Taking Aim At Starbucks |
| |
| I should have posted this one instead as my 500th discussion. My other one is tanking This is from a column I wrote recently in my newspaper. It's called "Taking Aim at Starbucks." That and a quarter will buy you a cup of coffee. Remember that old saying? That saying started off with the cup of coffee costing you a dime, but then was updated due to inflation. If you were to say that today, you’d have to say something like: “That and four bucks will buy you an iced mocha frappucinno grande.” It is being reported that Starbucks announced recently that it plans to raise prices of its lattes, cappuccinos, drip coffee and other drinks 5 cents, or an average 1.9 percent. I’ve got to hand it to these guys; the folks at Starbucks have elevated the whole marketing Three Card Monte trick to an art form. You walk into any Starbucks and you see this grand, or using the Starbucks vernacular, “grande” menu behind the counter that offers this wide assortment of beverages both hot and cold. You take a look at their menu and then the whole rocket scientist set up they have going on behind the counter where five associates work maniacally to prepare your chosen beverage just the way you like it, and you can see why Starbucks chose to bump their prices a nickel. These creations are hard work. I can save Starbucks a slew of money here, and save y’all that extra nickel for a cup of Joe. I can certainly save them money on their marketing costs, particularly in the new menus that will appear in the kajillion or so Starbucks located on every street corner in America and beyond. I could put their entire menu on a simple business card to fit easily in the palm of your hand. It would read like this: Coffee and milk, price: a nickel more than last week. Sizes: Big. Take a look at the different products offered by Starbucks. They have lattes, cappuccinos, coffee, iced mocha frappuccinos, mocha cappuccinos… I could go on all day. What you see there is basically coffee and milk hot, coffee and milk hot, and coffee and milk cold, and lastly, coffee-flavored coffee and milk frozen. The mocha cappuccino is basically Arabic coffee-flavored Italian coffee and milk. I looked it up. Mocha in the dictionary means a rich Arabic coffee. How many of you thought mocha meant chocolate? Here’s a more specific breakdown of Starbucks treats. You can Google this if you want to see that I’m not making this up. Café au’ lait – that’s coffee and milk; the milk is steamed and you get half coffee and half milk. Cappuccino – milk and coffee with foam; pretty much you get a shot of really strong coffee or espresso and about a quart of steamed milk. I call this coffee flavored milk. You can get the foam if you want it. Latte – coffee and milk again; it’s espresso with steamed milk and foamed sans sugar. Didn’t I just say cappuccino was espresso and steamed milk? I asked and I stand corrected. Cappuccinos are espresso with steamed milk, foam and sugar. So if I add a teaspoon of sugar into my latte I don’t have a latte anymore I have a cappuccino, right? I’m getting confused. Macchiato – coffee and milk but with a squirt or two of vanilla for your trouble. Americano – espresso diluted with water so it tastes like regular coffee. Isn’t espresso diluted with water regular coffee anyway? Oh yeah, you can add milk if you want. Mocha – see above first, but it’s on the menu. Mocha is just coffee, but they throw that chocolate in there to confuse you, and milk. Espresso – just espresso. It’s really, really strong coffee and you can buy a shot of it for about four bucks. If you’re really brave, you can order a double. Espresso is just that coffee that’s been sitting around in the bottom of your pot for about three or four days. Yes, it will put hair on your chest. Espresso Macchiato – this is a shot of espresso dropped into foamed milk, just the foam not the milk. Still, what do you have? Coffee and milk. Espresso Con Panna – this is a shot of espresso dropped into a pile of whipped cream, and what is whipped cream class? Milk. What is espresso? Coffee. Again, coffee and milk. And now Starbucks wants to charge a nickel more for all of this? You know? We should charge them a nickel just for the trouble of trying to decipher their menu. That and a quarter will buy you a cup of coffee. Do you know what you can get for a quarter at Starbucks? Laughed at.

| | I couldn't agree more. You couldn't pay ME to go into a Starbucks. I worked for them for a year and couldn't take the crud and overpricing any more. Their coffee is really quite bad. | | | | | | |

| | Espresso tastes strong, but actually has 1/3 the caffiene that regular coffee has. The fact is, it's been overheated and burnt. Their drip coffee is also overcooked, in my opinion. I developed parallel recipes for all of their drinks for use at home with good coffee. We have several local coffee houses where I live (in addition to two Starbucks) that are fantastic. They are called Ravenheart. They use only organic, free-trade coffee and it's roasted to perfection. They also have an atmosphere that Starbucks can't begin to copy. | | | |

| | Here's one if you're looking for a straight jolt of caffeine...have you ever just sucked on coffee grounds? My brother in law did Desert Storm in 91 and he said to keep alert in the field, he sucked on coffee grounds much like you'd dip snuff. | | | |

