Opening Day |
|
Opening Day for Order of the Phoenix is on Wednesday. I'm leaving work at 5 and meeting my friend at the theater. I have not missed an opening day of HP since before Azkaban. I thought about waiting but just can't do it. What about other Potter fans? Will you be waiting online on opening day or will you wait until the hype and craziness dies down a bit?

1. maddysmommy (10990) | 3 years ago | I want to also go and see it but I am not sure if it is ok for my 4 year old boy, he found one of the other earlier movies scarey so I might have to wait until my hubby gets home or when it hits dvds.

|
dfn12968 (5538) | 3 years ago | I would not recommend it for a four year old, Maddysmommy. I think the movies stopped being for kids after the second one. They are very dark and Order of the Phoenix portrays Harry as a pretty unhappy guy, so I bet it's probably the darkest so far.

2. Transdisc (18489) | 3 years ago | Had I only read, 'Order of the Phoenix', dfn12968, and not your whole discussion, I would have had no idea about what you were speaking. I did not even know what HP meant, and thought it had something to do with Hewlett Packard. I guess that that answers your question in regard to whether I wait until the hype dies down. I have never seen any of the Harry Potter movies, although my children have seen them all and read all of the books. I guess that I need to see them one day.

dfn12968 (5538) | 3 years ago | Ahhhh...I posted it in the Harry Potter section of myLot, so I thought it would be obvious to those who read it, but I forgot some might read it from my "friends discussion" section.
I definitely recommend all the movies and books if that fantasy type thing interests you. They are not for everyone, though. I know many people who have never seen an HP movie or read any of the books and just aren't interested. I've been hooked since the beginning, though.:)
| |
|
|
Transdisc (18489) | 3 years ago | I didn't even notice the interest in which you started this discussion. I responded from my email. Sorry.
I did like The Lord of the Rings, and that's fantasy. I imagine that I would like HP. What do you think of the two?
| |
|
|
dfn12968 (5538) | 3 years ago | The Lord of the Rings movies are my favorite movies pretty much ever. The second was my favorite of the three, but I loved them all and never get tired of them.
I imagine you would enjoy the Harry Potter movies. The first two are more "kids" films, but starting with the third they get pretty dark, and Order of the Phoenix is the darkest one so far, I think. Although with the impending deaths they are talking about for the last one, I'm wondering...
| |
|
|
Transdisc (18489) | 3 years ago | The second Lord of the Rings was also my favorite. Based on your recommendations I must may need to watch the HP movies.
| |
|
|
dfn12968 (5538) | 3 years ago | Rent the first one and see what you think. Just don't blame me if you don't like it.;)

dfn12968 (5538) | 3 years ago | Order of the Phoenix was my second favorite book. The story just interested me so much more than Goblet of Fire. I was so bored with that book, but the movie was much better. I saw the midnight showing last year. It was fun, but even though we preordered our tickets, we still had to wait in line for a long time....be prepared!
I have the book on hold at the library. I'm not buying it for a while, not until it comes out in paperback.

raychill (3493) | 3 years ago | The library I work for has 530 or so holds for Harry Potter. It's ridiculous! What I think is sad is that a lot of the first 30 or so are all staff members, and I don't think that's fair to our patrons. We need them to have the books more than we need the books. But we're getting a lot of copies, so it won't be too bad.
The movie wasn't too bad, it was a SUPER long line to get to the theater. I won't ruin it for you, but they cut a lot out, shortened it very very much. Some scenes were also very anti-climactic when they shouldn't have been. But overall it was a good movie, I wouldn't say my fav though!

|
dfn12968 (5538) | 3 years ago | I loved it!! I actually think it was my favorite so far, even better than Prisoner. I wonder if you didn't care for it as much because it wasn't your favorite book?
I agree about what you said regarding the angst....this was definitely the darkest movie so far, and I didn't sense the darkness as much in the book, but there was so much awesome action, the effects were fabulous, and that chic who played Umbridge was downright creepy. I see Oscar nom all over that performance. I didn't really feel that they left too much out, or at least not any more than they could help.

