Date Night |
|
Last spring, my boyfriend and I deemed Friday night as date night. Once the drive-in movie theaters opened for the season, we decided we would go every Friday. The routine consisted of ordering a pizza and picking it up, packing a cooler full of whatever we wanted, and driving the 25, 45, or 60 minutes to whichever drive-in had the best movies to offer. With three choices for theaters, we were able to go every Friday without fail. We had an awesome time, and once the season was over, I reminded myself every Friday night during the fall and winter that eventually spring would arrive, the drive-ins would open, and date night would resume.
Winter finally passed, and spring arrived. I received my first email from one of the three drive-ins announcing the opening weekend's movies. The selection was awful. Now, keep in mind that we will sit through a really bad movie just to see the second, much better movie. Perfect example: Last summer, we sat through Garfield part 2 so we could see the new Superman movie. I called the other two theaters and they were showing the exact same movies. So, opening weekend was out. I checked the following weekend, and they all carried the same movies over from the previous week. So, another Friday went by with no trip to the drive in. The string of awful movies continued. In June, we were able to go to a drive in while we were out of town. We saw Evan Almighty (pretty bad) and Knocked Up (funnier than we expected). It was a lot of fun - just as fun as I remembered - but it wasn't one of our local haunts, and I was still really looking forward to going locally.
FINALLY, this past Friday, the closest theater to us (the one 25 minutes away) announced their weekend lineup. It consisted of three movies: The Simpsons, the latest Die Hard installment, and Fantastic Four, part 2 (three movies for only $7 per person!). There was no question we were going to go. We ordered our pizza, packed our cooler, picked up additional snacks, and headed out. We arrived plenty early. We got an excellent spot smack in the center of the first row where SUVs are allowed. Eventually, 9:00 rolled around, and we heard the first preview being broadcast over the radio. That was the problem though - we only HEARD it. We didn't see it. Shortly thereafter, we were returned to music. Around 9:20, we heard the preview again. Still no video. Returned to music again. About 9:30, one of the young employees came over the loudspeaker and quietly announced that they were attempting to change the bulb. "Hmmmmm (hey, that's my name!)," we thought. "It's been 30 minutes. It's bound to be more than just a bulb causing this problem..." Around 9:52, the music stopped and a more senior voice explained the problem with the projector, and told us all to exit the rear of the parking lot to receive our full refund.
So, there it was. We had been looking forward to this night since last October. We finally made it. And then - NOTHING. We stood in the single-threaded exit line for about 35 minutes, stopped for a 12-pack, and got home around 11:00.
I know it sounds silly to be so disappointed by something so trivial in the grand scheme of things. There are other events that could transpire that could be so much worse. But we had been looking forward to this fun evening for (roughly) 9 months.
So, here are my questions for you: Have you been to the drive in yet this summer? What did you see? Did you enjoy yourself? Have you had something silly you have been looking forward to for months, only to have your exciting evening ruined by something beyond your control? What happened? Tell me your story.

1. vicki2876 (3241) | 3 years ago | I haven't been to a drive in movie theatre since I was 7. There are none around here at all and the other movie theatre is one hour away. Even though I understand that you are frustrated that your date nights are getting ruined by the drive in problems I think it is really cool you have date night. We seldom ever get out together as a couple. Usually it is a family affair. Good luck to see a good movie in a drive in!

2. drannhh (7225) | 3 years ago | We have a few funky little routines, too, and feel a bit like fish out of water when the places we enjoyed together slowly fold, one by one over time. All of the outdoor theaters anywhere near where we live closed down years ago...many years ago.
However, there was a little grocery store where we shopped for more than 10 years. It was kind of junky and you bagged the groceries yourself, but they had amazing items that aren't carried in some of the regular markets...things like fresh hibiscus juice or Purslane. This store shut down 3 or 4 months ago, yet every few days one or the other of us thinks of something else we would add to the shopping list, but now cannot because nobody sells that item around here any more.

