A Jar of Nothing  

I have seen these many times at craft fairs and garage sales. They are sorta cute. I personally would not give this as a gift because I think it is cruel. LOL I have reason for that though.

I always wanted to be a writer and ask Santa for a type writer for Christmas. This was in the early 70's so electic type writers were not available on our budget. I just wanted a small manual type writer. Come Christmas morning I had a package under the tree that looked like my type writer but I was not allowed to open it until last. I was aloowed to pick it up. It was heavy. I was so excited. Finally I was allowed to open that package and it was a.........rock. yep a rock and I cried all day. That was the worst Christmas I ever had. I would never give a gag gift as a result of that Christmas.

Hahaha. That is a really funny gift. I will keep this in mind... my mother always says she wants "nothing" for her birthday, christmas, etc.. expecting to get something. Well, not this year! haha

A Jar of Nothing. Now that's interesting. I don't know if I could give it as a "gift," but maybe a white elephant gift. LOL!

I might be able to find something a little more sentimental to write... Jar of Love or something... Might have to think about this one. Cute idea! :)

Cute idea :-) It would be something my hubby would buy for me (just to be a smart-you-know-what) although he would also have something else tucked away for me after the inital shock had worn off. After 8 years of his smartness LOL its hard to shock me anymore though. Now we have a jar of 'nothing'---now what about finding those 2 kids that I have been taking care of for YEARS---Not Me and Ida Know????

That's a cute idea! It'd be a great joke on all those people who always say "Nothing". You could also mix together all those tiny crafting scraps for a pretty jar of "Whatever" or "I don't know". And then for those people who say "Oh, don't get me anything big, something little will be fine" you could do it like a jar of Nothing only change the saying to something like "You said you wanted something little and I didn't want to disappoint you, this jar contains the smallest ___(fill in the blank with something they like)___ who knows maybe there are TWO!

If I said get me nothing, it means get me nothing, if someone gave me an empty jar, I'd likely throw it and make them clean it up.

I think its cruel to do that....

Well, it's kinda good. But it's better to give this if something is tucked up to accompany this jar - a little something. Maybe her favorite coffee table book, a nice sweatshirt for dad, coin collection set for the little collector in the family, or any other little something just so you won't see disappointment in their faces. A box of candies would also bring delight to the toddler.
Another idea is to give them an idea why you chose to give them such gift. Maybe, you could write that you were thinking that they could place their small stuff in the jar for easy retrieval. Or any purpose for that matter.

That is so awesome! I am going to use this idea! I either get lists too huge to fulfill or I get the "Oh, please don't get me anything" response. Perfect!
