"Take me on a trip upon your magic swirling ship..."  email this discussion to a friend?

"...My senses have been stripped, my hands can't feel to grip.
My toes too numb to step, wait only for my boot heels to be wanderin`"

In case you're wondering, that's a verse from Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man". I think those words are beautiful and I get choked up anytime I listen to that song. No one writes songs about anything as cool as a "magic swirling ship" anymore.
You can read the rest of the songs lyrics here if you like - http://www.bobdylan.com/songs/tambourine.html

What do you think of Bob Dylan's lyrics? I think he was, and still is, a genius at writing lyrics. What's your favourite Bob Dylan song and what does it mean to you?

Hi crispeater, I always really liked "Mr Tambourine man"...
And there's one called "The Times They Are A Changin' "
That is the one I think of, when I think of Bob Dylan, his unique voice comes through with it. You have to understand, I grew up in those times, so I understood it more.
YOU grew up in the wrong "time zone" I think it's great you love these artists & songs though:) Take care.

myLot reputation of 99/100. crispeater (1457)  5 years ago

Yeah, The Times They Are A Changin` is a great song too. I was actually playing that on guitar just a couple of hours ago :)
You're right, I did grow up in the wrong time. I grew up in the 70's and 80's. There was a few good musicians around, but nowhere near as many as in the 60's.

myLot reputation of 99/100. crispeater (1457)  5 years ago

I just noticed "to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free" is too long a tag :(

Being a teenager in the 60's had it's drawbacks though, It was a good time and dreadful, the war (I didn't know ANYONE who didn't have or know some young man in the service--- too many never returned.) It sticks with you your whole life-- even my husband, a Veteran of it.
The protests, the rebellion, equal rights, the hippies, ALL played a major part of my maturity. I like to think it did make me more openminded, instead of the other way.
The music was awesome though, many truths and speaking of rights...

myLot reputation of 99/100. crispeater (1457)  5 years ago

There's a lot of wars going on now too. Not as many artists speak out about it though. I wonder what the difference is between the 60's and now, and why musicians and artists seemed to speak out more in the 60's?

myLot reputation of 100/100. Heavensent53 (2615)  5 years ago

REBELLION. Now days you have to be "politically correct"
My opinion:)

myLot reputation of 99/100. crispeater (1457)  5 years ago

I think you're right. The most rebellious 'mainstream' musicians today are probably The Dixie Chicks, which is kind of sad (no offence to The Dixie Chicks :) )

we dont have as many people speaking out against the status quo because well the mainstream media follows the corporate music scene. I mean we hear more about justin timberlay (knowingly spelled wrong) than we do about musicians that make a difference and actually write their own lyrics. I grew up in the 90s and sure we had bands like rage Against the Machine etc, but the radio always played stuff by more mainstream artists ie spice girls etc. In the 60s though demographics were different most of the population was younger than 35 and was impacted greatly by Vietnam etc Right now we have Iraq and celebrities seem to dominate the scene more than they use to.

on a side note, I like a lot of older band that are before my time but the ones since are more into what sells rather than musicianship and speaking about something tangable that marks the time.

i thought the birds wrote that song ..i will have to find out...

i was reading the other posts and the comments...you didn't grow up at the wrong time..you are just who you are,but your ability to see some of the real truths about government vs., the people is pretty good.

i am not sure why these artists are not protesting this war...it grieves me,they are still my heroes..we did manage to cause a lot of commotion, back then and we did impeech a president(but the other thieves let him go)..

we did expose a lot of white collar crime and it's running rampant again with bush in office...it just shows you how thieves in power, corrupts absolutely...

our government/big business have been raping the tax base(the american tax payers) for decades now, along with the never ending rising cost of goods and services, while they are getting richer than ever..!

i remember stories of how the older people would talk about the titanic being torpedoed and that the aristocrats on it,deserved what they got..!

i would like to see the aristocrats get together somewhere and see them get it again..!

