Do you own a microwave oven? What do you cook most in it? |
|
I think I would be lost without my microwave oven. My old one took 3 minutes to heat the water for a cup of tea so my son bought me a new one for my birthday and it's fantastic! I couldn't be happier with it! The old one was much to big for me since I live alone. The new one is perfect for me. I basically heat up water for tea or just reheat my coffee in the morning. Sometimes I buy microwaveable meals for myself and I love the pancakes and french toast stix that the stores sell. I've never cooked meat in one though and don't think I ever will. I think their great for defrosting things too. What do you like to make in your microwave? Do you have special foods or meals that you use it for? Would you miss your microwave oven if you didn't have one?

1. lilaclady (19767) | 3 years ago | I have a microwave but I dont really use it all that much, just for thawing out or heating up a weight watchers type dinner, I still have some doubts on the health issues of microwaves to be using them a lot.

ctrymuziklvr (4677) | 3 years ago | A lot of people feel the same way you do. The way I see it is that I use it so seldom and never to actually cook food I'm safe. I found this information on wikipedia for you in case your interested:
Controversial hazards Radiation Some people are concerned with being exposed to the microwave radiation. According to the United States Food and Drug Adminstration's Center for Devices and Radiological Health, a U.S. Federal standard limits microwave leakage from an oven, for the lifetime of the device, to 5 milliwatts per square centimeter when measured 2 inches from the surface of the oven.[4] This is far below the exposure level that is currently considered to be harmful to human health. As a comparison, a GSM mobile phone may emit up to 1 W[5] at 1800 MHz, which is 3.2 mW/cm², at 5 cm[6] with a human being staying nearby (such as within 5 cm) for far longer periods of time. Whether or not cellular phones are hazardous to one's health is controversial (see mobile phone radiation and health).
The radiation produced by a microwave oven is non-ionizing. As such, it does not have the specific cancer risks associated with ionizing radiation such as X-rays, ultraviolet light, and high-energy particles. Any health problems would result from electric currents induced in the body, most prominently cataract formation. Long-term rodent studies to assess cancer risk have so far failed to clearly identify any carcinogenicity from 2450 MHz microwave radiation at chronic (large fraction of life span) exposure levels, far larger than humans are likely to encounter even from leaking ovens.[7][8]

2. Heavensent53 (2615) | 3 years ago | Hi, I don't cook meat either although microwave hamburgers are good for something different... haven't done that for a while. I honestly don't think I could live without my microwave oven. We reheat coffee and other foods, I use the defrost all the time, my husband used to make popcorn, (now he uses the hot air popper- healthier than bags) I cook canned veggies in it, not to mention baked potatoes! I'm glad you got a new one, that is so nice... I think I'm going to put out hints to my Son tommorrow... countrymusiclover on myLot Son got her a new microwave!:)

4. worldwise1 (6114) | 3 years ago | The only thing I really cook in my microwave, ctry, is stuff like pasta dishes. I don't think I would ever cook meat in one either. Basically, I use mine for the same purpose as you-tea and coffee, and the occasional microwave dinner. I would probably miss the convenience of having mine, but I've never really trusted them because I have heard a lot of negative things about them. I think mine has gotten too old, so I'll either throw it out or buy a new one.

ctrymuziklvr (4677) | 3 years ago | My previous one was definitely old. It took 3 min. to heat up a cup of tea! It didn't even have the LED read out. Very old huh?

5. youless (15356) | 3 years ago | Usually we just use it for heat the foods. And my mom can use it to make a roasted chicken and it really tastes nice. I use my oven to make pizza and cake. And basically I use the microwave oven to make the potatoes and so on.

6. writersedge (4485) | 3 years ago | We reheat leftovers or if I make a meal and my husband comes home later, he reheats it. We do the coffee-tea thing, too.
But I like to scramble 2 eggs with milk. Put in for one min. Put the cooked outside part in the middle. Heat for one min. again. If ready, pepper it and/or put between bread. If not ready, push cooked part to inside again and try 30 seconds.
It's good for low-fat cooking, you can sauté onions and mushrooms with less butter or olive oil, but I have to "finish off" in a frying pan to get crispy or a better consistancy.
I, too, worry about the health issues. I try to cook and be in another room when it's on. Not sure if that's a big help, but maybe it's the thought that counts.

7. beauty_ph (850) | 3 years ago | We do not have a microwave oven at home. But in our office we have 2 microwave ovens. Most of the time we cook food like noodles or reheat other foods like pizza and cook popcorns too. We really enjoy having a microwave in our office where we can reheat food and enjoy the hot meal served. God bless!

8. CEN7777 (588) | 3 years ago | I use micro wave oven mostly for reheating the ready food before heating. it is only micro wave that heats faster and within a minute u can reheat meals and vegetable that can be served for eating immediatly. we can prepare tea or coffee also. one of the best item that can be prepared in micro wave is popcorn.even potatos can cut in chip forms, and can be roast in microwave by putting some butter on it. I believe microwave is the best partner in kitchen for reheating .

9. lexus54 (2665) | 3 years ago | I have a microwave oven in my home for six years now, but I seldom use it. For our cooking, we do stirfry very often, so we use the wok instead of doing baking in the oven. Once a while, we will use this to heat up food, or we use the conventional setting to bake some cakes or pies. So I would say my microwave oven is kinda underutilised. But it is still useful to have around when I need one.