Hmmmmm (1687) | 3 years ago | We have had places like that too. There was a health food store that was the only place to sell this all natural tangerine sparkling water drink I loved. They closed. As it turned out, the health department shut them down - something about rats. I guess I was better off anyway.
There was a new Mexican restaurant we had been wanting to try that's actually on the way out to the drive in we went to on Friday. As we drove by, although it was still green, the signs were all gone, the neon was missing from the window, and it looked just like the empty, abandoned Ponderosa it was for years before it was the Mexican restaurant.
p.s. - You made me look up purslane.

drannhh (7225) | 3 years ago | Well, you know one of my favorite hobbies is making people look up words, lol, and the next favorite, of course, is looking them up myself.
A wild variety of purslane grows in the cracks of just about every sidewalk, but you can't eat that because of all the dirt and bug spray. The good news for those of us who like this traditional English pot herb from days gone by is that domesticated purslane is making a comeback because it is high in Omega 3. Hah! We always knew it was healthy, we just didn't know why.
But our now-deceased junky little store sold it seasonally in 50 cent bunches labeled "veragos" which was a misspelling for "verdolagas" which is Spanish for PURSLANE, but the literal translation is, of course, "green lake." Speaking of Mexican markets, they do sometimes sell purslane, too, as it makes the pinto beans taste really good.

It probably has but I have repressed all bad memoies so it is like they never even happened. LOL I hope the next movie outing goes better.

Hmmmmm (1687) | 3 years ago | Yeah. Big bummer. I figure it only happened because I told you all about it. Had I kept my mouth shut, I would have no story to tell.
I am anxiously awaiting the updates for next Friday, which just happens to be my birthday.:)

4. Trace86 (3406) | 3 years ago | I can't remember the last time I went to a drive-in movie. I don't even know where one is. My disappointing evening was several years ago when my stepson was still a minor. It was our anniversary and the boy was going to sleep over at a friend's house. We put on a movie and opened a bottle of wine. We got halfway through both when we got a call from the police station saying they had the kid and we needed to come get him. We should have told the officer that we couldn't because we had been drinking, but like idiots we went and got him and paid money to bail his sorry butt out. The worst anniversary of my life.

Hmmmmm (1687) | 3 years ago | Well, that sounds pretty darn awful. I can only imagine the kind of emotional roller coaster you experienced that day.

5. coolseeds (2522) | 3 years ago | I go to the drive in as well. So I have had the same experience as far as movie selection as you. We chose to pass on Evan Almighty and Knocked Up.
We did get to see The Simpsons and Die Hard 27. They both were pretty good and definitely worth the 6 bux.
I wish they would show 3 movies or dusk to dawn.
| |
| |
|
|
coolseeds (2522) | 3 years ago | I think you don't have to worry because the Simpsons and Die Hard will probably still be playing. They were both pretty good.
| |
|
|
Hmmmmm (1687) | 3 years ago | I love the idea of dusk 'til dawn. They had that here for Halloween weekend last year. We talked about going, but then decided we were too old to stay up all night. One of the three theaters I listed always has three movies. It's the cleanest of the three as well.
I'll be watching for this next weekend's lineup. One of the three theaters seems to be lazy when it comes to updating their website (The "What's playing this week" link takes you to information from two weeks ago). The one closest to us (the one with the technical difficulties) doesn't have a website and doesn't update their phone message until Thursday. The third has Ratatouille, Underdog, and Harry Potter (we'll be skipping that).

6. Modestah (7932) | 3 years ago | our semi local drive-in (the only one in the county as far as I know) opened this past weekend too, with fantastic four and die hard. I tried to be very encouraging to inspire the family to go, but no luck...no one interested but me.
I would have been really bummed in your situation too! I should think that they would have offered more than a refund but a free pass or two as well (for all the time wasted) too bad they did not do a test run of the works the night before opening, just to make sure all was in working order.
I remember once a long while ago where the drive in had cars backed up down the road for several miles - I think it was the opening night of Jurasic Park.
| |
| |
|
|
Hmmmmm (1687) | 3 years ago | I didn't really expect anything more than a refund. However, it seemed to me that a business like this should have a hot swap machine ready to go, and they obviously didn't. I don't know how much a projector costs, but when something like this happens on a weekend, it seems like a financial loss that's large enough to warrant having a hot spare.

