Jimi's version of Star Spangled Banner |
| |
| Does anyone else think that Jimi's version of Star Spangled Banner is misunderstood? When Jimi was interviewed by Dick Cavett, Jimi told him he thought it was 'beautiful'. A lot of people seem to think it was a protest against the Vietnam war. I don't think that was the case. I don't think it was a big political statement, I think he was just playing a tune he liked. (The song Machine Gun from the album 'Band Of Gypsys' was a different story. That WAS a song against war.) On another note, has anyone heard the studio version of Star Spangled Banner? It's on the 'Experience' box set. Personally I think it's far superior to the live version. | | | | | |

| | Jimi's biggest strength was that when he played live, he was sharing his soul with the audience. There was nothing hatefilled towards the U.S. in any of those notes, bends or hammers. There was just a guy who loved his country, hated some of the things she was doing, and put it all down on a fretboard and strings. | | | | | | |

| | I agree on this one. It was a gut feeling performance guided by his emotions. Even if he discarded that point later on. Jimi Hendrix was often found to have contradictory actions in his life. | | | |

| | Hi crispeater, I'm thinking I have heard the second version you are referring to, but we don't have it, I've heard it on the radio, I think. Anyway, my brains getting older :) can't remember where I've heard it. I don't particularly believe his version was in protest of the war, I think it's like you said, that was his minds interpretation of beautiful music. | | | | | | |

| | I think it was just another interpretation of a song many people have done. Look at the cover Boston did, it wasn't "traditional." I think that people judged it because he was highly against the war and such. I love it, its rock 'n' roll at its finest. | | | | | | |

| | That´s a really good question crispeater, I remember seeing the D. Cavett show on a video I had years ago from Jimi and yes indeed I remember him saing "I thought it was beautiful", also I think Cavett just asked him stupid questions he was only on that show because of his popularity at that time, I think Jimi confronted Cavett in a very cool way, he was quite humourous messing with Cavett. I´m not really sure about if it´s a political statement of him and if it´s a protest against the war. But in that tune I hear his love for music, the love of being in a moment of sharing his feelings to his audience in his very own way and also I hear the dive bombs sounding like dropping bombs, and you feel his struggle. I agree with you about the Machine Gun tune and his agressive improvisations in it, yes this is really about protesting. I must say I haven´t heared the studio version of Star Spangled Banner, so I guess I have to get to listen that one. Anyway good topic crispeater bye | | | | | | |

| | well back then some of these artists were almost treated as "extra terrestrials" and the cancer of culture. hendrix was polite and pleasant when he was interviewed. it was hard to get him angry. the talk shoes were just preview shoes for what was to come in america..! and the hosts played around a lot with their guests, especially the rock bands, bob dylan was good at handling lousy treatment by these talk show hosts. when he got done with them, they knew they were insulted. aristocratic, society and big government did everything they could to stamp out these bands and their followers ,but they only got stronger. and that's some of the reasons for the sensorship of everything in america today...the government/big society had a real problem staying in control. all over the country people were telling them to go to hell and also protesting their war,it was fueled by the bands and the and the people who followed these bands,the(so-called-drug-culture) and it was working...! society did everything they could to stop it. and look at america today even the off spring of presidents are users. so much for the lying thieves running(raping the common man) america today. | | | |
