Can you call the police on a barking dog? |
| |
| Two different tenants in my apt. building leave their dogs home all day. They leave their windows open and the dogs home alone all day. They bark furiously at mailmen, neighbors, workmen, pool service people, delivery personnel anybody that come near the front gate or walks into the complex. This is constant, shrill barking. I work from home and am heartrily sick of the noise. it serves no purpose and I tune out the noise after a while, so it can't alarm them to danger. Can i call the police for this? I know noise standards for tickets and nisances are changing. | | | | | |

| | Most definitely. If the dogs are being a nuisance, you can call and report them. After so many calls, the owners will get ticketed and will probably try and find a way to quiet the dogs. I would suggest, however, speaking to your neighbor and letting them know about the problem first. You never know, they could be unaware of the problem. Also. just a question for you...you say you work from home? What do you do? | | | | | | |

| | I would call animal control in your city and ask for advice. I live in Pueblo, Colorado. There is an ordinance here that if a dog barks non-stop for 10 minutes, or off and on for around 15 minutes (Sorry, I can't remember the exact time for that one), that they are considered a disturbance. Second, it seems rather cruel to leave a dog cooped up in an apartment all day while at work. Where do they go to the bathroom? I have large dogs and I know they can't hold theirs all day. What would happen to these animals during an emergency? | | | | | | |

| | well you can call the police on a barking dog but the question should be will the police do anything if you call I say no because the police have to many problems to deal with then to take care of a barking dog they would only take care of it if it was out of controll and if a lot of neighbors complained about it then I think they would have no choice to tell the owner to leave the dog inside. | | | | | | |

| | I would call your landlord and then look up the non-emergency number for your area. There could be some problem there. Maybe the tenants are not properly taking care of the dogs. Either way there is no need for a dog to bark all day and therefore some officials may need to get involved. | | | | | | |

| | I'm pretty sure that I remember seeing a topic relating to barking dogs and someone stated that in certain states, an owner can be charged if there are so many barks within a certain time period. I can imagine that this would get very annoying, enough to give you a headache even. There are ways of controling a dogs barking I'm pretty sure, so it wouldn't hurt to check out the laws in your area. | | | | | | |

| | Yes, you can call the police. At least where I live you can. I can't remember what the complaint is called but it happened to my mother-in-law. The neighbor next door works nights and my M-I-L's german sheppard is very loud. It is a very annoying noise but I do disagree with how the neighbor went about it. First you should always be decent enough to knock on the door and explain your situation to the dog owner, then if it persists, have the police come out. Be prepared though because you will be required to go to court. | | | | | | |

| | Actually, I dont think many apartments owners allow dogs. I would start with talking to the neighbors about the situation. In my opinion an apartment building is not the place to keep dogs. I guess I get that from my dad. As a child I grew up in a house with a pretty good sized yard. My dad would not let us kids have a dog because he grew up in the country and said a dog needs a place to run. He didnt have the heart to keep a dog on a chain when outside as the local law required. That is in a way off the subject, but really, an apartment building is not a good place for dogs to grow up. Perhaps they could find someone to care for the dogs away from the apartment building while they are at work. That way the dogs would be away and also get a little love and attention instead of being cooped up all day. Yea, I deffinitely think a talk with the owners first with a couple of suggestions would be wise. Do the dogs bark much when the owners are home? Maybe they are mostly just unhappy about being alone. | | | | | | |

| | In our city, you can't unless it's a barking dog at night. California has a noise law. It really depends on which state you are in I guess. Good luck | | | | | | |

| | You can, but don't expect tp get prompt action if you are in a large city. This kind of thing is pretty low on the police priority list. Ask your neighbors, mail deliverer and others affected to call police also. There is strength in numbers. You might also call your local humane society or SPCA. | | | | | | |