and by the way...(woody gutherie) was 1 of bob dylans role models...he sang out against the big companies during the great depression, when government/big business were starving the tax base(tax paying people)back then...!

the music and the artists did seem to be 1 of a kind..they were incredible times..(good/bad)i remember when they closed down the new york highway, because so many people were leaving their cars right there to walk to woodstock..it was awesome...the government was going to bring in the militia, but decided not to...and that scene was a real black eye for the government who were trying desperatly to stamp out the the "peace" hippies as a cancer of society, and when the concert was a hit,the government backed off real fast.

back then too, they drafted you,and i remember so many people on tv burning their draft cards in protest of the war and i know people who went to canada to escape..!

they were really lousy times back then, but we did expose them and we need so much more of this today,things...the greed is so bad again,it's killing the common american family base...we are the customer base for all business..including government...so it's about time they start treating us better with better wages and benefits, after all our kids will work in their companies...!!

we are the future, these companies can't run without us,the government can't either..!

sorry about running off on that tangent, but those days were so much more deeply involved than just great music...they sure were different..!

but todays music is being sensored again, just like they tried to do it in the 60's,but today the big companies have learned from us, how we broke free from their control and they are using better tactics to keep the creative artists down...they only promote complacent music, benign thoughts and melodies...things that won't stir up the hive...!

they don't like free thinkers,(artists who have a cause)because they stir up the masses and cause disruption to their big wheels of profit..!

well any way...we need dylan and all the rest of the heroes who are still alive to come out and start this revolution all over again..!

this government/big business are way out of hand again..!

power to the people..!

I think he is the greatest song writer who has ever lived. He completely changed the way people think about the popular song and how songs are written. every song of his makes me think of the world. It is unbellieveable that song that he wrote in the early part of his career still have rellevance today. I am glad to say that i have been to see him perform live it was a very surreal experience. My fave bob dylan song is tangled up in blue just makes me think yea love is like that sometimes and i can relate to the experience of loosing a girl then having her back then loosing her again and then wanting to go and get her again. I love to play that song.

myLot reputation of 99/100. crispeater (1457)  5 years ago

Tangled Up In Blue is another great song, I agree. I saw him play live last year and I was disappointed that he didn't play that and a lot of my other favourite songs.

I have been a Bob freak ever since I can remember.
I have cupboards full of his stuff, and trying to pick one song out is really difficult.
I can only say that because he is a poet, and the greatest poet of the last 2 hundred years, then all his lyrics are good.
Perhaps the best of the lot is A hard Rains Gonna Fall,or maybe Blowin in the Wind,

myLot reputation of 99/100. crispeater (1457)  5 years ago

Yeah, A Hard Rains A Gonna Fall is a great song. Even without the music, the words stand up by themselves as great poetry.

Hi Guys,Just wanted to say as a life long Dylanite my favourite song is "It's Alright Ma"! Bob once said of his hero, Woodie Guthrie, that Woodie wrote songs you could live your life by. Well I think Dylan achieves this with Its Alright Ma, i'm only Dyin', those lyrics are amazing, full of Dylan idioms. A close second is Hard Rain, i'd have to agree with you on that one Crispeater. I also used to agree with you about Dylan playing live these days, that he rarely plays the hits anymore but i have now changed my mind, i'm glad he's still crankin' out the tunes. I heard a comment the other day about the Rolling Stones that was very funny, it said "they are their own tribute band!!! Nobody could accuse Bob of that, he has the ability to constantly re-invent himself and personally i love his new Blues sound, alot of his past songs are irrelevant now, they were penned for a different era(don't get me wrong, i love everything Dylan has ever done with the possible exception of "Empire Burleque"). Let's face it, the times they are'a changin'

I totally agree, he's such a genius! Mr. Tambourine Man is one of my faves. Another one is "Shelter from the Storm"...

"Suddenly I turned around, and she was standing there
With silver bracelets on her wrists and flowers in her hair,
She walked up to me so gracefully and took my crown of thorns,
'Come in,' she said, 'I'll give ya shelter from the storm.'"
