Writing Short Stories

I hope I have the gift to make short stories, but I feel im just a frustrated writer and Im just good with imagination and not capable of translating it words.

Think of short stories as a joke, in that they have to be snappy and above all, have a punch line. I suppose the official title for that would be the 'denouement' or shock ending.
That's what you should hang the whole story on, and what should be in you mind before you put pen to paper. A novel can develop with almost a life of its own as you write but the short story needs different thought processes.
I wrote one this way and it won 3rd prize in an international sci-fi short story competition.

A short story that won the Toronto Star Short Story Contest two years ago was actually an exerpt from a novel the guy was writing. There was enough of a story in that one scene to make it a full story in and of itself.

I wrote what I considered to be a young adult short story. I had my daughter and her friend read it, and I read it to my reading group. Everyone wanted more. I emailed an author in the family questioning this. She said that if you love a character enough in a short story you might want to take them and put them into a novel, which is exactly what she did recently.

Personally, I never thought I would be able to write short stories because as a storyteller my stories are long. But I took a short story workshop and have been writing quite a few. In the workshop we were given short stories to read and one in fact was quite long. Short stories have to be concise with no flourishy words or descriptive sentences. You just tell the story. It is easier to write the story long and then cut out than it is to write the story short and add to it.

Writing prompts are a great way to get ideas for short stories.
