she was trying to make, she needed to take an extreme stand. Her extremist stance worked. When you read the book you are forced to stop and think about it. You can't help but ponder over how a world ruled by objectivism would be better than the one we are currently in. However like I said in my previous post.. there are too many people who would be left out in the cold. Now if you are completely heartless, you can justify it as the next step in evolution. Saying that those who cannot work and cannot provide for themselves should be left to suffer and die, meaning that they would not reproduce and then eventually many of the genetic diseases would disappear from our gene pool. It makes sense scientifically, however in matters of the heart, I could not stand aside as a child with no parents starved to death. It is a perplexing dilemma, and it is put to us as only an extremist could. She was brilliant in her writing, and what she has to say should bear pondering over.