| | I have often wondered about that. Thanks for that very important info. I bet the beans would be even easier or more palatable, but the caffeine might be less absorbable. I sometimes think I get my caffeine fix just standing in the coffee aisle in the store. | | | |

| | I have onlyy tasted starbucks coffee once at a military hospital. It was the most horrible coffee I have ever tasted. It was so strong that the spoon was very slow reaching for the side after I let go of it after stiring in the sugar. When I tried to drink it, it took the polish off mty toenails. Even McDonald's old stale coffee is better than that stuff. | | | | | | |

| | Starbucks is the bi-product of the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta when European visitors complained to local restaurants that our coffee tasted weak and had the consistency of mud water. I think it was the French who complained. Leave it to the French to mess up a good thing. | | | |

| | God save the world from people that are easily duped. Since I don't like coffee and milk I am spared all the confusion. Give me any kind of coffee you want as long as there is no milk in it and a cup of ice and I'm good to go thank you very much. I had Starbucks coffee once, it was when I went to Pennsylvania for a wedding. Stopped on the way home to get a cup so I would stay awake driving. No problem I don't think my eyes closed for a week. | | | | | | |

| | Yep..that stuff is great for peeling away old paint. You know though...I take a cup of Starbucks coffee and I add it to my barbecue sauce recipe. I call the BBQ sauce Blackjack's Special...and the Starbucks gives it a little kick and turns it a deep brick red. | | | |

| | Excellent article! :) I don't drink coffee, so I do not understand the addiction that people have to certain coffee establishments. Here in Canada, it's Tim Horton's. I still don't "get it". Sure, I enjoy a french vanilla cappuccino a couple of times each YEAR from there, but that's about it. I can certainly go without... especially at the prices they charge. YIKES! | | | | | | |

| | Well down here they have a Starbucks on every street corner, damn near. In fact...there's a place in Houston Texas, that has a Starbucks just across the street from another Starbucks. I call that place the end of the universe. The benefit I can see for having two Starbucks on the same street corner is for Alzheimer's patients who have gone into the one Starbucks, gotten fleeced for a cup of Joe...then cross the street, see the other Starbucks and say, "Hey, let's go get us a cup of coffee." | | | |

| | If you're in Canada, you HAVE to try the "Second Cup". Far superior to Tim Horton's or Starbucks (even Air Canada uses second cup on their flights!). It's not so much the place, but caffiene is more addictive than nicotine. I was addicted for over 30 years before I finally put up with the severe physical withdrawal. | | | |

| | I think Mocha is a chocolate flavored coffee or cappuccino. I used to buy those International brand instant coffees and Mocha was one of the flavors.. yummy. I took my family out to Starbucks and the three of us had what we wanted and a little cookie or munchy thing with a funny name, and I spent over $20 for the 3 of us. | | | | | | |

| | That is really amazing when you see it all listed the way you have done it. I guess my frugal Scottish nature kicks in as I have never bought even one cup of their cheapest coffee. I have had one freebie from Kroger's grocery store while waiting on my deli order to be completed (they have a Starbucks inside the store) and it was not very good so now I know for sure I would never buy a cup of coffee from them. | | | | | | |

| | My friends and I would go to starbucks to catch up with each other's lives and generally have a good time. We probably stay there a minimum of four hours talking about anything and everything. We may have overstayed but hey, we paid a damn frappuccino each, we get to stay as long as we want! LOL! And its a good thing we don't see each other that often, otherwise, being the frugal person that I am, I would have to bring my own coffee! But you got it right, how come starbucks has the nerve to increase their prices when in fact all they are serving is coffee laced with cream in its many variatiions? | | | | | | |

| | I have never been to starbucks, I can't see paying that much for a cup of joe. I prefer to make coffee at home, I can buy a huge can of the stuff on sale for $5.99, and if I want a treat, I can drive to the convenience store and get a french vanilla cappucino for 84 cents. | | | | | | |

| | You know, I have it really easy if I ever go into a Starbucks, because I do NOT want coffee....I hate coffee, I hate the taste of coffee, and have gotten to the point i hate the smell of coffee to boot.... So if I go in Starbucks, which I can not remember the last time I did, it was to order one of their hot chocolates, which I found too rich and threw half of it away.....now does that make sense. Hmmmmm but I do have to say I really did like your article and I really did laugh at your final paragraph, >That and a quarter will buy you a cup of coffee, Do you. Do you know what you can get for a quarter at Starbucks? Lauged at.< You know what? I did laugh, I am still chuckling at it... Mooch | | | | | | |
