what age should toilet training begin at? |
|
I have a 15 month old, I am not interested in toilet training him yet as he doesn't seem ready. But I am asking because, today I was at a friend's house. Her boy is 3 years 9 months old, nearly 4 years. He had a nappy on! Is it normal for children this age to not be trained completely? Any opinions welcome.

1. hip2bemom (2358) | 3 years ago | My daughter was hard to potty train I started at 2 but she was almost 4 before she got it. I put pull ups on her for the longest time but then I though she knows that the pull up will hold in the wetness and she will not have to worry about it so I decided to put underwear on her she had some accidents but she knew it would travel down her legs so she started running to the potty I think pull ups hampered her potty training and if I would have just used underwear to begin with it would not have taken so long. I am really glad she is trained now!

hip2bemom (2358) | 3 years ago | Do you mean 12 months?

|
|
foxyfire33 (5796) | 3 years ago | Ah, that's a possibility. I hadn't thought of 12 MONTHS. Guess I was crankier than I realized today!

babykay (1295) | 3 years ago | surely even 12 months is a bit young.

foxyfire33 (5796) | 3 years ago | It seems too young to me too but I know that some people will begin "potty training" by holding infants over the toilet at frequent, regular intervals throughout the day. I've heard many stories of parents actually being able to sucessfully "train" babies to only go at those times. I think the youngest I've heard of was a 9 month old. I personally think it's the parents that are "trained" to take the babies to the bathroom often enough so there are no accidents and that the babies don't have a clue what's going on until they're older but...I never cared if my 1 year old wore diapers or not so it's not up to me to say what other people should do with their babies LOL.

| 3. raynemarie (27) | 3 years ago | my daughter now 9 years old, wasn't ready for potty training at ages 2, 3, but at age 4 we started potty training and by her 5th birthday she was fully night and day potty trained. She is my only daughter I have 2 boys who are older than she. My oldest son was potty trained between myself and his fathers mother by age 3 1/2 (he's now almost 17) and my other son was potty trained by age 3 his father was pushing it to get him into preschool but he really wasnt ready. Looking back on it I wish I'd waited til he was ready (he's now 15). Out of my 3 children my 15 year old is the only one who had accidents at night and he's slowly outgrowing that problem.
Anyway each child is different. Its best if the child is fully ready and pushing it does no good. Wishing you all the luck in this.

4. foxyfire33 (5796) | 3 years ago | I would guess that the average age for potty training is 3 but boys do tend to be harder sometimes. My older three trained right around three years but my fourth still isn't completely even though we've been trying for two years. He is now 4 years and 4 months old and has no developmental delays of problems. He just won't use the potty.

5. Ravenladyj (18010) | 3 years ago | OMG no no I am sorry but I have serious issues with that to be perfectly honest with you...There is IMO NO REASON for a child that age to still be in diapers..thats just ridiculous as far as I'm concerned....Do you have any idea WHY the parents are allowing it? Could it be a medical thing maybe or do you think they just cant be bothered or wht?
If its not medical...than thats just insane IMO..not to mention damaging...

6. megs85 (1275) | 3 years ago | My son is fourteen months old and definitely not ready to be toilet trained either... I figure once they can verbalise the need to go to the toilet and are confident enough with walking, and other coordination it is time to try. One of my nephews is almost 4 and he hasn't had a nappy on since before he turned three, however he still occassionally has accidents particularly during the night. I think anything is normal. All children are different and develop differently. I think that by 4- 4 1/2 most accidents should have stopped, but again this is flexible. I don't think anything is set in concrete. My fourteen month old is my first child, so I haven't really had any experience with this all and anything I say is strictly my own thoughts and opinions. Your friends son will get there... do you know if he has been trained at all? Perhaps she still leaves a nappy on her son when he is napping or something?

8. syndibee (442) | 3 years ago | my son is 16 months old and we have begun the process. he now knows when he goes and lets me know. we aren't pushing him but i hope to have him trained by 2. as for a child almost 4 years old, as someone else already mentioned, if there are no medical conditions then this child should at least be getting worked with to learn to use the potty.

9. teapotmommommerced (5724) | 3 years ago | I think you should start to potty train a child around the age of two or when they wake up in the moring with a dry diaper on. That is the advice I got.

10. Carrie26 (1086) | 3 years ago | I have been having problems with my son being potty trained. He is a little over 3 years old and sits down on the potty but doesnt do anything.I think every child is differnt and some can be challenge to potty train than others.I think it is best not to push them.I know some people might get thier son or daughters potty trained by 12 months,2 years old and 3 years old and that is good. But shouldnt critisize parents who are trying to potty train a child that might not be ready.Sometimes I think some people want to hurry up a child to be be potty trained because well so in so has thier child potty trained or had their child ptty trained by that age.But to push a child if their not ready will not work.No offense to anyone just voicing my opinion.

| wildnspeady (26) | 3 years ago | this might sound weird to you but did you try putting a handfull of cherrios in the potty and telling him to sink them.....lol ok so it sounds funny but thats how I got my son potty trained, he would always just sit on the potty and do nothing, but when I put the cherrios in then he couldnt wait to go....lol As for ages, and boys being harder, I have to say that in my experience my daughter was the hardest one to train. We tried at about a 1yr, but she wasnt ready and we kept trying every few months but it took her till she was almost 3 1/2 before she was potty trained, and we even tried the underware deal, but she seemed to like making puddles on the floor better. My son (thanks to the cherrios...lol) was trained at 2 yrs.

Carrie26 (1086) | 3 years ago | Thanks for the idea I will have to try that one.LOL.I hope it works because I would like for him to be potty trained. And thanks for not being so judgemental and understanding of how some kids are different and for some it takes a little more time.
