Can't DENY it anymore, I HAVE a HUNTER cat .... email this discussion to a friend?

So most of my friends know, I have 2 cats, one of them is my profile aviatar. Well, my cats are strictly household cats and never go outside, I prefer it that way, and since we lived in a big city and in a high rise apartment when they first were adopted by me, I have always raised them to not go outside. Anyways, these days I live in a nice big house on an acreage of land and over the last few days both my b/f and I have noticed an increase in the mouse population near our home. We have been cleaning up in our efforts to find the real reason they have arrived. Today, my big boy (my aviatar), his name is Jackson Browne came up missing. I figured he must have figured out how to get in the attic since the air conditioner guy who visited our house earlier today had left the door open for the attic, when I went to go find him in the attic I was surprised to find him proudly walking down the hallway with a mouse his mouth. Needless to say, I was so very proud of him, my b/f was just kidding me the other night telling me my cats were too spoiled to even look at a mouse, I should have taken a picture of him with the mouse but in my hast to to remove it from my house I failed to do so.

I am so proud of my boy, he is truly a hunter!!

Good for him. I hate mice. Go, Jackson Browne!!!

myLot reputation of 99/100. texasclassygal (3438)   ranked 167 out of 7,715 in cats  3 years ago

They are just such nasty creatures, I have nothing against them, except I don't want to live with them ... thanks for responding dear friend!

That's the way I feel. I don't mind them existing, as long as it's outside our house. Good to talk to you again, texasclassygal! Lots of luvs!

I know it's nature and I know it's their way of bringing back a trophy to their owners, but it's also cruel, as you know I've got pet frogs now, I love frogs and I have 4! Our youngest or my housemates youngest Octavia is the worst of them all! The amount of times she brings in animals. I was woken up at 4am in the morning by this horrible squeaking noise she had got another frog and the poor thing! We managed to save it in time, others have been less fortunate. The tank can't hold any more frogs LOL! All the cats go outside, the females are worst than the males!

myLot reputation of 99/100. texasclassygal (3438)   ranked 167 out of 7,715 in cats  3 years ago

I like frogs and I would never let my cats play with them, but mice are different, they should not be in a house that you live in and I am so very proud of him for doing this for us ... such a hunter cat.

Thanks for responding wolfie, it is always a pleasure to see you at one of my discussions!

74 days and counting ....

myLot reputation of 99/100. wolfie34 (13861)   ranked 74 out of 7,715 in cats  3 years ago

You know in those old films with the hunters that have their kills displayed on the wall, you know the lions head, the rhino's head etc.. Well your cat would have all the heads of the mice on the wall to display it's prowess at hunting! Like a hunters gallery! Thank you my dear friend, it's past midnight here so that makes it 73 days and counting;0) xxxxx

myLot reputation of 99/100. wolfie34 (13861)   ranked 74 out of 7,715 in cats  3 years ago

Oh gawd, talk about timing Octavia has just brought something in, I know she has something in her mouth and she's just rushed in speed of light straight upstairs, better go and rescue it before she wakes 'him' up! Looks like a mouse, night night xxx

At least it is not a frog ... so, it is 73 days and counting

I think you are going to have to put a lid on your frog tank.
All my cats are desexed, & they are less inclined to hunt if they have this operation.
The females are probably worse, as it natural that they hunt for their kittens, even if they don't have any.

myLot reputation of 99/100. texasclassygal (3438)   ranked 167 out of 7,715 in cats  3 years ago

Yes, all my cats are desexed and still love to hunt, I think it is their nature ... I only have males cats, I have found them to be more loving than the females.

myLot reputation of 99/100. wolfie34 (13861)   ranked 74 out of 7,715 in cats  3 years ago

Our females are always in, whereas the males treat the place like a hotel! None of the four cats will sit on our laps! The females are far more independent and are quite madams in their behaviour.

Oh my you've got a great mighty hunter on your hands....Funny how things turn out in general...my cats have always been indoor cats as well since I have lived in an apartment..So I never expected that I too had mighty hunters...years and years ago, we used to have mice as well...uh, yeah---the cats took care of that problem and I never figured they would catch the mice...actually thought my prima donnas would faint at seeing a mouse...wrong...LOL
Your Jackson Browne (avatar) does look rather fierce in that pic...LOL

Jackson Browne is so proud this evening of his conquest, I can't help but remind him what a proud hunter he is. Have a good one, my dear friend!

They're trying to help you out and make you proud. They're teaching those little mice not to come across the boundart lines, or pretty soon they'll clear them out. I hate seeing the mice killed, but I'm like you. They're ok outside, but not in my house. lol

I am a neat freak and to see these dirty creatures in my house sends cringes up my spine, I am very blessed to have him as a family member, thanks for responding, it is truly appreciated.

My cats are indoor outdoor cats, and stay pretty well at home. There are lots of things to look at, water to drink, shade trees to enjoy, and they run in and eat, and then back out. I do not get mice in my house. I get mouse remains on the drive way. This is a natural thing for cats, but I have had some who were not predatory. I think all three of my current ones are, though. I have had a variety of things brought to me over the years, but never a snake or lizard. As a child my husband had a cat that proudly caught and killed snakes and brought them to his mother, who screamed and dropped whatever she was carrying.

In some cats, even 100% household cats, those genetic habits never really completely go. I bet he wanted to show you his "kill".
One of my cats, aged 7 years, is a great hunter, always has been. She is an inside cat at night, although is allowed out during the day.
Right from when she was a littkle kitten she would bring her kills inside. First it was a Christmas Beetle, then a moth, then a huntsman spider, which freaked me out.
She quickly graduated to stealng birds eggs fromn nests, then killing mice & birds. The latter we tried very hard to stop as sopme birds are native.
She would always bring her kill in through the cat flap, which included birds that she would pluck in my daughters bedroom.
Now there is no cat flap, & she goes out the front.
She catches mice, rats & birds, & if we don't let her briong them inside, she hides them under the trailor.

Now, any rodent that will come into a house with 20 cats has got to be low in the IQ range of their race. Having said that, I've found 3 rats & the new roomie found a mouse in the house. Dead, needless to say.
We don't know who exactly killed them, I do know a few who did not, because they were locked in the bedroom when the rodents died. Of course, one of them was going to be sure & get some fun in with the body before I could get it away from him!

Good for Jackson Browne. Hopefully he will get rid of them for you by either killing them or chasing them out of the house for you. If the mice were smart, they would just pack up their things and leave.

That is funny. Years ago my next door neighbor had a siamese who loved to visit me. For some reason he loved to come into my house and play. I had to have second thoughts though when he came across the yard and into the house to show me his catch. He dropped a mouse at my feet. Was that a present?

It is the nature of the beast. We kept our 2 cats inside for almost all of their first year. Now they go out and they really enjoy it. They have not brought anything home yet but it is summer. In the fall the mice like to come inside to stay warm. Last year we had no mice try to come inside.
