Building a Home | | Has anyone had experience with building a home, or at least thought about it? Its amazing how much time, work, and money need to go into it. First you find the land, then you get septic tests done, then in my case I will have to drill a water well. All of this can cost thousands and thousands of dollars and I wouldn't have laid a brick yet. I've been saving for two years now with a considerable amount saved but I won't even have enough to start building. For me if everything goes right, I will buy the land, get my tests done, drill a well, along with having a loan to cover what I can't afford. Then I will start saving again and someday in the future build my home.

We are glad we didn't wait. This was years ago and have since sold it as my husband got transferred. We are now debating on buying land for future building when we move back to Oregon.

| | 2. mesmerized (755) | 3 years ago | i have experienced building a house. but it's not for me.. it's this project called "habitat for humanity" hundreds of volunteers would come to this place. anybody can join. the materials are sometimes donated. it was really fun. first, we had to till the land. spread gravel on the ground, then even it out. then we would prepare the metal frame of the house. it is quite easy because the metals are already pre-cut. we just had to follow the numbers that were written on each piece. then we used blind rivets to put them all together. the frame was quite light, i think it was made from aluminum, so it was not hard to carry around. after that, we used cement boards for the walls. we put it all together by screw. (i didn't experience any of the roof part because i think it was only for boys) after that, the most exciting part, painting the house.
it was very fulfilling because the houses would go to the less fortunate.
good luck on your future home=)