|
|
raychill (3493) | 3 years ago | Ok I'm going to try to answer both of these in one response so we don't continue with two:)
I think that maybe the cheering and the sleepiness distracting me from the movie and when I see it again maybe I'll see the better things?
I also do agree that it's probably actually better to see the movie and then read the books. They do compliment each other in the way you're saying. I guess my problem is that whenever I read books I always envision it in my head. So it's disappointing when the way it happened in my head was so much cooler than it happened with real movie magic. Like...why was Hagrids brother computer generated? The Giant teacher that was in Goblet of Fire was an actress. So why couldn't they make Hagrids brother an actor too? and not a computer generated monster? I think I just pick out too many little things.
Overall the movie was really good, I think it's just the more I thought about it the more I picked out.
Oh man Umbridge was crazy. They picked a great actress for her that's for sure. I'm also sad now because Sirius is my favorite character. Plus I love Gary Oldman....and he died:(

4. raychill (3493) | 3 years ago | Oh man. We have sooo many people with books pre-ordered at the library (I work for my local library) it's ridiculous. I have it pre-ordered at Barnes and Noble, but definitely waiting to get it!
The Prisoner of Azkaban was my favorite book and I was totally anxious for the movie and very disappointed. Also why I hesitated to get Goblet of Fire on DVD because that was my second favorite book and I didn't want the movie to disappoint like the other one. That wasn't nearly as bad though.
I've heard that the Order of the Phoenix was most everyones favorite. Oh the teen angst just got me!
I'm a little weary on this midnight showing, thanks for the warning!

|
dfn12968 (5538) | 3 years ago | Prisoner was my favorite book, too, but it was also my favorite movie. What disppointed you about it? I did leave too much out, but I think that's inevitable once the story progresses because the books are just so long.
Have fun tonight! I can't wait to see what you think. I just got our tickets today after I left work for the 8pm showing tomorrow night.

raychill (3493) | 3 years ago | I'm so confused as to how I responded twice to your discussion here and now I've repeated myself:( too bad we can't delete comments!
What disappointed me about the movie was that they cut so much out. The sudden friendship Harry developed with the Defense of the Dark Arts teacher was way too fast. The belief in Sirius, that he wasn't a bad guy...also too fast. Plus that whole ordeal, going back in time and everything was so cool in the book and I think it was very anti-climactic in the movie and that's what upset me the most. It just could have been so much better.
| |
|
|
dfn12968 (5538) | 3 years ago | I do remember thinking that they left more out than they should have. I saw it with a friend who hadn't read the book and thought she had to be confused about so much that wasn't mentioned in the movie that was so obvious after reading the book. I actually think the books and movies in this series compliment each other. The books give us a lot of the details the movies have to leave out, but the movies give us the action and visual effects we can't get from the books, plus the make the characters so real. I recommend to anyone who is thinking about trying the series out, that they do both...movie and book, and maybe see the movie before reading the book. That way you might feel like the added details from the books are a bonus instead of seeing the film after reading the book and feeling cheated. Hope that all makes sense.:)

5. ElicBxn (15508) | 3 years ago | I'm actually having to wait until the second day because I failed to get tickets in time for the 11th. But I'm going to see it again on Friday with a different friend.

| |
|
|
dfn12968 (5538) | 3 years ago | That's too bad you have to wait, ElicBxn, I got my tickets today for tomorrow's show and had no problem. Of course the theater is showing it every thirty minutes from 9am until 1040pm.

6. vijigopi (707) | 3 years ago | Well, my hubby is not that interested in going to the movie and I have two very small kids at home that I really don't want to take to the theater. So, I guess it will have to wait until the weekend when my hubby can take care of the kids and I can take a li'l break and enjoy it. I still haven't bought the tickets though. I thought I can buy them just before entering the theater to see the movie, or will that be stupid to do? Goblet of fire was the only film I saw in theater and that too since I was asked by a cousin to go with him. The first three I saw in television. As I started on HP rather late, 3 movies had already come out before I even realised they had been made into movies;)

10. misheleen73 (3135) | 3 years ago | More likely than not, I will be waiting until it is out on DVD. I don't go out to the movies that often, and less if I think there will be a crowd. I usually go to afternoon matinees, when we are usually the only ones there. We have a subscription to Netflix, so we actually end up seeing quite a few movies that way. Just let me know if it was good. :)
