When should I move my daughter from her crib to a bed? | | | | My daughter will be 18 months old on August 1st and she is around 33.5 inches tall. Her crib instructions say that the crib should not be used after the child is 35 inches tall. I can see good points and bad points both for leaving her in a crib and for moving her to a bed. We have friends though who have a three and a half year old boy and a 9 month old girl. They did not move the boy to a bed until they were pregnant with the girl, which means the boy was around 2 and a half when they moved him. So I am a bit unsure of when to move my daughter. I was hoping to learn three things here: 1. What age are children commonly moved to a bed at? 2. What has been your personal experience with moving your children from cribs to beds? 3. Can you give any tips for making the transition any easier whenever I do it? Thanks in advance for any help you can give;) | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |

| | Basically what I have always heard is to get your baby a toddler bed once they start climbing (or trying to) out of the crib, because it is dangerous for them to be trying to climb over the bars, they could fall. My best friend's daughter was just a little bit older that yours when she got her her toddler bed. | | | | | | | | SamtoEarth (70)

| | Interestingly enough, though my daughter climbs everything else she has not tried climbing out of her crib. However, there isn't really anything for her to climb on in the crib (I have, however, seen her climbing on the outside of the crib - trying to get in ? :) | | | | | | | bed sheets On Sale Now Save 80% off. | | I put my daughter in a little toddler bed when she was 16 months old. I would have put her in a twin bed but I couldn't afford one at that moment. A toddler bed uses the crib mattress and lets them get used to being in a bed before they move to a regular bed. Just one problem I had tho.. once she realized that she could get out of bed without help, I had to sit with her until she fell asleep so she wouldn't get into mischief. | | The crib we have converts into a toddler bed. We were given this crib otherwise we probably wouldn't have it. Like you, I would have preferred to put her straight to a twin bed because that is what my mom says she did for my brother and I. But as usual God has provided what we needed though we didn't know we needed it. Our living and financial situations right now would not allow us to get a twin bed right now. But also like you, I will probably have to sit with her because she can easily get in and out of our bed, so hers will be no problem ;) | | | | | | | Platform Beds On Sale Now All Colors, Solid Hardwood Designs Ship Fast & Free: Platform Bed Sale HumbleAbode.com/Platform-Beds | add comment | | | |

| | it depends more on the child themselves. they do give those guidlines mostly because by that time, the child should be tall enough to figure out how to climb out of the crib on their own. when that time happens, then its safer for your child to be moved to a daybed with a side rail. My nephew is now 2 and he goes back and fourth between the bed and crib. he's expecting a baby brother so he's mostly in his bed since the crib is now ready for the new baby. My oldest son never liked his crib and just loved the bed. we just have to get him out of ours, but thats another post..lol my 2nd sons crib can convert into a daybed, so thats what I did for him at around 2...he's almost 4 now and he still loves his bed. as long as he fits in it, he'll stay in it. Tips...what fears do you have about moving your child? most parents are worried about their children falling off. there isn't to much to worry. get a bad that isn't that high. less then a 1ft drop will not hurt that much. get some good quality bed rails for the best just to be sure. You can even place blankets or pillows on the floor near your child. For your child. start out by nap times in the bed, then when they're comfortable sleeping in it, you can start night time sleeping. body pillows help especially if the bed is large. Your child is normally ready before you are. Most of the anxiety will come from you and not your child. She seems a little young just yet. you can try, if yours converts to a daybed. see if she likes it. the things about beds is...they can get out and play or roam around the house at night. for that. use gates on the doorways of the bedroom. | | | | | | | | SamtoEarth (70)

