It may happen as an unintended life saving though I think as wormtail is so very cowardly. I think maybe he will change sides when he sees that voldemort is no longer the stronger ally.

First hand of wormtail was used to give life back to Voldemort, so that might leave him weak at some crucial moment. Or two, Wormtail might finally muster enough courage to distract Voldemort during the crucial struggle with Harry which might give Harry the upper hand!!
