Funny true story... |
|
Well I look back on it and chuckle now, but Mooch one of my lot friends here started a discussion about wearing a wedding ring, so here is a true story in my family.
My mothers baby brother used to get off work and go visit his brother that was tending bar. This girl lived upstairs over the bar and my Uncle Johnnie decided he liked her. I was about 5 or 6 years old, and once a week my momma would take me to WoolWorths Dime store for a hotdog and cherry coke We used to look at the jewelry (more costume jewelry) and they had bridal ring sets for like 3.99 Of course they were not real. I thought they were just for play. But after dating this girl for one week my Uncle Johnny went and bought one of these 3.99 sets and married this girl 3 days later.....the ring turned green on the girls finger cause it was not real gold or probably even silver being that cheap and before he come home, she left him a letter and said the ring turned green on my finger and its not real and i am gone!
ya I still chuckle about it...funny how long loved lasted on a dimestore ring...

I wonder if she kept the ring or threw it away when it turned green on her finger.
I can imagine the look on her moms or even her face when the ring turned green.
How old was he when he did this....
But of course, Alan Jackson sings Living on Love Buying on time, ......and well heres me always broke, but I know my husband loves me.....but I wouldn't wear a dime store ring either.

maries1952 (1408) | 3 years ago | This was back in 1950's as I was only 5 or 6. She laid the rings in his letter, and left. it always makes me smile when I think of him and that story.

2. oneandonemakesix (24038) | 3 years ago | I got to thinking about this some more, and wouldn't it be a great gag gift if you could locate a dimestore ring set for him, and give it to him for Christmas?
I would love to see the look on his face when he opens it....
I think it would be priceless.

maries1952 (1408) | 3 years ago | In the 50's it was close to after depression. You only made like 50 cents an hour. So there wasn't any more money then to buy a real ring than there is now for young people working for 7.00 an hour and girls expecting thousands of dollars for a ring. I think he told mom he had hoped for her to wear it til he could get her a real one and exchange it. He was afraid if he told her that was all he could afford, she would not marry him so he took his chances. He was a good soul and laughed about it instead of getting depressed cause she left He said kind of showed she only wanted money not his love. He never got married again. He lived with a lady and they had a common law marriage. They went on to have 6 children together. But they never married.

4. williamjisir (12934) | 3 years ago | It is really fun to read the story that you have here especially the last part of the story. I think maybe the bride thought that she was hurt by having a fake one from her husband. It could be hurting to have a fake one, not a real one from the husband. Maybe the husband had something that he could not tell his wife for that. I do hope that love will not be just based on things, but true emotion.

maries1952 (1408) | 3 years ago | Yes isn't it amazing how much money plays a part in a relationship? It showed he did not have a true one thats for sure If my first husband could not have afforded a ring set I would have found a set like that and been the happiest woman that he wanted to marry me As it was, we were in the military, it was 1972, and there really weren't the bling bling rings that are out there today I found a bridal set for 100.00. It could have been a thousand it meant just as much. I notice today that young men are supposed to spend 3 months of their paycheck on a ring according to the bridal ettiquette I would just as soon see that go as a down payment on a house or a car or something we need. Nowadays if people would start out slowly with a ring any reputable jeweler will upgrade your ring. So if you spend 300.00 on the first set, then if you go back and turn that set in and add 300.00 you can get a 600.00 set. I know cause I did it later on... But I have been married a couple of times and I have found just as much joy in a 199.00 set as making the man spend that much money But again society steps in and everything gets blown out of proportion. Bless you.

5. goharayub (1961) | 3 years ago | Oh my Gosh, this was very bad really, Gift is a big thing whether it is of 1 dollar or is of 1 lack dollars,Gift is gift and wedding ring what he gave it to her was from her heart whether it is worthy or not but a wife should have thought that it was from her dear husband and may be at that time he was not too rich to support gold ring for her? I think this way, By the way hey mom,how are you? am missing you. Love you mom, Your Son Gohar

6. Katlady2 (4465) | 3 years ago | Now that is pretty funny. Serves the guy right for buying a totally cheap ring for her. But it must not have been love of any kind on her part if all she was concerned about was the value of a piece of jewelry.

maries1952 (1408) | 3 years ago | Well I always thought a ring was better than no ring. In the 50's the average wage was like 1.00 an hour. So I really don't think there was much money to go around for things like rings. I just could not believe she left him like that Guess it sure was not love on her part LOL