| | Thanks for all the tips. Actually the main reason I ask is I am ready to be done with the crib - leaning in and out, lifting my daughter, laying her down - I look forward to being able to sit on the bed beside her. I do worry a bit about her falling out because she does wiggle a lot in her sleep, but we have plenty of spare blankets and pillows to lay around her. The getting out and playing is another concern -we'll just have to see how it goes. Thanks again! | | | | | | | Super cheap Bed Frames Cheap Bed Frames at Best-Price.com! | | I am not sure what other people do with their children, on the subject of beds. I guess I remember my oldest child best. He developed the habit, at one year old, of climbing over the rails and letting himself fall to the floor. Granted, because of how the room was built, we had shortened the legs, but it felt dangerous to me. By 15 months we had moved him to a twin sized bed. We did not do a youth bed transition. We used an old bed we got from the neighbors, and bought a new mattress. Cut the legs short on it too. His grandma made him a special quilt out of fabric with a favorite character on it, and we made it a real celebration to move into the bed. He never fell out of the bed, but we had put a pad down beside it,in case he did. Again, for my daughter, she was ready for a big girl bed, and I do not remember a special blanket, but there probably was one. We re did the room, draped off a sleeping alcove, and bought a cute wooden bed for her. Again, I am pretty sure it was in the summer before she turned two in November. I had a friend with children less than two years apart, she left them both in cribs forever, it seemed to me. I think she thought of her children as babies much longer because of it. My kids were ready to be kids by the time they were your daughter's age. So I would say: I think your child is old enough to move out of her crib. One of my personal rules was that we would do it before I was pregnant again, so the child did not feel like the baby stole the bed. I would not have done it in the middle of a move or other big transition, either. I might use this time to let her pick out favorite bedding to use on her bed, and make it a real celebration. | | | | | | | | SamtoEarth (70)

| | Thanks for mentioning the bedding, I had meant to ask about that too and forgot. I have been cautious about that because of all the warnings about putting soft things in a child's crib. Did you use a top sheet too, or just the blanket? Was the blanket big enough to tuck in, or just lay over top of the child? How about a pillow? I'm hoping that real bedding might make her move less during the night so she would be less likely to fall out of a bed(one of my concerns with moving her). Making it a celebration is a great idea, thank you very much. I also like the idea of letting them be kids rather than babies. I've felt a little weird saying I have a baby ever since my daughter could walk pretty well. She has so much personality and independence, and so many abilities that she doesn't seem to be that much of a baby to me ;) | | | | GardenGerty (35316)

| | At 18 months she is old enough to disentangle herself if she needed to from a blanket and pillow. She is also old enough to communicate, by crying or whatever, if she has a problem. As she is a healthy child, and has no respiratory issues, and you are, I assume, not smokers, she will be fine. The new special bedding was a full size quilt, made by grandma, that had Winnie the Pooh characters. She also made a small pillow. If you still feel concerned about a soft pillow, I would suggest looking at a tempur pedic pillow at Wal Mart, as these are quite firm. They are also expensive, at about $18. My daughter loved sleeping in her bed, and did not get up and disturb us. My son would wake up but also I do not remember him getting up and disturbing us. Our room was actually connected to his. He actually did a better job sleeping once he was in the bed, although he did not get really good at it until we gave him a baby sister to keep him company.LOL. She was my good sleeper. Yes, I used a top sheet, pillow case, and the little quilt/comforter that grandma made. So, does a toddler bed use crib size bedding? I never had one.

| | In our case the bedding is the same size because it is our crib, it just converts into a bed (big conversion - take off one side and stick in a straight piece that is even with the frame for support :) So we still have the same mattress. | | | | | | | Sheets & Bedding Full Selection of Sheets, Bedding & More. | | If your daughter is constantly standing up in her crib and tries to climb out of her crib, then it is time to move her to a bed. Get a bed that has rails on each side so she doesn't fall off the bed, then you can gradually take those off. That would be the transition part. Just give her a lot of praise for sleeping in a big bed. It is all part of the growing up process. Good luck with this. | | | | | | | | SamtoEarth (70)

| | Thank you for your comment. She stands a lot but doesn't try to climb out that I've noticed - but there is nothing for her to climb on. We'll be sure to remember to give her a lot of praise and encouragement when we do it :) Thanks again! | | | | | | | XL Twin Sheets Quality Sheets. Reasonable Prices. | | I moved both of my children out of their cribs when they were able to pull themselves into a standing position in the crib. In order to make the transition easier, you should use a toddler bed that has a rail so that they feel more secure, and you feel better leaving them in the bed alone. As long as they are not climbers (many of them are, lol!) they should be fine in a toddler bed after a few nights. If they are climbers, I recommend leaving them in the crib a little longer, since the rails on a crib are generally higher than those on most toddler beds, making it more difficult for them to climb out. Also, it's a good idea to have a soft rug or even a small soft mat or mattress near the bed or crib, in case they do become agile enough, and clever enough to escape their bed or crib. The toddler beds are generally close to the ground, so they are fairly safe if the child should fall out or climb out. Cribs are higher from the ground, so you'll want to take precautions such as the soft rug or mattress. It all depends on your child's ability to climb. As long as your child stays in a toddler bed, without climbing out, I think you can move her when she reaches the 35 inch limit. However, if you are more comfortable leaving her in a crib, as long as she stays in there and doesn't try to climb out, you can leave her in a crib until you feel ready to make the transition. | | | | | | | Gemmygirl1 (2628)

