You're the only one who likes it..... |

I was just tagging my memory discussion with the term brain cloud. This made me think of the movie Joe Vs. the Volcano with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. I loved that movie but it was pretty universally panned by everyone, not just critics. I thought it was great and have seen it several times. Are there any movies that you love that the overall concensus is they suck? Or, what about the opposite? Any movie you couldn't stand that was a critic or viewer favorite?

2. raychill (3491) | 1 year ago | Joe Vs The Volcano is the BEST movie EVER! I own it on Dvd. Bought it for like 6 bucks! I love a ton of movies other people don't like. Dude, where's my car? GREAT HILARIOUS movie. A lot of movies I love are obscure and people haven't seen it which is crazy to me. Monster Squad was just released tuesday on DVD. the 20th anniversary edition. Great movie but hardly anyone remembers it. Most movies that get rave reviews...are ridiculously uninteresting to me.

dfn12968 (5580) | 1 year ago | Hmmm...maybe I'm wrong about everyone hating Joe Vs. The Volcano?? LOL. I LOVE Dude Where's My Car!! I swear it is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. I haven't seen it in ages. I must go hunt it down at Hollywood Video!

raychill (3491) | 1 year ago | ha ha I own Dude! too. I convinced my bro that movie didn't suck and got him to watch it and he liked it. He thought he'd hate that one. I was like NOOO seriously it's funny! I swear! But I know I totally love Joe vs. The volcano. Tom Hanks hasn't been in many bad movies. I can't think of one that he's been in actually.

dfn12968 (5580) | 1 year ago | Hmmmm....a bad Tom Hanks movie. I just looked at IMDB and found a few that were not up to his normal quality. You've got Mail was weak compared to his other Meg movies. Ladykillers was pretty lame, I thought. And, as good a movie as I'm sure Saving Private Ryan was, I couldn't get through it. Too violent and about a time period that doesn't interest me. I really liked The DaVinci Code, though, and most people didn't.

|
|
raychill (3491) | 1 year ago | I have not yet seen the DaVinci code. I'm really not that interested, I forgot about that one. I liked Ladykillers... but I did think the other people were better than him. Admittingly I love You've got Mail. It's no Sleepless in Seattle, but I love it nevertheless. I forgot about Saving Private Ryan too. I did see that. I actually cracked up laughing with my friend in the middle of the movie theater. We got a lot of dirty looks. I couldn't help it. The concept of some dude getting his arm blown off, picking it up and trying to put it back on... I just cracked up!

dfn12968 (5580) | 1 year ago | I am the only person on the planet that hated the DaVinci Code book, so I wasn't excited at all to see the movie. But, my parents were visiting and really wanted to see it, so we went and it was fun. A lot more action than the book, much less technical. I enjoyed it. I didn't hate You've Got Mail, I was just so disappointed because I love the Tom/Meg pairings and was looking forward to it a lot. It didn't come close to Sleepless or Volcano so I was bummed out.

raychill (3491) | 1 year ago | I never had any interest in reading the DaVinci code either. I think that's a book and movie I can just go with out ever caring for or seeing it. on another note: I am, however, off work all week next week and I think I'm going to treat myself to seeing Ratatouille! I was in the Disney Store last night and saw all these cute Ratatouille things and I was just like I NEED TO SEE IT!

dfn12968 (5580) | 1 year ago | Tell me what you think when you see it. My best friend didn't like it, but I think that's because she said it was too scary for her kids. Not sure why. Every other person who's seen it has loved it.

raychill (3491) | 1 year ago | yeah my boss' daughter saw it. she's 12. She really liked it. I'm sure it's good! It better be if I'm going to the theaters to see it. The toys in the store the other day when I went shopping for my nephews birthday just inspired me to see it!

3. inked4life (3296) | 1 year ago | The one that always springs to mind for me is Godzilla. I thought it was great and it got totally blasted by the critics and moviegoers. As for ones that I think sucked, you can pretty much look at 90% of the Oscar nominated movies that I think are boring or just plain awful...there are a few exceptions like Braveheart, Silence Of The Lambs, and American Beauty. Mpre recently everyone was raving about Knocked Up and I thought it was just okay, nothing special

|
|
dfn12968 (5580) | 1 year ago | I have only seen two of the movies you mentioned. I loved Braveheart....Amercian Beauty though, not so much. Silence of the Lambs has always been one of those "I know I have to see it....but, just not yet" movies. I have usually seen and agree with two or three of the Oscar contenders, but rarely does the movie that I think should win actually win. This year and last were exceptions. Loved Crash and The Departed. Gosford Park was the Oscar movie that I couldn't stand that everyone raved about. I think I fell asleep.

4. Katesmama (3232) | 1 year ago | When it comes to movies, me and the guy listen to the critics. Not so much our friends. When people, my friends, tell me that an movie is great, I'll see it with high expectaions and I'm ususally let down from all the hype. When we go to the video store(/tanning salon) we look for the awards movies have won. We both enjoy the obsure and indie stuff.

dfn12968 (5580) | 1 year ago | I try not to pay attention to critics, but if I'm on the fence, then the reviews will make up my mind for me. If it's a movie I have been dying to see, I'll most likely see it anyway, regardless of what anyone says. But, if I'm not quite sure I want to see it, then what the critics say will matter much more.

5. Ariander (479) | 1 year ago | I absolutely adored the movie Dragon Heart -- it used to be my favorite movie. Most reviews I read, though, gave Dragon Heart, at best, tepid ratings. Still, a lot of people seemed to like it - everyone I've talked to who has seen it liked it (or at least didn't think it was horrible), so it wasn't a total fail. On the flip side, I thought The Prestige was ridiculous. Granted, it had its moments and some interesting concepts worth pondering, but overall, like I said, it just seemed silly to me. Almost all my friends loved it, though, and the critics gave it awesome reviews. Another that almost everyone seems to love (who has seen it), is the Japanese thriller/horror movie Audition. I've yet to see a horrible review and everyone I've talked to who has seen it loved it. I just don't get why these movies were so well liked; I must have missed something.

6. misheleen73 (3138) | 1 year ago | I absolutely hated the movie "Lost in Translation" that was so raved about with Bill Murray (whom I normally love) Come to think of it, most critic ravers I tend to not like. I go by what I think, my interests, etc. I LOVE Groundhog Day, Excalibur (very obscure, not widely seen movie), Dragonheart, and many other movies critics usually bag on. I like Joe vs the Volcano too. I really tend to watch movies opposite to what critics say, if a critic raves about it, I usually skip it...lol.

dfn12968 (5580) | 1 year ago | Welcome home!! I was just thinking about you yesterday, miseleen73, and wondering when you'd be back! I can't wait to hear about your trip. I can't related about Lost in Translation because I loved it, but I do agree that often the critics are pretty opposite of how I feel about movies. For me it's more if a critic hates it, it means I'll probably enjoy it. Overall I just try to not listen to them and make my own judgements about everything. If I want to see it, I see it. The only time the critics matter is if I'm on the fence about the movie and not sure if I want to see it or not. Then I might be more apt to liste to what they have to say.

7. Savvynlady (2050) | 1 year ago | Personally, I enjoyed Joe Vs the Volcano. Watched it some years ago, but when it came to big scene, somehow, we wasn't able to see it until some time later. One of the reasons I really like it is because this man had a job that was ho hum; the surroundings of the job was as dreary as it looked too, and he escaped that for a dream of a lifetime.