7. kelly60 (3270) | 3 years ago | I would have been very disappointed too, not only because I had been looking forward to if for so long, but because I had wasted so much time that evening waiting for something that was eventually a big let down. I rarely go to the drive in. I usually wait for movies to come out on video. It is easier and less expensive for our entire family to sit down at home and watch them together.
The biggest disappointment for me was when my two youngest sons spent a couple of days with my daughter and her boyfriend last summer. They were supposed to meet me at our family reunion. They didn't call me ahead, or show up at the reunion. He called a little over an hour after the reunion started and told me that they weren't going to make it. It might have been different if there were a good reason, but there wasn't.
| |
| |
|
|
kelly60 (3270) | 3 years ago | By the way, it would have been a pretty big insult to me to get no more than just a full refund of my ticket price. After looking at the link that you provided in a previous comment, it looks like out of the eleven drive ins in my state, the nearest one to me is well over a hundred miles away from home!
| |
|
|
Hmmmmm (1687) | 3 years ago | It's disappointing when people just opt out rather than recognizing that there is a family responsibility, isn't it?
Where we live, we have to drive a ways to get to just about anything. We have a grocery store in town that disgusts me (dust on most of the canned goods, expired products on the shelves, inventory varies - they can go months without carrying grapefruit juice), so we drive 20 minutes to get to a grocery store we really like. The 25 minute drive to the drive-in isn't any different.
| |
|
|
kelly60 (3270) | 3 years ago | It sounds like your grocery stores are worse than ours are. I don't like ours mostly because of the prices and often the quality of the fresh meats and vegetables. We usually make a 45 minute drive to get to the stores where I like to do my shopping. I pick up what I need to get locally in between trips, but at least once or twice each month we make the long drive out of town to do our regular grocery shopping.
| |
|
|
Hmmmmm (1687) | 3 years ago | I didn't even mention price and quality, but I probably should have. For example, usually I get to choose between three avocados (when they have them), and they are all overripe and $2 each. The quality of the fresh meat is the ONLY reason we go there (and even then, it isn't too often) because my boyfriend loves his steak. Our Sam's and BJ's are 35-40 minutes away. We go once a month, and then hit the good grocery store on the way home. Other than that, we will even go to the Mobil On The Run to pick up the in-between-trips stuff just to avoid going to the dusty store.
I am glad someone else feels my local grocery store pain!

8. GnosticGoddess (3490) | 3 years ago | Oh man that sucks!!! I am so sorry you night was ruined like that! When these little things like this happen in life it's sometimes as disappointing as bigger things. Because they're so full of enjoyment and you look forward to them. I really love the idea of Friday night as date night - especially with your setup. That sounds like the perfect thing my hubby and I would enjoy doing.
So Evan Almighty sucked? Well that sucks LOL...It looked pretty decent...trailers can be deceiving.
I wish you luck for the Friday coming up:)
| |
| |
|
|
Hmmmmm (1687) | 3 years ago | I agree that the trailer for Evan Almighty made it look like it could have been promising. It wasn't. Without ruining any of the plot, I will say that anyone could have played any of the roles in that movie. They didn't take advantage of Steve Carell's talent. Lauren Graham (who plays Evan's wife) was mediocre at best, and I really liked her in Gilmore Girls. I think Wanda Sykes, although funny when she does her stand up routine, is a horrible actress.
Did you check the drive in link I provided to see if there is one close to you? If we are going on a road trip or out of town, I always check that link to see if there is one near where we are going to be. I hope you get to go!
| |
|
|
GnosticGoddess (3490) | 3 years ago | Yeah it says there is but I haven't had the money to go so I haven't called them yet.
I too love Lauren Graham...I can't believe it was that bad. Well that just sucks! I was all syked cause she was in it!
| |
|
|
Hmmmmm (1687) | 3 years ago | Don't let me ruin it for you! Please see it and judge for yourself (only wait to rent it instead of paying the full ticket price!).
| |
|
|
GnosticGoddess (3490) | 3 years ago | LOL - we still will rent it. My hubby loves Steve Carrell...so he'd still want to watch it. I just won't expect too much:) Maybe I will enjoy it more this way LOL.

10. twilight021 (1621) | 3 years ago | What a bummer! I would be dissapointed too! It's funny you should bring this up. I went to my first Drive in movie...EVER this summer. Thre aren't many drive in's left in my state, but I was up in NH one weekend at my dad's place and we founf our there was a drive in about a hour away. Since I had never been we decided to check it out. Like you, my boyfriend and I stopped and got snacks and then headed out. We saw Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix. It was pretty good. Evan Almighty was the second show, but I was too tired, with an hours drive left so we only stayed for one movie. It was pretty fun, even if there were a lot of people hanging outside their cars smoking;-)

|
Hmmmmm (1687) | 3 years ago | I am so glad you got to experience the drive in! Did they broadcast the movie over the radio, or did you have to use the clunky speakers? All of the ones around us use either just the radio, or both. I am so glad none of them use ONLY the speakers. I could never get the volume up high enough, and I found it annoying.