| | In Australia, when they can sit, is when it's a good time to take them out of a bassinet & put them in a cot, the cot has high sides so they can stand up & an adjustable mattress heights - here, you wouldn't take a child out of a cot when they are ONLY able to pull themselves up - we had the mattress raised & when our daughter could pull herself to a standing position is when you're supposed to drop the height of the mattress. They don't need to be in a big bed until they are able to walk & are able to or at least try to climb out of the cot. Toddler beds are kind of a waste of money i think coz you buy the cot & then have to buy the toddler bed, followed by a normal bed - you're better off not buying a toddler bed - only have one if your cot is able to turn in to one! Save yourself some money & buy a normal bed for her but pick one that sits low - the Asian style ones are low to the ground & so are the ones that have drawers underneath! | | | | | SamtoEarth (70)

| | She is definitely a climber :) But she is also very good at it, not prone to fall - she easily climbs in and out of our bed. But I would put something soft on the floor in case she moved enough in her sleep to fall out. As far as being ready to transition, I am the one who is really ready - I am very tired of the crib ;) Thanks for your response! | | | | | | | Top Rated Baby Crib Store Special Promotion! | | My son is 2 years old. Before i put him in a bed, i made a nice little bed type thing in our bedroom on the floor with blankets. the reason i put him in our room is so i could close the door, that way if he happened to wake up before me, he couldnt get out of the room and cause trouble... I would take our couch cussions and body pillows and put them around the bed that i made. i would then monitor how much he moved around, and once he stopped tossing and turning a lot, i put him in a bed. i put the bed in a corner so he cant fall off of the 2 sides, and put body pillows on the other 2 sides. this is just an idea that i came up with. i hope it helps! good luck | | | | | | | | SamtoEarth (70)

| | Very creative, I like it! Our crib converts to a toddler bed, and I think it keeps the rails on three sides. So like you I would probably use a pillow on the one open side and something soft on the floor. | | My Mum said she taught me to safely climb out of my cot when i was little & i was in a bed soon after that!!! Basically, here in Oz, the common age to change them to a big bed is around 2 years old. You can buy the little safety sides that attach to the bed in case of rolling but i have noticed, most kids don't roll too much anyway because they have become used to sleeping in a smaller bed, so they don't move as much. When you do change them from the cot to the bed, make it fun for them, let your daughter pick out her bed coverings (find some nice ones & let her pick the one she likes most), try & keep everything the same as it was - if she's in the same room, put the new bed, where the cot was! Also, this is a good time to read to them - when you can sit on the side of the mattress next to them & that should help some too. I don't think the cots here say a lot about when to change over (you have different laws & regulations to here) but you'll know when to do it - when she can get out or almost get out is a good place to start. I don't usually go on heights etc because she may not be interested in climbing & if she's not, it doesn't mean you can leave her in there indefinitely!!! Good luck but i would suggest giving it another 6 months & then swap her over! | | | | | | | | SamtoEarth (70)

| | My daughter can already climb in and out of our bed easily so I don't think hers will be a problem(well, in that way. It may be a problem in that she can do it so easily ;) She can actually climb most anything, and even though it can be exasperating by times, I really am proud of her accomplishments. In response to your previous comment, the crib we were given converts into a toddler bed. We probably wouldn't have bought one like that ourselves because I wanted to move her straight to a regular bed like you mentioned. But it really is God's provision because we can't afford another bed at the moment, and in our small apartment don't really have room. You have some very helpful advice and I appreciate it a lot. We do read together before bed anyway and I am looking forward to being able to sit next to her in bed and read(one of many reasons I am ready to switch her over :) And the bed will be in the same place since we just have to change a few things on it. But having read all the responses here I think we will make a little party of it and have fun with it.
