Should I cancel my son's Birthday party? |
|
I have three kids. My two girls have their birthday in the spring, usually in a nice park and we go all out. We tried that for my son who has his birthday at the end of JULY. We live in florida. When we have it outside it is a disaster. People are way to hot, or I have it inside and they are all cramped inside my tiny livingroom which is no fun for my child.
I asked him where he wanted his birthday this year. He mentioned that he wanted to go swimming, soooooo I thought this was a great idea. I rented the pool for 5 hours for our family and friends. I sent out all the invites and everyone thought it was such a nice idea. Well everyone except for one person. I feel so bad, I never even thought of it. It is my husband's grandmother who is in her 80's. This saturday is the party, she WON'T swim and doesn't even know how. I just found out the heat index for my part of the country will be 105. What should I do? I can't expect her to sit in the hot sun, or even under an umbrella while we swim for 5 hours. SHe would be devistated if she couldn't come. I feel horrible now.

First make sure you do have a pool umbrella. make sure she has plenty of her favorite drink available with ice. Non-alcoholic please. Get an electric fan from someone. I'm sure there will be an electric outlet in the pool area. You might need an extension cord.
Make sure she wears light clothes or even a bathing suit if she wishes. She doesn't have to swim. I'm sure there's a shallow end of the pool which she can stand in. It doesn't take any effort for her to stand in water waste high. There probably are steps going into the pool she can sit on. If not she can dangle her legs in the pool. If she is wearing something that can get wet have the kids wet her in her chair if she doesn't mind.
I'm sure she knows herself well enough to know her limits. But have a few of the adults keep an eye on her.
She'll be just fine and the time will fly by.

jumpinjack00 (1389) | 3 years ago | Hope it was of some assistance. You could simply ask her what would make her comfortable at the pool. Have fun at the party. It will be fine.

2. linzmcwilliams (1121) | 3 years ago | I'm sure that not everyone will be swimming for 5 hours on the trot, people will be coming in and out of the pool so she will have people to talk to. As for the heat as long as she has an umbrella and a cold drink and sure she won't mind. She will like to see her grandson having fun. That's what the day is all about. Don't cancel it, i'm sure at 80 she can accept that she can't do everything that she used to be able to do. If she gets too hot she can go inside then come out when she cools down. I hope your son has a great time, don't let this spoil it and stop worrying so much!:]

3. maryannemax (10433) | 3 years ago | don't feel bad. atleast you tried and think of ways to make your son happy for his birthday. that's one good thing. you sent invites to people who are close to you. another good thing done. and you worry about your husband's gradma which really proves you are a good person.
i think she will understand. and for sure, she won't feel bad because she knew that you did not forget her. and if ever she'll come, she can stay in a shaded area and have food while watching you and others have fun. and ofcourse, you and others should be coming by her to keep her company from time to time as well. just don't make her feel alone and left behind. i know everything will be just great for you and for your son... anne

5. kgwat70 (10106) | 3 years ago | Does the pool have an indoor area that she can watch everyone swim from and spend time with everyone? If so, she could do that since many people do not like to spend all day in the hot and humid weather. Maybe you can find an indoor pool that everyone can enjoy and not worry about the weather. Maybe you can spend part of the day at some place indoors before going to the pool.

6. ctrymuziklvr (4677) | 3 years ago | You really can't change your plans because of one person, especially when it's your sons special day and this is what he wanted. I give you a lot of credit for thinking of such a fun idea. Your an awesome mommy! Everyone has given you some great ideas and I can't add to them. Do what they have suggested and your son and everyone else will have a great day! Don't forget to have some fun yourself!

| 7. sneese (63) | 3 years ago | I don't think you are the first to be put in this situation! I know I've been there many times. But I think the thing to remember is that it is your son's birthday and this is what he wanted. It's his special day. Make sure Grandma has an umbrella and plenty of cold drinks, let her dangle her feet in the water. I don't mean to sound mean. I loved my Grandmother. Yes, she will be hurt if she can't come, but I think she will enjoy seeing her grandchild having fun. Make sure you include her in the fun, she may not be able to swim, but she can catch a beach ball, or toss it. And I'm sure that not everyone invited will be in the pool all at the same time, so there will always be someone there to be with her. But I think the bottom line is what I have already stated: It's your son's day, you've asked him what he wanted. Good luck, and have fun.

8. gardengrrl (841) | 3 years ago | No, don't cancel, it sounds like it has been hard to find a birthday celebration in the hot weather. It's about your son, not his great-grandmother.
I agree, shade, fan, and an endless supply of water ice should keep her cool. She can wade or dip her feet in the pool. If she's the complain-y type, remind her how hard it is to throw a suitable party for your July baby.
Have fun! Your son is lucky you're his mom!

gardengrrl (841) | 3 years ago | Oh, I forgot, if you get a hot water bottle and fill it with ice, she can put it on her neck to help beat the heat. A dishpan of ice water to put her feet in will work, too.

barbaradjt (4120) | 3 years ago | Yeah, she has dementia and alzheimers. She can be a bit difficult. I know she won't go near the water, but maybe a pan of water for her feet she would do. Thanks thats a great idea.

9. jessicalynmartin (499) | 3 years ago | I believe that you should do what your son wants to do on his birthday - it is his birthday. He should get to celebrate how he wants. It wouldn't be fair that your daugthers get a birthday that they really want, but because your son was born in a hot month (at no fault of his own), his parties aren't what he wants.
As for your husbands grandmother, maybe you can have a little dinner or something and that is where she can help your son celebrate his birthday.
You're never got to please everything. Someone is always going to have a problem with something. As I said before... it's your son's birthday and that is really all that should matter on that day.
| |
| |
|
|
barbaradjt (4120) | 3 years ago | That is a great idea too. Maybe I could have her over for dinner and she would be happier doing that. I will have to just ask her and see how she feels about it. Thanks!

10. senthil2k (1263) | 3 years ago | Please dont cancel the Birthday party at the Pool and make your Son sad on his birthday. Its more important to keep your Son happy on his birthday, than keeping your husband's grandmother happy.
If you can explain that to her, I think she will definitely understand that. Elders will always have the patience in understand the younger's feelings and I believe this will be true in the case of your Husbands's grandmother also. Explain her and everything will be fine. Enjoy your son's birthday with him.
