Question about potty training BOYS.... email this discussion to a friend?

I have a 2 year old that I'm potty training now. When I started, I did it with him sitting down to pee. Now, he's really getting the hang of it. I wonder if there is a way now for me to transition to him doing it standing up. He doesn't seem to understand the concept. I've had his Daddy show him but he still doesn't do it unless sitting down. Should I just leave it as it is until he is older? Or is there a method I can try? Any suggestions?

have him pee at cheerios?? I've heard that works. It okay for him to sit down for now. It's just up to you and what effort you would want to put into it. It might be more comfortable for him right now. The only thing I would NOT recomend is that you push the subject because this could lead to regression in all parts of potty training and he might go back to doing it in his pants. You might also want to make sure he completely is 100% potty trained just because it might confuse him and cause you more problems. Good luck with it.

No, I don't want to push him. I just want to introduce the idea to him and let him know he can do it standing up as well and not just sitting down. Will definitely try the Cheerios thing. I've heard of it before but never tried it.

Maybe get him his own small stool to stand on to go. You might combine the stool with the cheerio idea.

Is there a grandpa or uncle that could take him to the men's room someplace like church or the library? Or a trusted family friend? Maybe if he sees all the other 'big guys' doing it, he'll feel better about it.

He does have a step stool. And his Dad has demonstrated it many times. But he'll just stand on his step stool and do nothing. But as soon as he sits down, he will pee. So, it's like he's holding it till he sits down.

I put a cereal in the toilet and my son was distraught over the whole idea.
My son is 3-1/2 and still goes back and forth from sitting to standng. I think if sitting works then just go with that but you might have to show him how to pee on a tree or something standing up just in case he really has to go and there are no bathrooms around.
I thought my husband would have been the one potty training since we had a boy first but I ended up beign the one since I was home with him.
Good luck!

That's how it is for me as well. Hubby (who's a Marine) is gone so much so the responsibility really falls on my shoulder. Hubby shows him when he's around but without much time and consistency, it's pretty hard. I guess we can try the Cheerio trick and see if it works. Yeah..I wouldn't mind if he goes back and forth between sitting and standing. After all, he's still young (2 y.o)

Can his daddy teach him how to stand and pee? Maybe having a step stool to stand on and do it for him.

myLot reputation of 89/100. Married2aMarine (951)   ranked 60 out of 14,951 in parenting  3 years ago

We tried that. Daddy already showed him many times. He would just stand there on the step stool and do nothing. But as soon as I put him sitting down, he will pee. Hmm...maybe we just need to keep on trying and showing him.

I had tinkle targets(same idea as cheerios). But the best thing that helped my son transition to standing was...the 'pee tree'. We lived out in the woods with no near neighbors. So this was not a big deal.We had a big tree close to huse and he LOVED oeeing on the tree. To this day, when he's at his dad's and he is outside, he still goes on the tree.LOL.

hahaha! That's a funny one. I don't think we can do that here as we have a lot of neighbours. They will think we're so weird! Good suggestion though.

Maybe you could transition him into it slowly. I potty trained my boys the same way my mom did my twin brother. I sat them on the toilet, but facing the back of the toilet. Once they were used to that and had their aim pretty much down pat, I started standing them up.

myLot reputation of 89/100. Married2aMarine (951)   ranked 60 out of 14,951 in parenting  3 years ago

Hmm...I never thought about putting him facing the other way. I guess it makes sense...cos' when he's doing it standing up, he's facing that way too.

I was fairly lucky. I did wait a while to try. My son is my second born and my first born was a handful personality wise, so I put off the potty training ordeal until the summer before he was to start preschool. I guess that would put him at about two and a half. Suprisingly, it went fairly easy.

I'm not sure how this occured to me at the time, but what I figured, was that if I put him it boxers it would feel less like a diaper than briefs would. It would feel more like he had nothing on and he would be more likely to run to the toilet when the urge struck than if he would be wearing briefs (which felt more like diapers). Make sense?

Anyway, that's what I did. I'm not sure if that was the reason it went so well or if it was just coincidence.

Unfortunatley, although the daytime potty training went extremely well, the nighttime "bedwetting" was another issue entirely. But, I chalked that up to him being a heavy sleeper or having a small bladder.

Yeah, I know of many moms who went straight from diapers to underwear. You're one of the lucky few. I don't think it would have worked for me. He would just pee in his pants!

With the aim my son head, him sitting down was a good thing. He started peeing standing up when he went to a daycare center and saw the other boys standing he did it.

I would not worry about it at all, it will happen.
